The evening sky silhouettes the Atom sculpture outside the Savannah River Site Museum. The museum chronicles the history and development of the Savannah River Plant (now SRS) from the time of the 1950s Cold War to the present. The important nuclear research done at the SRS not only helped the United States win the Cold War but also continues to ensure the safety and security of our country today.

I couldn't resist buying a couple of these when I noticed a small auction lot on eBay. New-Old-Stock condition. These were used on inexpensive French hubs during the 1960s and 1970s, - NOT the better quality Normandy "Competition" or later Maillard "700" or "Professional" hubs of that period. So these were likely the hollow axles of quick-release hubs found on many mid-range Schwinn and Raleigh bikes as well as most French bikes imported during the American Bike Boom of the 1970s.
