What we all know as amaryllis, with its tall stems and trumpet flowers at their very best right now, is in fact a hyppeastrum.
The name comes from the Greek hyppeus – knight – and astron – star – after the resemblance of the flower to the knight’s star, a medieval weapon also known as the morning star.
Hyppeastrum come from Central and South America and are members of the amaryllis family, which also includes snowdrops, snowflakes (leucojum) and daffodils from the northern hemisphere, and clivia and nerines from South Africa – as well as the one amaryllis that grows reliably well in gardens, the belladonna lily.
To have them flower at Christmas, you would need to have planted them in October.
Have a great day and thanx for your comments and visits, M, (*_*)

- The Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT) is an aperture synthesis interferometer north of the village of Westerbork, Midden-Drenthe, in the northeastern Netherlands. It consists of a linear array of 12 antennas with a diameter of 25 metres arranged on a 2.7 km East-West line.
In the entire area around the telescope the use of mobile telephones and other sources of radio interference (including automobiles) is prohibited. This is to minimize the undesirable effects of interfering signals.
The text on the sign reads:
"It is prohibited to use mobile phones within the interference free area of the Radio Telescope Westerbork.
Turn your mobile phone off."
