Raja # or King Pigeon Pose is an asana. Sanskrit: राजकपोतासन; Raja – king, Kapot – pigeon, Asana – pose; Pronounced As – rah-JAH-cop-poh-TAHS-anna.
The Pigeon Pose is practiced in a seated position. It is a backbend pose that makes the chest puff up, thereby resembling the stance of a pigeon. This is how this asana is named Raja (king) kapot (pigeon) asana (pose). This asana is an advanced yoga pose.
Health benefits Pigeon Pose (Eka Pada Rajakapotasana):
– Opens the hip joint
– Lengthens the hip flexor
– Stretches the thighs, gluteals and piriformis muscles
– Extends the groin and psoas
– Helps with a urinary disorder
– Stimulates the internal organs
– Increases hip flexibility
– Improves posture, alignment, and overall suppleness
– Diminishes lower back pain and stiffness
– It is a primal reaction to store stress, trauma, fear, and anxiety in the hips. These bottled up feelings create tight hips.
