Cobra Pose or Bhujangasana

Chakrasana, also known as the Wheel Pose, is a backbending yoga asana that strengthens the spine, arms, and legs, and stretches the chest, neck, and front body. It is typically performed lying on your back with your knees bent and your feet flat on the ground. You then place your hands on the ground next to your ears and press into them as you lift your torso and legs off the ground, creating an arc or wheel shape with your body. This pose is both invigorating and challenging, and is often used to energize the body and boost the immune system. It is important to practice Chakrasana under the guidance of a qualified yoga instructor, especially if you have any prior injuries or medical conditions.

Pronunciation: (EHK-a PHOD-a RHA-ja KAH-pot AHS-uhna)

Translation: "Eka" means one in Sanskrit. "Pada" means foot or leg. "Raja" means a king. "Kapota" means a pigeon or dove. Asana means yoga pose or posture.

Eka Pada Rajakapotasana (One-Legged King Pigeon Pose) takes us on a journey into deep backbends. Moving into the preparation of this pose the simple pigeon deeply works the hips and helps to release tension in this vital region of our bodies. It requires steady balance while curving backward. The pose is named after kapota which is a dove or pigeon with its chest puffed up. The backbend action of the torso also works the shoulders into an open position, helping to open the lungs

As we watch them grow, the resemblances come into view like a photograph developing.

With equal parts enthusiasm and trepidation, I watched Grace teach herself how to do a backbend this week. She gradually worked up to it, first doing a backbend on to a chair, and then eventually building enough courage to bend the whole way to the floor. I remember so vividly as a girl, practicing walk-overs and backbends in the yard. . . . the thrill of being able to move my body in unexpected ways, the joy of trusting my own skill. It is an amazing experience to be able to witness those same feelings arise in her, and the sense of pride she has in having gone through this childhood rite of passage.
