This set of photo was taken this morning during a Craft fair which we attended as vendors selling all things related to patchwork. Most shot were done by me but I also asked my son to take a few shot so I could see his point of view and it turned out really funny.

Assignment week 4 patterns: I spent tons of time looking at patterns and snapping shots. I got some funny looks as I pulled over to take pics of inane subjects!! I even took some shots at the courthouse. I have always wanted to take this shot. There are rows and rows of buses at this school. I took many shots and know this needs improvement. And that darn pole!! In my way!!

This was done in Photoshop CC. I used hue/saturation; iris blur; sharpen edges; cropped the image from the original; adjusted highlights/shadows; and the iris blur had several adjustments all by itself. My level of knowledge with Photoshop is average. The hardest part for me is focusing a image. I wanted the water drops to really pop out to the viewer. The light is coming in from the upper right. I hope I achieved that. I sure had a hard time picking the photo to post this week!
It looks like some little insect made a happy meal out of this little magnolia bud. This shrub is a magnolia shrub, and it is covered with buds that have developed and will emerge as next season’s flowers when the conditions are right. There are buds located up and down the branches, and, other than the fully emerged buds at the tips of the branches, the rest of them appear to be well protected within a bark covering. This probably serves to preserve the plant’s reproductive capacity in the event it is cut or damaged by weather or other environmental events. One can also observe lenticels (the white dots on the branch in the forefront of this picture) that provide the shrub with passive transpiration. In the spring, the leaves of this shrub will grow under the buds. Each leaf is responsible for nourishing its own bud, and each bud contains meristem cells within it. Thus, if the plant is cut, damaged or broken, the hormonal signals from meristem cells in the bud formerly above it (“telling” the bud not to grow) will thereby necessarily cease to flow downward, and this remaining bud will shoot up, forming a new leaf with a new bud. As we learned in class, this is an example of a simple morphology with a complex function. I have always wondered why buds appear on plants in the fall – the fact that it is the plant’s system for getting its reproductive apparatus set up for the following year is pretty interesting; the plant is thereby spreading out the use of its energy for reproductive purposes over time, as well as increasing its reproductive efficiency by ensuring that everything is ready to go once the conditions are just right.
Today I took the camera into Sleaford and visited the National Centre for Craft & Design, formerly known as The Hub.

I've been still playing catchup from vacations and our RAID server dying... so I haven't been keeping up with the DPS assignments. I figured I'd try to go back and and least post some of them, even though I'm past the deadline.
I knew about this assignment before going to New Brunswick, so when the kids at one of our family reunions decided to go fishing in the river, I figured it was the perfect time to snap some shots. They even caught a few fish which made for some great father-son photos. I loved the simplicity of this one though. He was done up like a right proper fisherman.

Starting to lose the window molding, bits of the fridge and stove in the brightness... not sure why the colors come out muddy looking to me.
Got a fantastic book about nature photography for my birthday. The book also contains some assignments.
Assignment 14 is about how film grain can improve your photos. I had to look through my archive for photos in which granularity can be a benefit and I had to explore the boundaries of this effect.
This is the second result.
This week was about the "Who Cares Aperture". The apertures of f/8 and f/11. I had to take a photo where depth doesn't matter and take a picture of a silhouette.

The purpose of this shot was to show how our hands are used to show emotion through communication with letter writing. I'm a personal fan of Black & White shots, and felt this shot was much more powerful without color. The original was cropped to show less of the paper to the right and push more focus on the hand itself. I used a gaussian blur to remove more of the clarity of the paper. I then used the level slider tool to adjust the light/dark balance in the lighting which also brought the inside of the hand from black to viewable. Photoshop was used to crop the image as well as the blur and level adjustments.
I think that the more I look at this, the more I would have rathered the written text to be in cursive writing, making it look more elegant.
