A few years ago, in order to save the rest of my knee, I had to give up skiing. Skiing, I loved it so much, and then it was the first thing I had to let go. There, in the midst of moaning, I saw the powerful lesson:
To give up skiing because my knee was ruined was no problem at all, it was the only intelligent solution. To not give up my clinging to the sensations of skiing was a problem.
By clinging to something we like we refuse to accept one of the most fundamental laws of Nature: Things change, and these changes have a principal direction, they follow the merciless Second Law of Thermodynamics, which creates what physicists call Entropy. The universe is governed by processes that relentlessly transform physical things from order to lesser order, from pattern to amorphousness, from concentration to delusion, from higher to lower energy. Eggs break, paint peels, ice melts, skin wrinkles, and knees go kaput. It happens by itself and all the time, no matter what, it’s the law, no exceptions, like gravity, you can’t bargain with it, it’s always there.
There is nothing wrong with liking, it’s the clinging that ruins everything. By holding on, by resisting the inevitable change we set ourselves up for suffering.
And this damn clinging is just a conditioned response, a habit, an entirely impersonal phenomenon, something we unknowingly picked up by mistake. We are blueprinted to form habits, in many ways they make us survive, but they also make us suffer. The terrific thing is: we not only have the attribute of building habits, we also have the capacity of being aware of them. And this is the magical key for the solution. We ultimately do have the final say about the carrying out of our habits, we are free to disobey.
I not only learned to ski but also learned to let it go again. Like day and night, like life and death, these things belong together. When we hang on we suffer.
Good practice, indeed.

As I was spending my lunchtime wandering around trying to get up the courage to do some less-candid street photography, a girl with a clipboard stopped me. She introduced herself as Megan - she was raising awareness (and money) for the UK charity 'Breakthrough' which funds education and research into breast cancer.
At the end of our discussion I asked if I could take her portrait and put it on flickr. So here she is. My first street portrait with permission!

Alisha's Pink Pumpkin Painting Party was held at Bradford Research Center in Columbia on Oct. 18, 2014. Well over 100 pink pumpkins were sold to help raise funds for women who need mammographs and to raise awareness for breast cancer. Superintendent Tim Reinbott planted the half acre field of "Porcelein Doll" variety pumpkins as a donation to the organization. Visitors to the event were able to purchase a pumpkin and decorate it with inspirational quotes and other decorations.
Kim Becking of Columbia attaches a ribbon and a bow to the pumpkin she painted. Becking painted a "12" on the pumpkin celebrating her 12 years of cancer free. "This is such a great event to have," she said. "It raises awareness in a different way that is fun and great reason to get outside."

Austria and Space
Very few people are aware that almost a hundred years ago, some Austrians were the main contributors to the then "forthcoming/future" space flight? Some of these concepts have been realized in the meantime while others are still waiting to be. Over the last fifty years, Austria has developed into a reliable partner of various space organisations, including the Institute for Space Research in Graz, and provides both technical instruments and scientific know-how for many space missions. A lecture with Bruno P. Besser from the Space Research Institute Austrian Academy of Sciences.

The relationship between a coach and a player is really one of a kind, or so it has been proven for a lot of things. Right here, these kids did what they absolutely loved to: Play cricket! At the end of each session, they'd talk about different social problems and create a comfort zone around one another. They are taught about the harmful effects of drugs and alcohol, Sexually transmitted diseases and how one must be careful about these things.
They were even told of the importance of doing well in school. Most schools in better parts of the world have lessons to cater for different issues, not in the poorer parts of Guyana though, so there is a need to use every possible mean available...
