Benteng Somba Opu (Fort Somba Opu), Barombong, Gowa, South Sulawesi, Indonesia.
Another disappointing place to visit. I will attempt to put some words in the caption later and also post a few images of the ruin and others. A showcase that ended like a fart in a hot skillet.
--- contd. ---
The complex is in a state of disarray - poor signage, unkempt compound, and some of the so-called "cultural showcase" of "rumah adat", the traditional vernacular architecture of the houses of the various ethnic groups in Makassar are in dilapidated conditions. One fine day the poorly maintained timber buildings will kiss the ground. I also suspected some locals took advantage of the lack of surveillance of the historical site to encroach and squat in some of the houses. Young children in school uniforms playing truant while puffing away, and individuals loitering and napping under some of the stilted houses. The presence of the Gowa Discovery theme park nearby doesn't bode well to promote Somba Opu as a historical destination worthy to visit. The scenario seems unwelcome. I had a bowl of "cendul" sold by a hawker under a tree and moved away as quickly as I came. In the words of the cab driver, the place is "... tidak terawat." Justice has to be done by the relevant authorities to this important historical site!
Here's a version of the historical background. You may want to indulge the details by reading some of the blogs and articles available in the net.
The administrative center of the Gowa Kingdom at Tamalate was moved to Somba Opu during the reign of Raja Gowa XIII, Pakere Tau Tunijallo ri Passukki and a fortress was built by the successor Raja Gowa IX, Daeng Matanre Karaeng Tumapa'risi' Kallonna. The rectangular fortress was further reinforced by subsequent rulers and equipped with high caliber cannons at the bastions. The fortress, one of the many that were built was ultimately bombarded by the Dutch East India Company (VOC) and was razed to the ground during the Makassar War.
There are many versions of the historic war between the two great powers - Gowa under Raja Gowa XVI, Sultan Hasanuddin Tumenanga Ri Balla Pangkana and the VOC under the command of Admiral Cornelis Speelman. The third party that contributed to the downfall of the Gowa Kingdom was Arung Palakka, the Bugis prince whom many historians suspect was Sultan Hasanuddin’s own son. Literary texts written based on narrated oral traditions led many to believe the names mentioned, Karaeng Tunisombaya was Sultan Hasanuddin and Karaeng Andi Patunru his own son. The tension starts to build up after the royal seer, Karaeng Botolempangang identifies Karaeng Andi Panturu as the prophesized enemy and was ordered be killed. Karaeng Andi Panturu fled Gowa with his half-brother, Karaeng Patta Belo and they live in fear, but with vengeance to reclaim his dignity and honor which he has lost through his long flight. The storyteller reconciles self-vindication by foreign aggression – the Dutch; with the intended purpose to euphemize the issue of betrayal to collaboration.
The downfall of Gowa in 1669 marked the end of a successful era of the great kingdom and the beginning of total Dutch hegemony in the important trading region. Sultan Hasanuddin died in Makassar on 12 June 1670 at the age of 39 and was laid to rest at the royal mausoleum at Katangka, Sungguminasa, Gowa, Makassar.

the title is 'small articles made of wool felt,' and the book includes both wet-felted projects like bags and small needle-felted projects like dogs and sheep.
there are 25 different projects, with lovely photos (too many to post here). althought the text is entirely in japanese, there are clear instruction diagrams and pictures, both for wet- and needle- felted projects.

The Pecos River High Bridge is one of the most famous railroad bridges in the United States, where the southern transcontinental route crosses the Pecos River in western Texas. When the rail line was first completed in 1883, the railroad crossed at the "Low Bridge", close to the confluence of the Rio Grande and Pecos via a circuitous and dangerous route. A new bridge was built in 1892 several miles to the east - a much grander, longer, taller span that passed 320 feet above the river deep in the canyon below, and the third tallest bridge in the world. To help accommodate modern freight during WWII, a new "High Bridge" was constructed alongside, although not quite as tall because of the rising waters from Lake Amistad.
To those who saw my photos of the Pecos River Bridge on Flickr (here) or on Livejournal, this is a different bridge. The Pecos River Bridge I photographed earlier is where the highway crosses the Pecos River - an impressive structure in its own right. The bridge above is where the railroad crosses the river, several miles to the north.
Photo taken in April 2009 from a roadside park along Highway 90 - the highest point along the route for many miles - where a small lookout station was built decades ago to view the bridge in the far distance (it has deeply-carved graffiti dating back to the thirties). Access to the bridge is entirely on private property, so the only way to view the bridge is from about five miles away. Photo taken with high zoom, doing my best to steady the camera in the face of (literally) fifty mile per hour gusts. A view from above in Google Maps, where you can also see the 1892 alignment.

poster with a calendar grid that allows for posting of articles related to global warming. Articles are printed on reused paper. The concept is to raise awareness with changing content in one poster and to give a physical density to the message.
On display for the pleasure of the eyes at the Long Beach Peninsula Trading Post.
I call this kind of object a "leaverite," as in "leave 'er right there." With the large stain in the lower corner, is there any other choice?
If this poster's not suitable for display or fit to be considered a collectible, it still has value as a piece of Americana. You see, it commemorates a figure, Will Rogers, who was on the verge of spectacular fame a century ago.

"Remembering Will Rogers: 80 years on, how the ‘cowboy philosopher’ popularized political humor"
Nation Aug 15, 2015 12:56 PM EST
Eighty years ago [as of 2015] Saturday, William Penn Adair, better known as Will Rogers, an entertainer, humorist, political commentator and writer, died in a plane crash in Alaska.
A key backer of American aviation, Rogers was exploring Alaska with pilot Wiley Post, when their plane sputtered and stopped soon after takeoff and made a nosedive into a lagoon near Point Barrow. Both Rogers, the country’s “cowboy philosopher,” and Post, the one-eyed airman and the first pilot to fly solo around the world, died on impact. He was 55 years old.
Rogers’ weekly radio broadcast, one of the first comedic political shows, had become the most listened to program in the country on Sunday evenings by 1935.
Additionally, an estimated 40 million people read his “Daily Telegrams,” published by The New York Times and syndicated to hundreds of other newspapers throughout the U.S. and Canada. He was also the second highest grossing movie star, behind Shirley Temple.
After his death, federal and state officials ordered flags to be flown at half-staff and the New York times dedicated 13 pages to Rogers. On August 22, nearly 50,000 people went to the Forest Lawn Cemetery in Los Angeles to see Rogers’ flower-covered casket before it was transferred to the funeral chapel.
Rogers is perhaps best known for his 1931 radio broadcast “Bacon, Beans and Limousines,” in which he criticized U.S. leaders for not adequately addressing the country’s unemployed population, which was then at 7 million people.
“When he gave that speech, he was there to make America feel good and give hope,” Rogers’ great granddaughter and commissioner on the Will Rogers Memorial Commission, Jennifer Rogers-Etcheverry told PBS NewsHour.
“He was the one to say ‘people wake up,'” she said regarding his dismay over people who were starving throughout the country.
In the address, Rogers joked that the U.S. would be the “only nation in the history of the world that ever went to the poor house in an automobile.” If he were around today, Rogers-Etcheverry believe he’d change the end to be “with a cell phone,” instead of “in an automobile.”
Rogers-Etcheverry said she didn’t realize the extent of her great grandfather’s achievements until 1991, when she went with 12 other family members, including her grandfather, to New York City for the Broadway opening of “The Will Rogers Follies.”
By the age of 55, Rogers had written six books and more than 3,600 articles, according to historians at the Will Rogers Memorial Museum. He had traveled around the world three times, made 71 movies, and entered the Guinness Book of World Records for throwing three lassos at once, landing around a horse’s neck, its four legs and the horse’s rider.
He wouldn’t have been able to do any of those things, Rogers-Etcheverry mentioned, without the support of his wife and manager, Betty Blake Rogers. The two had four children. The youngest died shortly before his second birthday.
Born in 1879 to an affluent and influential Cherokee Nation family in Oologah, Oklahoma, Rogers picked up the roping skills he used later in his “Ziegfeld Follies” vaudeville act, while working on his father’s ranch.
In the beginning, his quick wit–served with a smile–was used in jokes about his ropes. However, it didn’t take long for him to turn his humor toward American society, politics, and events like World War I, Prohibition and the Great Depression.
In 1926, Rogers embarked on a “Badwill Tour,” his spoof on the goodwill tours of politicians at the time. During the tour he said, “I have never met a man I didn’t like,” in reference to Marxist revolutionary Leon Trotsky, whom Rogers tried to meet while visiting the former Soviet Union, but he never got the chance.

The quote, one of his most famous, appeared first in the November 6, 1926-edition of the Saturday Evening Post. The sentiment became a popular adage used by him and others when referring to politicians and world dignitaries who held unpopular beliefs.
Rogers often found material for his radio broadcasts and newspaper columns by observing Congress. He poked fun at those on both sides of the aisle and also had the ear President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
“Most people and actors appearing on the stage have some writer write their material. I don’t do that. Congress is good enough for me. They have been writing my material for years.”
He wasn’t simply the voice of the American conscience. In 1931, Rogers traveled 15,000 miles and raised $220,000, as part of the Red Cross relief tour of drought-stricken areas in Arkansas and his home state of Oklahoma.
Today, schools, highways, an airport and a shrine to the sun in Colorado Springs, Colorado, are named after Rogers.
Every year to mark the anniversary of Rogers’ death, more than 100 planes fly into a grass landing strip near his childhood home.

One of the articles talking about one of the planes landing on the mall property.
Built on the 136 Acre Hillview Golf Course in the 70s. At the time that it was completed, Eastridge was, not sure if it still is, the largest indoor shopping mall in the West.
Not all was perfect with the building though, the mall itself is fine, the problems then and to this day lay with the Reid-Hillview Airport (not commercial airliners, rather small planes) across the street, the concern, well statement made by the airport was that planes were going to land on the mall property. Sure enough, it happened time and again, in the parking lots, on the mall itself and on the roof of the Penney's store.

Reasons Why I Use Lightroom
When I really started to get into photography, I was using a Windows based machine and the only option, that I knew of at the time, for organizing and editing photos was Lightroom. I originally started with Lightroom 3 and have since followed the upgrade path through 4 and now I’m using Lightroom 5.
During the past several months I have moved my photo editing to a Mac and to this day I still insist on using the combination of Lightroom and Photoshop. I know that there are several Apple products that can do what I want, but I like what I’m used to, I’m getting old and I don’t want to change.
That being said, I’m going to dive into several of the reasons why I continue to use Lightroom.
Non-Destructive Editing
Non-destructive editing is the number one reason why I started using Lightroom. Simply put, non-destructive editing is the editing of an image that does not physically change the original image stored on your drive.
As you change the appearance of an image in Lightroom, you are only creating a simulation of what you want the image to look like. In reality the original file is not being touched. In the background of the program, Lightroom is storing the information about how you want your image to look and keeps a record of how that image should look, and renders that information back to that image every time you view it.
The nice thing about this is that years after you originally edited an image, you can actually go back and click the reset button and your image is back to the way it looked when it first came out of your camera. If you decide that you actually want to keep the way that image looks, but would like to create a copy and “start over” with the editing, you can create a virtual copy of that image, click the reset button.
Collections
Collections are a way of organizing your images within Lightroom. Even though your images are stored in some manor on your hard drive, (I organize my images based on date, starting with Year, Month, and Day folders), Lightroom allows you to take images and organize them any way you want.
Some of the collections that I have include:
Working–Images that I am currently in different phases of editing
Completed– Images that I am done editing and ready to be posted online at some point in the future
Posted Online — Images that I have posted online at some point in the past
Waterfalls — Images that I have posted online that are strictly waterfall images
Smoky Mountains — Images that I have posted online that are strictly from The Great Smoky Mountain National Park
Those are just a few examples of the collections that I have created. This allows me to quickly pull up old images that I have published of waterfalls. Since there are waterfalls in the Smokies, those images also will appear in the Smoky Mountian collection.
Collections allows me the organization that I want or need within Lightroom, without having to make copies of those images and putting them in different locations on my hard drive, taking up valuable space.
Publishing Tools
There are many good plugins that can be used with Lightroom and the few that I use are from Jeffrey Friedl’s Blog. These plugins include Export tools for SmugMug, Flickr, PicasaWeb (aka Google+) and Facebook.
Using these tools, I can create one click export options for the places that I post my images. This way I don’t have to export an image to my hard drive, and then manually post that image all over the web. I have the ability to quickly post to different services without much hassle.
Maps Module
I will admit I don’t use this feature as often as I should, or want for that matter. But the mapping tool that was introduced in Lightroom 4, is just awesome. If you have a camera that automatically creates GPS coordinates, this tool is even awesomer. Clicking on the Maps module shows you a Google Map of where your images were taken. Depending on your zoom location, the images will be grouped in “pins”. As you zoom in, those pins start to break up in to many different pins and the images shot at a particular coordinate are all grouped together.
If your camera does not capture GPS coordinates, you can manually move your images to the place on the map where it was taken and Lightroom will then add the coordinate to your photos metadata. This comes in handy when you are exporting to Flickr and you want your images to appear on Flickr’s map. You won’t have to manually do that anymore, because Lightroom has done it for you. Plus, do it in Lightroom is much quicker and can be done in batches.
No one has specifically asked me why do I use one product over another, but I figured I would give you a glimpse into my little editing world and reflect on some of the reasons why I use the tools that I do.
Should you have any questions about Lightroom or photography in general, leave a comment and ask me. Maybe I’ll take your question and make a post about it so others can learn from your questions.

Many articles of personal gold adornment that were made during the California Gold Rush incorporated "in situ" "gold in quartz" gemstones. Such articles, eg., cane tops, cutlery, desktop aritcles, were often either inlaid with custom cut pieces of this material or featured standard flat-topped cabochons such as this one. Unfortunately, (a little) this piece has two cracks....but I'm sure I'll not look this good when I'm as old as it is.

Week 10 At the Window ( 796 – 800 ) 799
Vilhelm Hammershøi Danish, Copenhagen 1864-1916 Copenhagen
Self Portrait , 1911
Oil on convas
Hammershøi undertook this self portrait in the summer home that he rented just north of Copenhagen in 1911, when he was forty-seven years old. He appears at work, left hand raised, as he would see himself in a mirror. Behind him are two signature motifs, a sunlit door and window, attesting to his fascination with architecture and light. The revised contours of the figure and the purplish cast to the face indicate that Hammershøi left the composition unfinished, but his wife Ida, kept the picture until her death, and it remained with her family until the present day. A closely related painting is in the Statens Museum for Kunst, Copenhagen.

When I was a young boy
I was honest and I had more self control
If I was tempted I would run
Then when I got older I began to lie
to get exactly what I wanted when I wanted it
And I wanted it
Now I'm having trouble differentiating between
what I want and what I need to make me happy
So instead of thinking I just act before I have a chance to contemplate the consequence of action
And I will turn off
And I will shut down
Burying the voices of my conscience hitting ground
And I will turn off
And I will shut down
The chemicals are restless in my head
Cause I lie
Not because I want to
But I seem to need to all the time (need to all the time)
Yeah I lie
And I don't even know it
Maybe this is all a part of my

that song has been a mainstay in my listening experience for the past month or so...the first half of the song is exactly where I am right now. the entire thing is perfect. it will definitely go on to define this period of my life. (or, actually, the song defines the first month and a half of 2010...I have no doubt that Ana's Song (Open Fire) by Silverchair will define this next period of my life, as I've been listening to it non stop for a week or so)
