In the last few years, as more bonsai enthusiasts photograph their trees, there has been discussion of what color background to use to best show the trees to their best advantage: black or white.
To add to the discussion, I took the photo of my chojubai white (see previous post) and changed the background from white to black.
I think the black background produces an overall more “contrasty” image. The flowers, in particular, here lose some of their midtones and thus, some of their range of color. This is true even of white flowers which admittedly begin at one end of the “contrasty” range.
Whichever background you use in your pictures, remember that sometimes full color ranges won’t serve you as well as one high in contrast.

How do I get this onto my iPhone?
There are a number of ways to do this, however I think the easiest and fastest way is to download Flickr’s free app. Within the Flickr app you surf over to my photo feed to view the images (if you make me a contact then I’ll appear in the flickr contact list). When you find one you like, just click the download button and save the image directly to your phone. Quick & Simple!
I don’t have an iPhone. Can I still use it on my phone?
As of this writing this image (960 x 640) should be large enough to be used as wallpaper with the Droid / Android, BlackBerry, Windows 7, and iPhone.
How did you make it?
This background was made using graphic design software such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Filter Forge, Genetica, Wacom, Alien Skin, Topaz Labs, as well as several other programs.

Camera: Canon 5D Mark III (full frame sensor)
Lens: Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS II at 200mm
In these photos I show the maximum background blur achieaveable with the most common camera/lens combinations. They are shot with the same camera and lens, I closed the diaphgram aperture to simulate the blur. More blur in a portrait means less distractions from the subject and and a more pleasing photo. You’ll find the numbers later if you are interested.
What gives more backgorund blur?
* A larger sensor on the camera;
* A longer focal lenght (more “zoom in”);
* A smaller f/ number (higher aperture).
Starting on top left, we have a full frame DSRL with a professional f/2.8 lens zoomed in at maxium aperture, which gives us the maximum amount of blur in the backround. On bottom left I simulate how the photo would look with the same lens and settings on a cheap DSRL with crop sensor. On bottom right I simulate the same cheap crop sensor DSRL but with a dark and cheap f/5.6 kit lens. On top right we have a simulated compact camera with “good” zoom capabilities, that gives the least amount of blur; compact cameras that don’t have a long zoom will give even less blur. The actual pictures took with the simulated cameras and cheap lenses may look worse.
Camera settings (aperture and shutter speed):
Top left: f/2.8 - 1/40
Bottom left: f/4.0 - 1/20
Bottom right: f/8.0 - 1/5
Top right: f/32- 3.2 sec
