Olmac "Axe"

Mexico: Olmec, 10th-5th century BC

The massive but stubby Olmec works that are variously called votive axes, or hachas, feature large-headed anthropomorphic figures with tapered and simplified lower bodies. A celt, a functional cutting tool of the era, is held tightly to the figure's chest. The top half of the votive axe is taken up with the snarling-mouthed head, its substantial breadth topped by a cleft in the middle of the forehead. The cleft is a much-used Olmec symbol associated with the growing of the maize (corn) plant and is a reference to agricultural plenty. Maize was literally and figuratively the staff of life in ancient Mexico. This votive axe is smaller, and its facial features are more symbolically stylized than earlier examples. Mouth, eyes, eyebrows, and forehead here either have meaningful shape or are marked with specific signs-all shapes and signs associated with Olmec supernaturals. The mouth is a particular focus of attention. It is fierce, a ferociousness associates with the felines, such as the native jaguar.
