This proyect born as an answer to the quarantine, as an Asthmatic I'm really worried and forced to be inside home. I'm hiperactive too so been in this situation is a kind of confinement.

I always liked the idea of mix photography with diferents kind of visual arts. What I wanted was to get something tridimesional in a 2d image and sugest something microscopic or totally opossed like an abstract scape to the mental closure.

Bagpipes (noun) - I understand the inventor of the bagpipes was inspired when he saw a man carrying an indignant, asthmatic pig under his arm. Unfortunately, the man-made object never equalled the purity of sound achieved by the pig. - Alfred Hitchcock

Young roots can be eaten like a vegetable (with a peppery flavor), or the shoots can be eaten as a salad. The whole plant was used to prepare an infusion with astringent and sedative properties. It was considered to be effective in healing asthmatic coughs, gastro-intestinal disorders, whooping cough and as a sedative pain-killer. Poultices containing O. biennis were at one time used to ease bruises and speed wound healing. One of the common names for Oenothera, "Kings cureall", reflects the wide range of healing powers ascribed to this plant, although it should be noted that its efficacy for these purposes has not been demonstrated in clinical trials.

THE NATIONAL ADVOCACY AND TRAINING PROGRAMME ON HIV, TB, SRH AND HUMAN RIGHTS

When I was engaged by KELIN as a CHA, I felt happy but also anxious about what the work would involve. Things changed immediately for me after being trained on the bill of rights according to chapter four of the Kenyan Constitution.

Specifically, Article 43 talks about the right to the attainment of the highest standards of health for all Kenyans. From the second day of the training, I began to notice how the rights of people were being violated and I decided not to keep quiet but to be the advocate that I was trained to be.

This work has been quite an experience for me. In fact, I have made friends and enemies during the short time that I have been involved with the work of a CHA. The friends that I have made include children in the community whom I have enlightened about their rights and adolescents who are struggling to adhere to their antiretroviral (ARV) medication. I have been linking them to places where they can access youth-friendly HIV care and treatment health services such as the Lea Toto programme.

I have reached out to various members of the community whom I have sensitised about their rights especially health rights, types of sexual offences and treatment literacy for those who are on ARVs and TB drugs.

Many times, I have networked with other organisations to link up members of the community to the places where they can get support. When handling cases of gender-based violence, I have linked up the women to the Women’s Rights Awareness Programme (WRAP Kenya) where they get more support. Many times, I have referred people to Amani Counselling Centre for psychosocial support, especially in cases of rape and defilement while KELIN handles the legal issues. I have also referred to several people to health care facilities to test and know their HIV status.

This work has also had a fair share of hostility from some community leaders. This is because they felt that I was stepping on their feet especially when I talked about human rights and health rights. Once, I participated in a forum held at Njiru Health Centre. I spoke to several men and women about sexual offenc¬es during one of their support group meetings. The men insisted that I was misleading their women in saying that they have to give consent to their husbands before having sex; any penetration without the lady’s consent is considered as a rape case. They argued that the men have every right over their women and that the women have to submit to them.

Another time one of my church pastors told me that he was not happy with my new job that advocates for the rights of sex workers, MSMs and the LGBTI community. He said that I was going against the teachings of the church.

Regardless of these challenges, I have enjoyed working in the community as a CHA. I am happy at the end of the day knowing that someone has been sensitised about their health rights; someone has been linked to a place where they can get support especially a health care facility; a victim of rape has not been denied justice, and the community has been empowered not to stigmatise others especially in matters of HIV and AIDS.

I have to say that the friends I have made are much more than the enemies. This is because many times even the ones that I felt had become my enemies have ended up calling me at some point because they wanted assistance in one way or the other. This includes a pastor who wanted me to go and speak during a couples meeting in his church. He also invited me to go and talk to children about children’s rights.

I have to say that am very grateful to KELIN courtesy of ARASA for training and giving me a chance to engage in community health rights advocacy work. This has opened many platforms for me to address issues of human rights especially health rights and the need for advocacy.

Many organisations that I have been networking when it comes to creating awareness on health rights and treatment literacy during support groups such as the Nilinde Programme, Lea Toto and EDARP, appreciate KELIN both for training and sending me to work in the community. This is because an empowered community is a stable community.

During one of my regular counselling sessions at the Nairobi Juvenile Center, one of my clients who was just one week old at the centre shared with me a very sad experience. He narrated how he was unwell and had been mistreated from the time he was brought in. He had not received any form of medication even though he was asthmatic and was in dire need of an inhaler. To make matters worse, he had been taken to work in a quarry that exposed him to a lot of dust that worsened his condition. This caught my attention because even as he sat there pouring out his heart, he looked so sick and in need of medical attention.

At the end of our one-hour session, I took the matter up with the officer in charge of welfare. The officer was very hostile at first and would hear none of it, insisting that it was common for the inmates to make stories up to get sympathy.

At first, I was quiet to listen to him. When I realised that he did not intend to do anything, I decided to test the waters by disclosing to him that apart from being a counsellor, I was also a Community Health Advocate, advocating for human rights. To my surprise that caught his attention and within a few moments he invited me to sit down and tell him exactly what I wanted.

I gladly sat down and explained to him that the boy was not feeling well and was in urgent need of medical attention. I further explained to him that the boy was a minor and denying him medical care was violating his right to health, which is an offence according to the Constitution of Kenya.

He became very angry with me for doubling up as a counsellor and someone else. He checked again with me to make sure that there was no camera with me. Of course, we normally leave everything at the gate before getting into the premises but he just wanted to be sure.

He became very angry with me for doubling up as a counsellor and someone else. He checked again with me to make sure that there was no camera with me. Of course, we normally leave everything at the gate before getting into the premises but he just wanted to be sure.

What followed is that he called for the boy and immediately the boy was taken to the doctor for medical examination. The following week when I went for the weekly counselling session, I was glad to see that the boy’s health had improved. He had an inhaler; an extra warm pullover and he had been removed from the quarry work and transferred to the library where his work was just to arrange the books and make sure that the library was in order.

This was a great relief to me. The officer in charge of welfare has since been a very good friend and occasionally calls me to go and talk to the boys on matters relating to character building and behaviour change. I also take such opportunities to raise awareness on TB because there is a lot of congestion within prisons. As such, I empower them to keep their rooms well ventilated and to seek help whenever they notice any symptoms of TB. I also encourage them to use handkerchiefs while coughing to protect others from infections. Up to date, I still wonder what would have been the fate of that boy had I not advocated for his right.

KELIN in partnership with the Kenya Sex Workers Alliance (KESWA) and Lwala Community Alliance with financial and technical support from ARASA launched the Kenya National HIV, TB and Human Rights Training and Advocacy Country Programme. This programme was implemented in five counties of Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Homa Bay and Migori, through the Community Health Volunteers otherwise referred to as Community Health Advocates (CHAs). The five counties were selected due to the high prevalence rates of HIV, TB and human rights violations concerning key populations (sex workers, men who have sex with men and injecting drug users). The programme undertook to realise the following objectives. To enhance the capacity of CSOs, CBOs and communities to advocate and create demand for HIV, TB and SRH services in five Kenyan counties by March 2019; advocate for an enabling legal environment through a review of laws, policies and practices that act as barriers to access to HIV, TB and SRH services in Kenya by March 2019; facilitate access to justice in respect of human rights violations affecting persons living with and those affected by HIV and TB in Kenya by March 2019; and strengthen networks of CSOs, CBOs and communities that will hold duty bearers accountable in the provision of HIV, TB and SRH services in Kenya by March 2019.

Damaris is among the 30 Community Health Advocates (CHAs) from the five counties recruited and taken through the basic and advanced training by KELIN and the partners. After the training in September 2017, the CHAs were commissioned and tasked to raise awareness on HIV and TB rights, increase treatment literacy, and demand for quality health care services among the community members within their counties. Being natives of their communities, the CHAs understood the social dynamics of their localities. This enabled them to provide objective counselling and education that helped to shape the opinions of the community with limited resistance and contributed to the strengthening of community health facility linkages. They also provide facts to demystify myths and misconceptions associated with HIV, TB, SRH and issues of key populations.

Through these efforts, stigma and discrimination and other forms of human rights violations of persons living with HIV, TB and other vulnerable populations have significantly reduced. The CHAs have also been instrumental in advocating for strengthened linkages between communities and health services on HIV and TB testing, care and treatment as well as sexual reproductive health. They hold regular feedback meetings and conduct community outreaches by leveraging on existing community platforms including chief’s barazas (councils), community dialogue forums, social gatherings, seminars/workshops, trainings and in health facilities. These outreaches target the duty bearers, community members in general but with more attention to persons living with and affected by HIV and TB, key populations, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), Community Based Organizations (CBOs) and the media.

There’s something odd happens to blokes’ brains. As soon as you pass 55 or so the inside of your head turns to mush, and you find yourself getting all soppy and sentimental. All your life you’ve tried to be the tough guy. You’ve tried being stoical and keep a stiff upper lip. And then the sight of an old bus makes you all dewy eyed. Is it senility? Is this how it starts?

Seeing these buses brings back so many memories of my childhood in St Helens in the 1960’s.

I can remember the old market in Bridge St. That was the terminus for the Rainhill & Prescot buses (we lived in Rainhill at the time). At the front of the market there was a tea stall where the drivers and conductors would have a quick cuppa and a ciggie between trips. A couple of minutes before departure time they would climb aboard, but the driver wouldn’t start up immediately. He’d release handbrake and let the bus roll down the incline a few dozen yards to where the passengers were waiting to get on.

Then, when it was time to go, the conductor would press the bell twice. As the driver started the engine the lights would flicker. I remember my dad would make the same joke every single time. As the engine spluttered into life he’d say, “Ooh, that’s a nasty cough you’ve got, mister!”

I remember the sounds the engines made. The Leyland buses had a bubbly, gurgling sound, like a babbling brook. They’d give out a gentle rasp under acceleration. The AEC’s, on the other hand, had a high pitched asthmatic whine.

I remember the sound the old ticket machines made as the conductor cranked the handle round and tore off your ticket (“Two and two halves to Prescot, please”). (“Move down the bus! Plenty of room on top. Any more fares, please!”)

I can remember all these tiny details and so many more, but I’ll be damned if I can remember what I had for breakfast this morning. Or if I even had breakfast at all.

Here's a weird thing.

So we're hiking up the steepest portion of the Burro Trail, taking a lot of breaks because the trail was at an elevation about 8,000 feet higher than where we live, and it was really steep, and we're old and fat and mildly asthmatic and just horribly out-of-shape. While we were on one of these breaks, we saw a man and teen boy coming up behind us much more quickly because they live in Colorado (you can tell), so we let them pass. The man said "hello" as he marched past us, and I said, "hey, there," but was struck by a wave of recognition. I sat on it, though, because one of my more intense social anxieties is accidentally claiming to recognize somebody who turns out not to be that person, and I don't want to start an awkward conversation with a stranger, and it was really unreasonable that I should see anyone I know on this trail. So the man and boy walked on.

As it turned out, though, they stopped for lunch not far ahead of us. The man said, "Hello, again," and I paused and took a long look at him. After a moment, curiosity overcame anxiety, and I said, "Jack?" The man's eyes widened, and he looked at me more closely. "Clint?" "Yeah." "Holy shit!"

I had an association with the Earth Sciences Department at the University of Illinois at Chicago for a while between 2011 and 2013, and Jack was one of the guys working in the department at the time. He also happened to live about a block from me, just across Fullerton Avenue from my old place on Maplewood, and we probably could have spent a lot of time hanging out and drinking beer (he's a big fan of beer) if I weren't such a goof about that sort of thing. About seven years ago, he moved to Colorado and took a temporary science job with the National Park Service, doing digital scans of significant landscape features, so I hadn't seen him since 2013. I come out to Colorado a lot, and I knew he was out here, but I'd never looked him up. As it turned out, I didn't have to. I just had to wait until I ran into him on a trail. So here's a picture of me and Jack on a trail.

Editor's Note: This is a really bad picture of me that illustrates a lot of why I found this trail so difficult, and I normally wouldn't post it, except the story's just too good to skip. On the upside, this specific picture has kicked me into gear about getting healthy, and I've lost about 15 pounds since Robin took it. Election week kind of wrecked the diet, but I'm getting back into it today.

"The Legend of the .01-Mile Man"

There once was a man named Carl. Carl was a big guy—not just in size, but in personality. He loved donuts, detested stairs, and had long ago declared war on anything labeled “low fat.” One day, while polishing off a family-sized bag of chips meant for six (Carl considered that a serving suggestion), he watched a documentary about hikers conquering Everest.

Inspired, he declared, “If they can climb Everest, I can walk .01 miles!”

Now, .01 miles is roughly 52.8 feet—about half a basketball court. But Carl didn’t pick just any sidewalk. No, he chose the steepest, hilliest, twistiest park trail in town. A place where even squirrels walked sideways from the incline.

On Day One, Carl strapped on his brand-new walking shoes (which still had the price tags flapping), stretched dramatically like a pro athlete, took five steps… and sat on a bench wheezing like an asthmatic accordion. He blamed the incline. And the humidity. And the mysterious gravitational pull of hot dog vendors.

Still, he came back the next day. And the next. For 365 days, Carl attempted the .01-mile walk. He brought energy bars, motivational playlists, a smartwatch that beeped “Seriously?” every time he moved, and even a friend once—but the friend got tired of dragging Carl back to the car like a sack of potatoes.

Carl developed rituals: pre-walk meditation (napping), carb-loading (a box of muffins), and hydration (root beer). He told strangers he was training for “an elite micro-marathon.”

Then, one glorious spring morning—birds chirping, sun shining, a Taco Bell breakfast burrito waiting at home—Carl stood at the trailhead, breathed deeply, and waddled forward with purpose. Ten feet. Twenty. Forty. Fifty-two-point-eight feet. He did it. He reached the .01-mile marker.

He threw his arms up like Rocky, scaring a nearby jogger. A duck quacked in approval. Carl sobbed joyfully and collapsed on a bench, gasping, “I am the mountain!”

The next day? He celebrated by driving past the trail and honking at the .01-mile sign. It honked back in spirit.

Carl never walked it again, but for one glorious day, he was a legend.

Edible Parts: Flowers, Fruit,

Edible Uses: Coloring, Tea, Jelly, Wine, Pie,

Fruit - raw or cooked. The flavor of the raw fruit is not acceptable to many tastes, though when cooked it makes delicious jams, preserves, pies and so forth. It can be used fresh or dried, the dried fruit being less bitter. The fruit is used to add flavor and color to preserves, jams, pies, sauces, chutneys etc., it is also often used to make wine. The fruit is about 8mm in diameter and is borne in large clusters. Some caution is advised, see the notes below on toxicity. Flowers - raw or cooked. They can also be dried for later use. The flowers are crisp and somewhat juicy, they have an aromatic smell and flavor and are delicious raw as a refreshing snack on a summers day, though look out for the insects. The flowers are used to add a muscatel flavor to stewed fruits, jellies and jams (especially gooseberry jam). They are often used to make a sparkling wine. A sweet tea is made from the dried flowers. The leaves are used to impart a green coloring to oils and fats.

CAUTION: The leaves and stems are poisonous. The fruit of many species (although no records have been seen for this species) has been known to cause stomach upsets to some people. Any toxin the fruit might contain is liable to be of very low toxicity and is destroyed when the fruit is cooked.

MEDICINAL USES: Anti-inflammatory, Aperient, Diaphoretic, Diuretic, Emetic, Emollient, Expectorant, Galactogogue, Hemostatic, Laxative, Ophthalmic, Purgative, Salve, Stimulant,

Elder has a very long history of household use as a medicinal herb and is also much used by herbalists. The plant has been called 'the medicine chest of country people'. The flowers are the main part used in modern herbalism, though all parts of the plant have been used at times. Stimulant. The inner bark is collected from young trees in the autumn and is best sun-dried. It is diuretic, a strong purgative and in large doses emetic. It is used in the treatment of constipation and arthritic conditions. An emollient ointment is made from the green inner bark. The leaves can be used both fresh or dry. For drying, they are harvested in periods of fine weather during June and July. The leaves are purgative, but are more nauseous than the bark. They are also diaphoretic, diuretic, expectorant and hemostatic. The juice is said to be a good treatment for inflamed eyes. An ointment made from the leaves is emollient and is used in the treatment of bruises, sprains, chilblains, wounds etc.. The fresh flowers are used in the distillation of 'Elder Flower Water'. The flowers can be preserved with salt to make them available for distillation later in the season. The water is mildly astringent and a gentle stimulant. It is mainly used as a vehicle for eye and skin lotions. The dried flowers are diaphoretic, diuretic, expectorant, galactogogue and pectoral. An infusion is very effective in the treatment of chest complaints and is also used to bathe inflamed eyes. The infusion is also a very good spring tonic and blood cleanser. Externally, the flowers are used in poultices to ease pain and abate inflammation. Used as an ointment, it treats chilblains, burns, wounds, scalds etc.. The fruit is depurative, weakly diaphoretic and gently laxative. A tea made from the dried berries is said to be a good remedy for colic and diarrhea. The fruit is widely used for making wines, preserves etc., and these are said to retain the medicinal properties of the fruit. The pith of young stems is used in treating burns and scalds. The root is no longer used in herbal medicine but it formerly had a high reputation as an emetic and purgative that was very effective against dropsy. A homeopathic remedy is made from the fresh inner bark of young branches. It relieves asthmatic symptoms and spurious croup in children. The German Commission E Monographs, a therapeutic guide to herbal medicine, approve Sambucus nigra for cough and bronchitis, fevers and colds

OTHER USES: Compost, Cosmetic, Dye, Black, Green, Blue, Purple, Fungicide, Hedge, Insecticide, Litmus, Microscope, Musical, Pioneer, Pipes, Repellent, Wood

The plant is a valuable addition to the compost heap, its flowers are an alternative ingredient of 'QR' herbal compost activator and the roots of the plant improve fermentation of the compost heap when growing nearby. The leaves are used as an insect repellent, very effective when rubbed on the skin though they do impart their own unique fragrance. They can be powdered and placed amongst plants to act as a deterrent, or made into a spray when they act as an insecticide. This is prepared by boiling 3 - 4 handfuls of leaves in a liter of water, then straining and allowing to cool before applying. Effective against many insects, it also treats various fungal infections such as leaf rot and powdery mildew. The dried flowering shoots are used to repel insects, rodents etc.. The flowers are used in skin lotions, oils and ointments. Tolerant of salt-laden gales, this species can be grown as a shelter hedge in exposed maritime areas, it is rather bare in the winter though. This is an excellent pioneer species to use when re-establishing woodlands. It is very tough and wind-resistant, grows quickly and provides shelter for longer-lived and taller woodland species to establish. It will generally maintain itself in the developing woodland, though usually in the sunnier positions. A dye is obtained from the fruit and the bark. The bark of older branches and the root have been used as an ingredient in dyeing black. A green dye is obtained from the leaves when alum is used as a mordant. The berries yield various shades of blue and purple dyes. They have also been used as a hair dye, turning the hair black. The blue coloring matter from the fruit can be used as a litmus to test if something is acid or alkaline. It turns green in an alkaline solution and red in an acid solution. The pith in the stems of young branches pushes out easily and the hollow stems thus made have been used as pipes for blowing air into a fire. They can also be made into musical instruments. The pith of the wood is used for making microscope slides and also for treating burns and scalds. The mature wood is white and fine-grained. It is easily cut and polishes well. Valued highly by carpenters, it has been used for making skewers, mathematical instruments, toys etc..

Urbex is often creepy. But it's a lot creepier when you decide to explore on a foggy day! Brrr!

Today, we are exploring a former sanatorium and preventorium for asthmatic children from 4 yeard old to 15 yeard old, closed in 1995. I didn't manage to know why it closed (very few information on the net).

The main building is a 2 storey building. A pool and a stable are close to it.

No graphic content in comments please! Thanks

Beware I have over 200 more on my neck ,torso etc Itch like anything and all carried on the wind. Seems the Government need to get control of this horrible moth but Local Council in Maldon are not interested. There are millions in Heybridge Basin Essex

We Are Not Alone.

Residents in Newhaven are scratching themselves silly after the sudden emergence of tens of thousands of brown-tail moth larvae.

While for most people the creepy crawlies are harmless, they are causing some people to break out in painful skin rashes and their hair can cause serious problems for anyone with a respiratory illness or hay fever.

Hayley Stevens has come out in red weals after the caterpillars invaded her home.

She said "I haven’t felt this itchy since I had chickenpox as a child, and I admit calamine lotion isn’t an especially good look.

"The caterpillars are a real problem when the little hairs on their backs break off and float in the wind."

The nest was horrific, it was white like candy floss, filled with twigs and more caterpillars than I care to see again in the whole of my life, it was awful

Hayley Stevens

Hayley, 50, who suffers from asthma, has tried over-the-counter insecticides without much luck.

She and husband Dave have contacted the council but they say private gardens are not their responsibility.

The caterpillars will gradually disappear as they turn into moths.

But until they do, the garden is pretty much out-of-bounds, and Hayley and her family are left treating their painful rashes with creams and anti-histamines.

"They are making us prisoners in our own home.

"We've got terrible rashes, suffering headaches and hayfever, and they are especially dangerous to me as I'm an asthmatic.

"We can't open are doors or windows, they are everywhere" said the grandmother-of-five.

She and Dave first spotted a few crawling around their patio a week or two ago.

A nest of around 2,000 of the inch-long caterpillars was later found at the bottom of the garden.

"I destroyed it but we are still getting loads of them from the adjoining fields" said Hayley.

"The nest was horrific, it was white like candy floss, filled with twigs and more caterpillars than I care to see again in the whole of my life, it was awful."

Brown-tail moth caterpillars emerge most springs, but experts aren't sure why they are so active this year.

Craig Davies, from Sussex Pest Control, said "It’s a problem which has only come around in the last 10 years or so, and it gets worse and worse, though I started noticing them about four years ago."

He said that around mid-May the moths emerge from their tent-like cocoons whetre they have been growing as caterpillars.

“Children are at great risk. Studies show that children who are continually exposed to dust mite fecal material are more likely to develop asthma, allergies, and eczema.”

With allergic and asthmatic children the best form of treatment for dust mite allergies remains one of avoidance. A home allergen reduction plan has been recognized as being an essential part to the management of asthma and other related symptoms, and therefore cleanliness in all aspects of the home environment is critical. We suggest deep cleaning every 6-12 months in addition to weekly vacuuming, the use of air purifiers, and to replace toxic chemicals within your home with more environmentally safe products.

In August, 1992 two cheques, each for £400, were presented at the Bowlers Lounge to Crossroads, and to Asthmatic Children. The money had been raised by Mad Bowlers on Tour, a group of cyclists who in eight days covered more than 730 miles, travelling as far as Uig on the Isle of Skye. In the picture were, from left - John Ramsay, Ronald Coates, Kathleen Carr from Crossroads Angus; Colin Stewart, Neil Milne, Dr Arnold Hornsby, Asthmatic Children; Sandy Jarvie and Mrs Linda Ramsay, Bowlers proprietor.

Where have I been? Computer death and worry bead juggling, mostly! : )

But now I'm back and a published author, too! Sounds grand, eh?

Oh, okay... I'm a self-published author. Suddenly, the grandness of the opening sentence falls like scales from a lover's eyes when they return home unexpectedly early from work to find you wearing their underwear and masturbating over a photograph of her mother.

Look. It only happened the once. Let it go! Ahem.

It's not exactly the cheapest way to produce a book, and I'm already regretting not fully investigating its pop-up Free Hug potential; the book could've then immediately consoled the buyer. As it is, I've decided to go with offering a FREE pack of crayons to eat for all purchasers.

However, I have uploaded the entire book as a PREVIEW which can be seen if you follow this link: www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/3276567

There are a few photographic contributors to the book, some of whom lurk in these very hallowed halls, but the majority of the shots were taken by my wife, Sue. Clearly, I taught her well! : )

Footnote: Well, I say "I'm back..." but can't currently edit photos efficiently as PSE7 isn't compatible with W7 64-bit and it runs like an asthmatic ant carrying particularly heavy shopping on the Virtual Machine XP Mode! Arse biscuits. : 7

What are the health benefits of camphor?

The camphor is an extremely versatile herbal remedy that should be used cautiously. Its compounds act on the involuntary nervous system and trigger a variety of effects. Camphor inhalations facilitate coughing and phlegm secretions in bronchitis.

Medicinal benefits of camphor

The rubs camphor stimulate circulation and have a positive effect on heart disease. However, other medicinal plants or drugs are now preferably used for heart problems or coughs. The discomfort due to rheumatic problems also respond to an external treatment with camphor. Its application mainly extends to external muscles and aching joints.

Strictly speaking, camphor (Cinnamomum camphora) is not a medicinal plant, but the ingredient of a medicinal plant, that is, the camphor tree. This ingredient is obtained from the wood and especially from the bark of the camphor tree.

The camphor tree is one of the laurel family and is primarily native to Southeast Asia. The good quality extract comes from plants over 50 years old. Meanwhile, camphor has prevailed as a plant name, but medicinal.

The most striking feature of the first encounter with camphor is the unpleasant acrid smell. This odor is due to the volatile components of camphor essential oil.

In processing this oil, it is purified and camphor remains the only substance. This is further processed as a crystalline powder, mainly in solutions.

Indications for using camphor

•This dissolves bronchial secretions, stimulates circulation, relaxes the bronchi, inhibits inflammation, promotes skin circulation (for external use only)

•Maintain a safe dose - taking large amounts is life threatening

•Not suitable for asthmatics and other chronic respiratory diseases

•Not suitable for pregnant women, infants and children

•Used during: rheumatic disorders, muscle tension, heart problems, low blood pressure, bronchitis, inflammation of the upper respiratory tract.

Camphor benefits

In modern herbal medicine, it is used primarily in rheumatism and other diseases associated with muscle or joint pain. The application is done in the form of rubbing or hydrotherapy.

Mode of action against rheumatism and muscle pain

This ingredient irritates the skin and stimulates the nerve endings, which eventually leads to an anesthetic effect. Pain and itching can be mitigated for this reason. At the same time, camphor stimulates circulation near the surface of the skin. This accelerates the healing of inflammation, for example. Also, the supply of oxygen and nutrients is increased in the area of pain.

Due to skin irritation, you should reduce the external application to the necessary level. Most camphor products, such as alcohol or ointments, should not be used more than 4 times a day.

Effect on heart ailments

The external use of camphor plays an important role in the treatment of heart problems. Creams with this ingredient were long believed to stimulate circulation to relieve heart problems. This seems to be out of date for now. However, when used internally, it is said to have a cardiotonic and hypertensive effect. The exact mode of action, however, is unknown.

Effect on low blood pressure

Internal use of this ingredient in the form of tablets or capsules is aimed at stabilizing the walls of the blood vessels and stimulating circulation. That could explain an effect against low blood pressure.

Effect on the respiratory tract

Camphor is irritating to the mucous membranes of the upper respiratory tract when rubbed in (indirectly by inhaling volatile components) or when inhaled. This is supposed to trigger an effect that relaxes the respiratory tract and promotes the expectoration of mucus, especially from the bronchi.

The manufacturers of the corresponding products claim a similar effect in case of a cold. In this case, what it does is narrow the small blood vessels in the nasal mucosa and therefore have a decongestant effect. However, this effect is clearly unproven.

In addition, the antimicrobial effect of this plant is used for respiratory diseases. The volatile compounds in camphor oil have a disinfecting effect. Colds that cause illness can be eliminated faster, and new germs are more difficult to penetrate. Also, camphor stimulates the respiratory center in the brainstem. Consequently, breathing for colds can be improved.

Some care for use

It must be used with great care due to the danger of poisoning. Released vapors can cause respiratory arrest. As little as 0.2 g of camphor occasionally causes severe reactions in adults. For babies, the intake of just 1 gram is life threatening. This and other essential oils should not be used in babies and young children under the age of two. To be safe, it should not be used externally until age six.

Either externally or internally, camphor should not be used in children suffering from seizures and / or fever attacks without medical advice.

Also, it is not suitable for people with asthma or other chronic respiratory diseases due to the essential oil content. Essential oils can irritate mucous membranes in such a way that asthma attacks can occur.

In case of liver diseases and diseases of the biliary tract, a doctor should always be consulted before use. This is important because this ingredient can cause serious damage to liver cells.

Basically, it can only be applied on intact skin, never on open wounds or burns. Due to the lack of a skin barrier, too much camphor could enter the body and damage cells and tissues.

This ingredient is transferred to the fetus in the womb and absorbed in breast milk. Therefore, pregnant and lactating women should not be treated with camphor.

Beware of overdose

Like all medicines, this ingredient should definitely be stored safely and protected from children. It is included in many cold remedies that are also used in children.

Also pay attention to the dosing instructions for the products. Overdose poses serious health risks. Taking large amounts of camphor causes seizures, epileptic seizures, and severe nerve damage, which can lead to coma and death.

Side effects and use of camphor

Side effects of taking camphor can be headache, restlessness, dizziness, or hot flashes. An overdose manifests itself in nausea, shortness of breath, panic attacks, and memory disorders. In case of these complaints, discontinue the use of camphor immediately and consult a doctor if necessary. When applied externally, skin irritation or ulceration (eczema) is possible.

Many camphor consumer products contain alcohol. These products are not suitable for alcoholics, nor for pregnant women, infants and children.

It seems like no matter how much you exercise or what diet you’re on, the stubborn fat on your belly, thighs, and buttocks just won’t go away. Genetics most likely dictates where most of your fat accumulates, although women tend to store fat in the hips and thighs, in addition to the belly and buttocks. At Tahoe Women’s Care, we know how frustrating stubborn fat can be, and we’re here to help you understand some of the things that cause it and what you can do to eliminate pockets of stubborn fat for good. www.mynewsdesk.com/a2z-health-tips/pressreleases/keto-adv...

(old pic, no new ones of me due to lap top crashage b4 xmas)

16 things about me:

1. I am asthmatic, and allergic to cats, but own 2 (I have adapted, I am borg, lol)

2. I am 8 years and 9 months younger than my husband.

3. I have a fear of needles.

4. I don't like butterflies wafting near me.

5. I am an only child.

6. I would love a pet rat (so would my cats!)

7. I could read and spell very well by the age of 4, but my brain works faster than my hands, and I often write/mis-spell words getting ahead of myself by skipping to later letters- I need to pace myself!!

8. I have a scar on my left shoulder where I had a 'dodgy' lump removed. It healed badly and the scar is bigger than the original lump! The lump? Well, results said it was only pretending to be dodgy! (but better safe than sorry).

9. I have a photographic memory.

10. I would love to have a tattoo of 3 stars in rainbow colours- one for each of my children... but... see no3!!

11. I yearn for a minimalist pastel coloured house, but in reality, love 'stuff' and bright colours too much.

12. According to my daughter, when I smile, I have more wrinkles than my 65yr old Mum!

13. I was 18yrs and 5 weeks old when I had my first child, and it took me 3 days to deliver her.

14. I have Benign Essential Tremors- mostly in my left hand, a little in my right, and just a tiny 'nod' in my head occasionally. Caffiene, stress and medication can make it worse.

15. My favourite foods are: candy floss, cabbage, salmon and fudge, but not all on the same plate! I love to drink lager, cranberry juice or coke- but that last one is banned- I'm properly addicted and used to consume 2 litres+ a day, every day!!! o_0

16. At 12wks pregnant with my 3rd baby, I was so bumpy, the docs thought he was going to be twins- as it runs in both my Mum and Dads family, and I was next in line!! 0_o Twin Spencers would have been cute, but I'm pleased it was just him! lol.

Oh, and after they thought my tummy would stay 4-5 months pg looking forever, but I proved them wrong again! :D

During cold winter months the caterpillars of the Brown-tail Moth hibernate in greyish silken "tents", or as I call them "Caterpillar Tents"!

In Spring, as the weather becomes warmer, they leave the tents to forage for food. The caterpillars have small toxic barbed hairs all over their bodies, which can break off easily and irritate the skin - in some cases severely. Some people can suffer a type of asthmatic reaction.

So although the silken tents are impressive constructions, and I love photographing them, they are not something you want to find in trees and bushes near you!

Notes: "Wizard of Photography" Elias Goldensky was born in the small Ukrainian village of Radomysl on September 9, 1867. His father Benjamin was an oculist, and opened a photography studio in the commercial district of Kremenchug in the 1870s. After the assassination of Emperor Alexander II in 1881, the subsequent anti-Semitic pogroms resulted in oppressive living conditions for Jewish families like the Goldenskys. Elias attempted to supplement the family income by becoming a member of a local acting troupe. At the age of 23, he, his father, grandmother, and two younger brothers, emigrated to the United States, and settled in Philadelphia, which at the time was America's second largest city. Philadelphia was the natural choice because of its large Ukrainian Jewish population. Young Mr. Goldensky quickly joined William J. Kuebler Jr.'s portrait studio as a retoucher. Less than a year later, he began working for Frederick Gutekunst, and spent the next four years as a retoucher and part-time printer. In 1895, Mr. Goldensky opened his own studio, which had stiff competition from the city's more than 130 portrait studios. Despite its ghetto location, Mr. Goldensky's studio quickly earned a reputation for producing elegant portraits that soon grabbed the attention of Philadelphia's most elite citizens. Mr. Goldensky's photography studio remained profitable until World War I, when the business of portrait photography began a steady decline that bottomed out during the Great Depression. Nevertheless, he remained in demand as a photographic exhibitor, convention lecturer, and member of several photographic societies. Louis Walton Sipley named Mr. Goldensky to serve on the first board of directors of Philadelphia's American Museum of Photography in 1940. The photographic maverick dubbed the "Wizard of Photography" died from an asthmatic attack on March 10, 1943, and his massive personal archives of 1,500 prints and more than 1,600 negatives and transparencies were donated to the museum. After founder Louis Walton Sipley's death, his widow sold the museum's holdings to the 3M Company, which were donated to the George Eastman House in 1972.

A funicular, also known as an inclined plane or cliff railway, is a cable railway in which a cable attached to a pair of tram-like vehicles on rails moves them up and down a steep slope; the ascending and descending vehicles counterbalance each other.

The basic idea of funicular operation is that two cars are always attached to each other by a cable, which runs through a pulley at the top of the slope. Counterbalancing of the two cars, with one going up and one going down, minimizes the energy needed to lift the car going up. Winching is normally done by an electric drive that turns the pulley. Sheave wheels guide the cable to and from the drive mechanism and the slope cars.

Bottom towrope[edit source | editbeta]

The cars can be attached to a second cable running through a pulley at the bottom of the incline in case the gravity force acting on the vehicles is too low to operate them on the slope. One of the pulleys must be designed as a tensioning wheel to avoid slack in the ropes. In this case, the winching can also be done at the lower end of the incline. This practice is used for funiculars with gradients below 6%, funiculars using sledges instead of cars, or any other case where it is not ensured that the descending car is always able to pull out the cable from the pulley in the station on the top of the incline.[2]

Gravity plane[edit source | editbeta]

Funiculars used in mines were sometimes unpowered gravity planes, also known as self-acting inclines or brake inclines. The weight of descending loaded wagons was used to pull the empty mine wagons.[4]

At the moment the palki carriers charge exorbitant rates which is paid by the rich and the very rich hijra gurus , too old to climb the Malangad mountains..

The rate can be from 4000 to 7000 one way I am told but it is a tough job mind you , and if you have the money than this is the only way to reach the Haji Malang Holy shrine as there is no motor able road to the top.

It takes me over 3 hours to reach the top as I tire easily ,being a asthmatic and a diabetic too and I climb and come down the mountains barefeet..

and how was your weekend?

well, that nebulizer photo from my last upload was rather prescient, it turns out. The cold turned into pneumonia, coupled with asthmatic lungs and then to make things more exciting, he had an allergic reaction to one of the meds the pediatrician put in the nebulizer. Luckily, we were in the pediatrician's office, but there was an ambulance. And there were life saving moments in the ER. And, wow. I am starting to cry again just thinking about it. But as of last night, we are home again, and the twinkle is back in his eyes and the labored breathing is gone. Grateful for that. And really grateful for quick thinking, well-trained doctors and modern medicine and the fact that I have quick access to both.

Hug your littles tight through the storm. Both the one on the news and the one that only hits your house.

Regine went to Manila for the first time to work as a kasambahay when she was 17 years old. She left her family in Samar so that she could help with the family expenses. Her mother is asthmatic. Working in Manila will go a long way to aid medical expenses. Her main task at her employer’s home was to do general housework. She worked with another kasambahay and friend who came with her from Samar. Although Regine’s main task was housework, she helped her friend at times when it came to taking care of the kids. After a year of service as kasambahay, she went back to Samar to continue her high school education. © ILO/J. Aliling 2015

We have some grand plans for South By Southwest 2008. Last year we organized a showcase as well as a day party at Okay Mountain Gallery that featured local bands and businesses, including some phenomenal performances and equally delicious chocolate. Well, we've upgraded this year! The day party was so successful that in addition to a showcase, we're holding a two-day party at Okay Mountain Gallery this year. A few of our favorite sponsors will be returning for the day party, as well as some new favorites.

A few of our artists will also be playing in some other non-AK venues:

Castanets will be playing at Todd P's all-ages patio BBQ party at Ms Beas on Thursday March 13, 1pm. Shara Worden of My Brightest Diamond will be at the Paste-Stereogum Lounge at Volume (612 6th Street) on Thursday March 13 from 12-12:40pm. And Cryptacize will play at SC Distribution's day party at End of an Ear (2209 S. 1st) on Friday March 14 at 1pm.

Don Oliver

At 6 feet 4 inches tall and weighing in at 124kgs during the height of his sporting career Don Oliver was a big man with an even bigger heart. “The Don” renowned New Zealand strong man spent much of his life helping others. [1] [2]

He was a gold and silver medalist in the Commonwealth games and an Olympic weight lifter representing his country at 3 Olympic games in 1960, 1964 and 1968. [1] From 1959 Don Oliver was the heavyweight champion for 10 years running. He drew a crowd of supporters whenever he competed and was the public face of his sport [3] Don is the only lifter to have won the Lonsdale cup which is awarded for excellence in a games sport [4] “The Don” was considered to be up there with the world’s elite. His best clean and jerk lift was 40lbs within the world record at an impressive 250kgs. Although Don retired from lifting in 1968 to focus on his business career he still had a lot to do with the sport for some years and in 1974 he coached the NZ Commonwealth Games team in Christchurch who came away with a record of 7 medals. [3] He also trained All Blacks Michael Jones, Inga “The Winga” Tuigamala, Eroni Clarke, Craig Dowd and many other successful athletes. [2]

Don Oliver was born and raised in Avondale Auckland, and when he was 21 years of age he purchased some land in Glen Eden. He worked as a butcher at Hellaby’s in South Auckland, and went on to teach butchery at Manukau Technical Institute. With his rise to sporting fame Don developed his own brand of barbells and exercise programmes. Don proved his theory that weightlifting could be of assistance to asthmatics yet was unable to undertake a specialist’s request to train asthmatic patients due to his weightlifting commitments. However once his weightlifting career had ended he sold his exercise equipment company and used the proceeds to build a house for he and his wife Maureen and a gym on his land in Glen Eden to help people from all walks of life with their health and fitness including asthmatics. And while the Gym was being completed he ran classes for asthmatics under the house. Don eventually had 4 fitness centres operating.

Don was the founding chairman of the Auckland Asthma society and after discovering that particular exercises helped him with his mood at a time when he was burnt out, he developed exercise programmes to assist others in overcoming depression. [2] Don was a deeply religious man who had a passion to help others particularly young people, and it was this work that inspired a group of West Auckland leaders to create the Don Oliver Youth Sport Foundation in Dons memory in 1996 [2] [5] The foundation in which the Oliver family are also involved are funded by the West Auckland community and provide scholarships and support to talented young West Auckland athletes [5]

In the 1981 Queens Birthday honours Don was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire for his services to weightlifting and the community. [1] And in 1990 he was inducted into the New Zealand Sports Hall Of Fame [3]

Don discovered that he was dying of cancer late in 1995. [3] He passed away on the 26th February 1996 and was interred at Waikumete Cemetery, Western Lawn A Row 5, Plot 1X [6]

His headstone reads:
