A new, low-cost Texas Children’s Hospital vaccine gets approval for use in India
The goal is to make the vaccine available in other underserved nations across the globe to help prevent future variants of concern from forming.
A COVID-19 vaccine created at the Texas Children's Hospital Center for Vaccine Development in Houston has received emergency use authorization in India, after nearly 10 years of research and funding obstacles in 2020.
The goal is to make the vaccine – called Corbevax – available in other low- and middle-income nations across the globe to help prevent future variants of concern from forming.
“As long as we leave the southern hemisphere unvaccinated new variants of concern for us will emerge," said Dr. Peter Hotez, co-director of the Texas Children's Hospital Center for Vaccine Development and dean at Baylor's National School of Tropical Medicine. “The only way to stop it is to vaccinate the world and we think our [vaccine] is going to be a major contributor to that."
Hotez said because the Corbevax vaccine is cheap, has no patents and uses traditional protein-based vaccine technology it will be easier for other countries to mass-produce and distribute it.
"It's a similar technology used to make the Hepatitis B vaccine that's been made locally and all over the world for three or four decades," he said. "It really does check all of the boxes you would want for a global health vaccine."
The vaccine is currently approved for use in India to vaccinate people 18 and older. Biological E. Limited, the India-based company that partnered with the researchers at Texas Children's, has already produced 150 million doses and is scaling up to make 100 million doses a month, according to Hotez.
At the virus' peak in May, India saw more than 400,000 COVID-19 cases per day. The country has had more than 34 million cases since the beginning of the pandemic, according to New York Times tracking data, and is just 42% fully vaccinated.
Hotez said they're also working with partners in Indonesia, Bangladesh and Botswana and hope to have the vaccine available there soon.
The process to getting the vaccine fully funded stalled last year, while other projects received funding from the Trump Administration's accelerated COVID-19 vaccination program, also known as Operation Warp Speed, according to Hotez.
“The hard part for me was we had to raise money for this, because at the time, operation WARP speed couldn’t care less about a simple durable vaccine for low and middle income countries. It was all about speed and innovation,” he previously told Houston Public Media.
Despite the trouble in getting funded, Hotez said the project was able to raise around $7 million through various philanthropic groups in Houston and across Texas to help his team’s efforts.

India approves Covid vaccine developed in Texas
Starting in India, the developers are pushing for worldwide deployment of the vaccine – the recipe for which they are giving away without regard for royalty payments.
HOUSTON (CN) — India’s government Tuesday approved emergency use of a Covid-19 vaccine the Texas doctors who developed it say is ideal for people in poor countries because it can be produced cheaply and scaled up quickly for production across the globe.
Drs. Maria Elena Bottazzi and Peter Hotez, co-directors of the Center for Vaccine Development at Texas Children’s Hospital and deans of Baylor College of Medicine’s National School of Tropical Medicine in Houston, announced Tuesday the Drugs Controller General of India has granted emergency use authorization for Corbevax, a protein sub-unit vaccine.
The vaccine is the result of 10 years of research on coronavirus vaccine prototypes by a team of scientists led by Hotez and Bottazzi.
While the first Covid-19 vaccines approved in the United States, made by Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna, use engineered messenger RNA, which instruct cells how to make the spike protein on the surface of the Covid-19 virus, Corbevax is produced via a simpler process akin to the production method for the Hepatitis B vaccine.
As a protein sub-unit vaccine, Corbevax contains harmless Covid spike proteins that trigger recipients’ immune systems to create antibodies and protective white blood cells.
Baylor College of Medicine licensed the vaccine to the Indian pharmaceutical company Biological E. Limited, which ran clinical trials on more than 3,000 subjects that showed Corbevax is safe and effective against the “Ancestral-Wuhan strain” and the highly contagious delta variant, which originated in India, the developers said in a statement Tuesday.
The government of India, where 42% of the population is fully vaccinated against Covid-19, has reportedly pledged to buy 500 million doses of Corbevax and has approved it for people 18 and older.
And the developers, whose work was funded by private donors, are pushing for worldwide deployment of the unpatented vaccine – the recipe for which they are giving away without regard for royalty payments – especially in Africa, where just 13% of the population has received at least one jab of Covid vaccine.
Health officials say the slow uptake in Africa provided fertile ground for mutations and paved the way for the omicron variant, which is sending case counts spiraling around the world following its discovery in late November by scientists in South Africa.
The developers hope to soon make the vaccine available in Indonesia, Bangladesh and Botswana, Hotez told Houston's NPR affiliate.
Bottazzi said Corbevax “will fill the access gap created by the more expensive, newer vaccine technologies” that are “still not able to be quickly scaled for global production.”
Hotez, who is known for his colorful bowties, has spent the last two years giving dozens of interviews to news outlets during his time away from the lab, pressing the need for universal inoculation against Covid-19.
He said global vaccination with Corbevax would inhibit the emergence of new variants. “We have previously missed that opportunity for the alpha and delta variant. Now is our chance to prevent a new global wave from what might follow,” he added.
But any hopes Corbevax will help the world achieve herd immunity are a long way off – 4.52 billion people, only around 60% of the global population, have received a dose of Covid-19 vaccine, according to the New York Times.
The respiratory illness caused by the novel coronavirus has killed more than 5.4 million people worldwide, as reported by the Coronavirus Resource Center at Johns Hopkins University.

(Tickets Required) Join NPR's "Tell Me More" for three captivating discussions: In the first, we look at the ways innovations in education are transforming learning experiences for today’s students. Gone are the days when music class was just about listening to Mozart and math class was taught the same way to every student. For the second discussion, we hear from Shabana Basij-Rasikh, who was willing to risk her life in her native Afghanistan for an education. She would finish high school in the United States, eventually graduating from Middlebury College two years ago. Now she speaks about a school she co-founded in Afghanistan that helps young women access education at home and abroad. And finally, we address parenting your twentysomething. No shortage of articles have been written about young people in their twenties, who aren’t making enough money but are making less-than-stellar life decisions. Yet, some suggest that rather than expecting the worst from our 20-year-olds, we ought to set the bar high.

Beloit Daily News articles on this scene:
"Police confident in murder case"
"On April 2, Lak was found dead from gunshot wounds in his home at 1246 Eighth St. According to court documents, Lak was shot three times in the head and there were signs that a struggle occurred. Police received a report of shots fired, which included a description of a vehicle leaving the residence immediately following the gunfire. Officers saw the silver-green Pontiac Bonneville and tried to follow it. The car eventually crashed into a tree at the corner of Dewey and Henry avenues." (This is 6 blocks due east of my house. After work, I went off for a quick bike ride down North (usual route), and came across this scene. I grew up 2 blocks east, at 1247 Oak.)
Suspect faces counts related to slaying case
"A video from the officer's squad car was played and showed that Stewart went through a red light at the intersection of Riverside Drive and Henry Avenue. Hanaman followed the vehicle, which was going at a high speed and passing vehicles."(My wife witnessed this chase as she drove back to work after lunch on Henry Ave bridge.)
And, just because it bugs me and I love Google searches: United States Court of Appeals - "At that point a struggle broke out; Stewart drew his own gun and opened fire. Thomas retrieved the gun from Brown’s pocket and returned fire while Stewart fled. In the aftermath of the gunfight, Stewart had fled the scene, Brown lay shot at the end of the Intrepid, and Thomas, shot in his right hand and rear left shoulder..."

I live virtually next to this church and we got woken up by the girls next door saying the flames were atleast 7 storeys high, watched it for awhile on the rooftop (level 9) then went downstairs to mountain street, and after watching the roof collapse I got interviewed by Daily Telegraph and Radio 2UE.
These photos are RAW. I got to show them to Daily Telegraph and the photographer was impressed we got such a spectacular view (it's so sad):(

Sydney icon goes up in flames
By Jano Gibson and Dylan Welch
May 10, 2006 - 11:24AM
The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away.
That was the message today on the website of Sydney's historic St Barnabas Church, which was destroyed by fire early this morning.
Firefighters were called to the 148-year-old church, on the corner of Mountain Street and Broadway, about 3.30am (AEST) after the fire broke out in the building and neighbouring hall.
The UniLodge block, which houses up to 600 people behind the church, was saved because of a sprinkler system that doused the outside of the building, creating a water shield, a fire brigade spokesman told ABC Radio.
Anglican Bishop of South Sydney Robert Forsyth, who was minister of the church for 17 years, said today he was shocked to learn of the fire, but there was no doubt St Barnabas would be rebuilt.
"The attitude of the minister and elsewhere is a mixture: it's sad, but they also are defiant and hopeful," he said.
"If you believe in a resurrecting God, a church burning down is sad but it's not the end of the world."
Since the 1920s, St Barnabas has been well-known for its friendly feud with the nearby Broadway Hotel, with the two institutions trading witty messages on their prominent street-side billboards.
Smouldering shell
More than 60 firefighters, using 10 pumping appliances and three ladder trucks, fought the blaze and were able to prevent it from spreading to the UniLodge block.
The church was left a smouldering shell. Fire investigators this morning say they can't confirm yet whether it will have to be pulled down but "it's not looking good".
They said the front and rear walls - the oldest parts of the building - were unlikely to remain.
St Barnabas Church Assistant Minister Andrew Ford said it was very sad to see the building go.
"[It was] a great place for people in the community for almost 150 years."
Mr Ford said some of Sydney's oldest stained glass and one of the oldest organs had also been lost.
Mr Jurgeit said at least two people had reported hearing explosions about the same time as the church caught fire.
"There was some reports of an explosion in the church at the time we were notified of the fire. We've got a fire investigator on scene at the moment."
Once the church's walls have been stabilised, an investigation will begin into the cause of the fire.
"Fire investigators [will] go in and possibly use a K9 accelerant dog to sniff for petrols and things like that."
The fire forced the closure of all four Broadway lanes in the area but Mr Jurgeit said it would reopen by about 6.40am.
The RTA's Traffic Management Centre said motorists using Broadway would experience only minor delays this morning.
Mr Forsythe said services that would normally be held in the gutted building - including a baptism planned for this Sunday - would still go ahead at alternative locations.
He said the church was in negotiations with Moore College at Sydney University and hoped to use one of its lecture halls to hold services in the short term.
Here are some examples of the sign board battle with the nearby Broadway Hotel that appeared in the Herald's Column 8 section over the years:
- The battle of wits between the Broadway Hotel and St Barnabas Church up the road has joined in on the Christmas spirit. The church sign reads: "Wise men came to Jesus - they still do.'' To which the hotel has replied: "Wise drinkers come to Broadway - they still do.''
- The battle of the Broadway sign boards rages on. At St Barnabas Church is a sign that reads: "You have nothing that God did not give you.'' Across the road at the Broadway Hotel is another sign that reads: "I know I have nothing, but I'm not sure who gave it to me."
- Sun pun - At St Barnabas Church on Broadway, a large Easter sign outside says: "The Father did not spare his son but gave him up for us all.'' Across the road, at the Broadway Hotel, is a sign which reads: "And behold, all we have is the Mirror."
- In the election spirit, the latest message from St Barnabas Church, Broadway, reads: "God keeps his promises."

I was reading Wikipedia's articles and found this type of joint called the bridle joint.. I thought it was a cool idea to check out.. so I changed the design to use bridle joints exclusively.. well.. the lower cross bars is more like a tenon/mortise joint now.
