L'Axe majeur est une œuvre monumentale située à Cergy, dans le département du Val-d'Oise, en France. L’œuvre s'inscrit dans une boucle de l'Oise, au centre de la ville nouvelle de Cergy-Pontoise. Achteckige Bauten haben vier Symmetrieachsen, sie sind also zweifach achsensymmetrisch. Die Acht steht im Christentum für die Auferstehung Jesu Christi und die Teilhabe an Christus in der Taufe. Daher findet sich die oktogonale Form oft bei Baptisterien und Taufbecken. Allgemein steht die Acht in der christlichen Symbolik für Neubeginn und Wiedergeburt.
From February 19 to April 19, the light artist Ludger Hinse will transform the rooms of the Marktkirche and the Kreuzkirche in Hanover with his installations. His light objects are a constantly changing play of light and colour, of shadow and light lines.
Octagonal buildings have four axes of symmetry, so they are doubly axisymmetric. In Christianity, the eight stands for the resurrection of Jesus Christ and participation in Christ in baptism. Therefore, the octagonal shape is often found in baptisteries and fonts. In general, the eight in Christian symbolism stands for new beginnings and rebirth.
