We went up to Crested Butte to try to catch some of the wildflower bloom this year. Our first trail was the Lupine Trail...which had quite a few lupines.

Moods of Autumn
I always feel so fortunate when the fall weather provides clouds, fog and snow. Here is just a sample of what I experienced in the Southern Colorado San Juan mountains.

Kendall Mountain is a popular ski area near the town of Silverton, Colorado. This photo was taken in September as the aspen and birch trees approached their peak autumn colors.
During my first outing into the Rawah Wilderness I missed the West Branch Trail and ended up walking on a service road that goes through this mature aspen grove.

I didn't park my Subie here to get a good picture. I parked to walk down a nearby trail and when I walked back to the car I thought "WOW"!

One of the trails we rode our bikes on was called the Lupine Trail. There were lots of Aspen Trees and Lupine flowers. I don't have photos of the flowers because I was too busy trying not to fall off my bike. This part of the trail was reasonably flat.

Photographed in 665 nanometer infrared using an IR modified Canon 20D and rendered in black and white.
My wife planned this trip to the Southwest in October to beat the heat , and we got to see some fantastic fall colors. We also found early snow in Southern Colorado on our way back. This was a beautiful rock filled river along the road that we were traveling for the scenery.
There was just NO way I was going to get that iconic shot of North Lake the morning we were there, what with the gazillions of photogs lining the shore--and I really wasn't interested in that anyway. There were so many other beautiful things all around the lake to photograph, not the least of which were the beautiful reflections on a near-windless morning. What really struck me about North Lake this year were the reds on some of the aspen trees that almost bordered on pink. They were simply beautiful, and I tried to capture a little of the color range here, as well as the striking white trunks (which is what I love so much about the aspens).
The color's not all gone yet--several significant lower elevation groves are not yet at peak, so I'll be back up next week to take one last shot at the eastern side before making a dash up to Yosemite for the color there.
A walk in the forest is always good for the mind and soul, hopefully this image will help clear your mind and feed your soul. Golden forest bed below and autumn aspen tree forest in the high elevation of The Colorado Rocky Mountains.
