In these photos I show the maximum background blur achieaveable with the most common camera/lens combinations. They are shot with the same camera and lens, I closed the diaphgram aperture to simulate the blur. More blur in a portrait means less distractions from the subject and and a more pleasing photo. You’ll find the numbers later if you are interested.
What gives more backgorund blur?
* A larger sensor on the camera;
* A longer focal lenght (more “zoom in”);
* A smaller f/ number (higher aperture).
Starting on top left, we have a full frame DSRL with a professional f/2.8 lens zoomed in at maxium aperture, which gives us the maximum amount of blur in the backround. On bottom left I simulate how the photo would look with the same lens and settings on a cheap DSRL with crop sensor. On bottom right I simulate the same cheap crop sensor DSRL but with a dark and cheap f/5.6 kit lens. On top right we have a simulated compact camera with “good” zoom capabilities, that gives the least amount of blur; compact cameras that don’t have a long zoom will give even less blur. The actual pictures took with the simulated cameras and cheap lenses may look worse.
Camera settings (aperture and shutter speed):
Top left: f/2.8 - 1/40
Bottom left: f/4.0 - 1/20
Bottom right: f/8.0 - 1/5
Top right: f/32- 3.2 sec

A fast macro lens opens up an entirely new dimension to photography! I took the photo of the tree from just a few inches away from it, and at f/2, it completely obliterated the background into a smooth bokeh of colors. See the same scene below with the focus changed to what was in the background.
Depending on the aperture I use (e.g., f/4 or 5.6), I can control the level of defocus of the background, while staying close to my subject. Something only a macro lens can do.
This exercise convinced me to not only keep the Zeiss 100mm Makro Planar lens, but also get the 50mm version of it. This lens is going to be my normal lens for my Nikon for all situations except when I must have autofocus.
I highly recommend either of these lenses to anyone with any DSLR.

Did an experiment with 300mm 2.8 with and 2x extender (600mm 5.6) Wanted to really blow out and compress the background. It was way to windy and sunny, but worked out in the end.
yeah i know the background is too small, just come to my twitter, & look at my twitpic all the fullsizes are in there. twitter.com/xDreamForever

Some watercolour sketches for a backcloth design for Llangollen Operatics production of 'Carousel'. A lot of the musical takes place against a sea side back drop which will be painted on a back cloth 7 meters by 4 meters. These are the design ideas for that backdrop.

I repeatedly (and somewhat randomly, as I refuse to buy a stamp positioner) stamped the birdhouse from the new LP121 Bird Greetings set onto a piece of green decorated paper to create the background. I used the branch from the same set for the edges of the smaller image panel as well as the bird (colored with watercolor crayon) and saying stamps. I tore the bottom edge of all but the background panel. A simple button and seed bead finish it off.
