The intense gaze of those yellow eyes captivated me as we watched this Great Gray Owl (Strix nebulosa) hunting on this cloudy winter morning. Taken in Zim, MN (St. Louis County) on January 30, 2017.
Moods of Autumn
I always feel so fortunate when the fall weather provides clouds, fog and snow. Here is just a sample of what I experienced in the Southern Colorado San Juan mountains.
Have you stuck around in June Lake Loop to catch the sunset while enjoying its fall foliage? It's beyond wonderful, witnessing the Aspen trees glow in gold, especially the sun was shining through as if the leaves were translucent. Hurry up though. They don't last long. Soon the Loop road will be closed for winter.
During the return walk from Crater Lake I had to stop for this view overlooking Maroon Bells with the morning light highlighting all the aspens in their autumn splendor. In the distance is Highland Peak at 12,326 ft.
This was the only morning of this short Colorado trip with bright sunlight . . . but what a morning it was!

It is difficult to find more vibrant yellow/orange colors from these Aspen trees than these at the bottom of Mt Sneffels, in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado. After following a winding dirt road (CR-7) you arrive at the footsteps of Mt Sneffels, in a peaceful valley with a few horse and cows in open range. (horses are visible in tiny dots in the remote of the valley).

This view from near Ohio Pass shows the color all the way down into the valley. It's hard to show how big the valley really is, but the colors seem to go on forever.
South of Ouray on the Million Dollar Highway we found this marvelous lake at sunrise. Of course it wasn't hard to miss, as there were at least 2 dozen cars parked along the road doing the same thing I was doing! Sometimes I just want to stand back and shoot the scene with all the photogs in it! :)
Someday I will.

- www.kevin-palmer.com - It was the first time I've hiked to Solitude Falls and it was flowing pretty good. This was the start of a very hot day and it felt great to be standing here in the mist of the waterfall.

Aspen trees and ferns. Rocky Mountain National Park, Estes Park, Colorado. 2 image stitch with Cambo WRS1600 + Phase One IQ4 150 + Schneider 120 ASPH lens.
This was taken in the Granite Creek area of the park. We didn't go too far out on the trail....maybe half a mile. (We got up before the rest of the family to enjoy some hiking..something the others weren't all that into). We were surrounded by at least 3 bull elks, heard them bugling, but never saw them though. :( Of course, I don't think I would want to get between them and their turf war.
A menagerie of fall colors greets travelers to the Grand Tetons this year. I have never seen it so vivid and expressive before. Image taken in Grand Teton National Park of Wyoming.
