L'Axe majeur est une œuvre monumentale située à Cergy, dans le département du Val-d'Oise, en France. L’œuvre s'inscrit dans une boucle de l'Oise, au centre de la ville nouvelle de Cergy-Pontoise. Elle est conçue par le sculpteur israélien Dani Karavan à partir de 1980. L'Axe est composé de douze stations sur une longueur de 3,2 kilomètres, incluant une tour penchée, un ensemble de douze colonnes, une passerelle, une île ou encore un rayon laser qui survole le parcours. Il débute dans le quartier auquel il a donné son nom, Axe Majeur - Horloge (anciennement Saint-Christophe) et s'achève à la limite avec Neuville-sur-Oise, après avoir survolé les étangs artificiels de Cergy-Neuville. Symbole de la ville nouvelle, il est également l'une des œuvres importantes de Dani Karavan, qui accompagne sa construction pendant plus de trente ans.
The “Axe Majeur” is a monumental artwork located in Cergy, in the Val-d'Oise department, France. The work is located in a loop of the Oise River, in the new town Cergy-Pontoise. It was designed by the Israeli sculptor Dani Karavan from 1980. The Axis is composed of twelve stations over a length of 3.2 kilometers, including a leaning tower, a set of twelve columns, a footbridge, an island or a laser beam that flies over the course. It begins in the area to which it gave its name, Axe Majeur - Clock (formerly Saint-Christophe) and ends at the limit with Neuville-sur-Oise, after flying over the artificial ponds of Cergy-Neuville. Symbol of the new city, it is also one of the important works of Dani Karavan, who accompanies its construction for more than thirty years.

Small Axe is by Bob Marley and is one of my reggae favourites. This was another uplifting view from the top of Boredale pass on the bridleway to Patterdale. It's been fairly wet and dismal since so I was very lucky to get such great views.

This is from a German encampment. As I was working on the picture, it occurred to me that this might be some obscure nazi symbolism. After all, it's THREE axes. I can see one axe in the tree. But THREE? So I showed the picture to Grok and asked about nazi symbolism. Grok gave me a nice discussion about axes as symbols, but it's pretty much cross-culture, and there isn't any unsavory tie-in.
Grok also said it was a nice picture. So I got that going for me, which is nice. 😜
Now, I'm off to watch NASCAR.

I spent the whole day photographing an Osprey at Seaton on the River Axe, Devon and was rewarded when this juvenile bird hovered a few feet away while flying into a stiff southerly breeze, blowing straight up the river.
It is a juvenile bird and is still learning how to fish. Having caught a small fish around 9am it wasn't successful again to 5pm but it sure did put in numerous attempts throughout the day.
This was a amazing opportunity to photograph a wild Osprey in its natural environment. Such a pleasure to see, enjoy and in no way set up.

Tucked away off the path on the way up Glaramara lies the remamnants of a stone axe factory .. probably looking very much like it did on the day the last man in furs left the site. The stone scalpings are still lying there and the rock where they must have sat is reasonably comfortable. Everyone is more familiar with the one of Pike o Stickle, but unbeknown to most there are many scattered around the Scafells and outlying ridges where outcropping of hornblende arises.
This is the site of what might be called the first recognisable 'industry' in the British Isles. The scree slopes here were quarried some 5,000 years ago for the raw materials for stone axes, which were then shaped and eventually ended up distributed round the country.
The first settlers in the Lake District came to the area by sea. They moved inland along the rivers, and along the way discovered the area we call Langdale and its greenstone volcanic tuff. They made polished axe heads with it. From here, the axe heads were exported, presumably through trading. There is a track leading east along the ridge from the site that may well date from the 'factory' period.
A study of stone axe heads from all over England and Wales came up with the surprising discovery that 27% were made of Great Langdale tuff and therefore originated from this site. Most such axe heads were found in Lincolnshire and the East Midlands area but many were found much further afield — in Northern Ireland and even Poland.
A number of the axe heads from Langdale were found in wet places — marshes, streams, etc. and showed no sign of having been used. This may indicate that they had been placed in significant spots as some kind of religious offering.
A word of warning: this site is high up and on unstable slopes of loose rock, making it a dangerous place. Not one for a family outing. And please note that it is against the law to remove anything from this site.
