I always tell noob lady models to bring a nice dress to start out with. See, if you are working with somebody who's got a laundry list of experience, they flip *on* and are ready to go. But even people who are used to other kinds of performing can have issues with photo posing.

So, they'll show up all tight and anxious and stuff. And the last thing they need is some weird-looking guy with a camera telling them to get out the undies and start posing all tarty. They'll look and decide they've got nasty thunder-thighs or wrinkles or something and get even more uncomfortable. And lightpainting or other more intricate work is very slow moving. So having the model pose in a dress is a good place to start. It's not boring street clothes, but it's not a lacy nearly-nothing either.

Also, the model needs to get used to how I work.

So, yes, this was from the first part of the shoot, where we were just getting going.

yeah kenzie you work that backbend!

Opening that heart, upside down or right side up (:

adults should not try this

Time for a little yoga! I go to kundalini yoga classes about four times a week at the YMCA, and got the idea for this setup during last night's class.

I put the camera on a fully extended tripod on top of the dining room table, making the camera somewhere around nine feet off the floor. If I had to climb up on top of the table after every shot to see the result, I wouldn't know how to tweak my position, so I took the time to set up tethered shooting through my laptop (on a chair on top of the table, since my cable was short).

I tried a few different poses (camel, pigeon, shoulder stand, lunge, twists), and in the end was happiest with this simple standing backbend, often seen as part of sun salutations. For light I used one flash bounced into an umbrella high front right, and a second flash on the floor back right with a diffusion dome, pointing a little at me but mostly at the white ceiling for overall fill. The flashes were triggered with Pocket Wizards and the camera with an ebay wireless remote.
