My photo adventure yesterday involved driving twenty miles (approximately 32 km) along Mulholland Highway from the Paramount Ranch near my home through the rugged Santa Monica Mountains to the Pacific Ocean. If you look at a Google satellite map of the Malibu, California area you will get an idea of what the terrain and drive can be like. Mulholland Highway is a snakelike road and has its share of really sharp hairpin turns, continuous "S" curves" and numerous rises and drops of elevation along the route. You drive through some gorgeous countryside while seeing almost no cars (even so it took me an hour and a half to make the trip one-way). This is so close to large populated metropolitan areas yet some areas of the Santa Monica Mountains feel remote. There are some pockets of populated areas and some beautiful ranch lands along the route.
Zoom in on the satellite image and the dishes are clearly visible. This array of three large satellite dishes (at least that's what I think they are) is visible from quite a distance away as you are driving down the steep canyon. This little pull out was the only place I found to stop to get a view and take a few photographs. There is a road that leads directly to these dishes but I'm not certain if its accessible to the general public. I'd like to get closer look sometime. I'm a 'space buff' and I remember a larger array of radio telescope dishes in the Jodie Foster movie "Contact". I believe that array is in New Mexico near White Sands or Los Alamos (I urge you to view Pete Tuner's marvelous images of the New Mexico Large Array in the December 2003 edition of Harper's Magazine if you want to see how beautifully they can be photographed).

The Antenna Assembly Building was used to assemble the radio telescopes when the system was constructed. Now, it's used for maintenance and upgrade of the individual radio telescopes. Normally, 27 radio telescopes are in service, while an extra one is in this building being maintained or upgraded.
The Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) is a radio astronomy observatory located about 50 miles (64 km) west of Socorro, New Mexico. The VLA consists of twenty-seven 25-meter (82 feet) diameter radio telescopes deployed in a Y-shaped array, together with all the equipment needed to process the collected data and function as an interferometer. Each of the radio telescopes is mounted along double parallel railroad tracks, which allows changing the configuration of the system. Placing the radio telescopes closer together increases surface brightness sensitivity. Spreading them out increases angular resolution. The system was built from 1973 to 1980 and is being modernized, starting in 2011.
n Taiwan's traditional society, major religious pilgrimages usually center on religious figures called Infernal Generals who walk in choreographed groups called arrays. Many people who encounter these Infernal Generals on the street are wary of them because of their elaborate costumes and gaudily painted faces, which is a pity: in doing so they miss an opportunity to admire the folk artistry behind the performances. In fact, these Infernal Generals not only symbolize the religious beliefs of the people, they also reveal the cultural and historical background of their ancestors.
There are many tales regarding the origin of the Infernal Generals. Some scholars believe that they have close ties to the "Five Deities of Plague Control". As residents of Fujian tell it, the Infernal Generals are the bodyguards or lieutenant generals for the Five Deities of Plague Control who sweep away plagues troubling local residents. The five deities were once students before they were designated deities by the Jade Emperor - the ultimate God figure in Chinese culture. One night these students observed that the devil of plague was trying to poison the water in a well so that local residents who drank it would be poisoned. They sacrificed their own lives by jumping into the well to warn local residents that the water was poisoned. The Jade Emperor acknowledged their sacrifices and kindness in helping the people, by designating them the Five Deities of Plague Control. Since that time one of the most controversial of all folk tales has been the story that the Infernal Generals were sent by the Jade Emperor to assist the Five Deities of Plague Control in getting rid of plagues among the civilian population.
Another version holds that the Infernal Generals had been bandits before they became religious figures. Chenghuang, the god of cities and castles, forced them to turn over a new leaf and become his right-hand men. At the same time, in some provinces of China many people believe that the Infernal Generals are the religious figures of ancient policemen who are now worshipped as ambassadors from the underworld. In fact, many academic sources can be found to support this tale.
There are eight members of the Infernal Generals, including Gan, Liou, Fan, and Hsieh as the four generals and Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter as four seasonal gods. Currently, however, many arrays featuring the Infernal Generals are formed of 4, 6, 8, 10 or even 12 figures, highly inconsistent with the original tales of the "eight generals". This usually happens when the organizers of a pilgrimage recruit too many or too few people to pose as the Infernal Generals.
Regardless of how many people may be recruited, the arrays of Infernal Generals must follow certain structures. To begin with, they must wear helmets and robes, and they keep one arm raised above the shoulder and the other folded next to the armpit at all times. Footwear calls for straw sandals with bells attached. In addition, the arm that is raised above the shoulder holds a fan (which may be black, white, red or a mixture of flowery colors) while the other holds a religious instrument. Finally, they make up their faces in keeping with traditional symbolism and ceremonial rules. In fact, putting on make up is the first of many steps in getting ready for a performance.
Once the make-up has been applied, actors playing the Infernal Generals are not allowed to eat meat or to talk to anyone. According to ceremonial rules, any actor who breaks this rule is subject to punishment from the gods. When show time arrives, the actors all stand in an array to mark the beginning of the performance. The actors shake their heads, stare with their eyes and swing their bodies wildly as they walk, maintaining a respectable and powerful attitude throughout the whole process. In addition, the Infernal Generals cannot allow anyone other than crewmembers to get close to them, which is another way they command respect from those around them.
The cards are laid out 5 down and 6 across, matching the 30 labels on an address sheet. Each card gets an appropriate address label and a postage stamp. There are a half-dozen different stamp designs.

DAY 2 of the Formula Ford 50th Anniversary Race Weekend and after a Really Fast Action Packed array of Cars in both Mazda and Formula Ford Racing and Qualifying on Saturday it was time for Sunday and to find out who would be Crowned the Formula Ford Champion of 2021.
AMOC GT / GT4 & Intermarque (Qualifying)
First up on the Sunday for Qualifying was The AMOC GT/GT4 Championship and with a Grid of Just 5 Cars for this One its going to be Very Interesting to see out of the 5 Drivers who Can set the Quickest Pace During Qualifying. Lets Find Out who took Pole and the Fastest Lap.
In First Place taking Pole Position and the Fastest Lap was the Duo Pair of Rikki Cann and Samuel Wilson) in their Aston Martin V8 Vantage with a Best Lap Time of 1:00.791 and a Top Speed of 71.53mph. Fantastic Work both Ricky and Rob Really Pushing the Aston Martin Hard and Gunning fort that All Important Victory come the First Race.
In Second Place was (Jamie Sturges) in his VW Golf TCR with a Best Lap Time of 1:03.245 and a Top Speed of 68.75mph. Amazing Work there Jamie Pushing that Golf and Racing it Like a Pro.
In Third Place was the Duo of (Whit and Fenn) in their Lotus Elise Motorsport with a Best Lap Time of 1:04.089 and a Top Speed of 67.85mph. Great Work there Whit and Fenn Fantastic Driving and Great Team Work.
Three Very Quick and Capable Cars in the Hands of Some Very Competitive Drivers will make for a Really Fantastic Race. With all three Cars Having Different Power Outputs it will be Interesting to see what Techniques Each of them will use to their Advantage Come the First Race.

In First Place Taking the Victory was (Rikki Cann) in his Aston Martin V8 Vantage with a Best Lap Time of 58.194 and an Average Speed of 73.41mph. Amazing Job there Ricky Really Working Hard Behind the Wheel to Keep that Aston in the Lead Thought the Entire Race with some Beautifully Controlled Driving as well.
In Second Place was (Andy Thompson) in his Seat Toledo with a Best Lap Time of 57.893 and an Average Speed of 73.35mph. Incredible Drive there Andy Really Well Done and Making sure to hold onto that All Important Second Place.
In Third Place was (Paul Whight) in his Lotus Elise Motorsport with a Best Lap Time of 57.284 and an Average Speed of 72.75mph. Superb Drive from Paul Really Looked like he was Enjoying that Drive and Kept Pushing Hard the Whole Way around the Race Track. His Smooth Driving Through Clearways was Amazing to see.

In First Place taking the Final Win of the Day for AMOC GT was (Rob Fenn) in his Lotus Elise Motorsport) with a Best Lap Time of 50.083 and an Average Speed of 83.82mph. Congratulations Rob what a Drive and What a Car Fantastic Work.
In Second Place was (Samuel Wilson) in his Aston Martin V8 Vantage with a Best Lap Time of 51.459 and an Average Speed of 80.50mph. Amazing Driving there Samuel Keeping Close to Rob on Many Occasions around the Circuit and a Cracking Overtake on Rob through Clearways.
In Third Place was (Julian Reddyhough) in his Aston Martin Vantage with a Best Lap Time of 59.552 and an Average Speed of 71.18mph. Super Driving From Julian Smooth through the Corners and Making sure to Hang onto that Third Place During the Entirety of the Race.

In First Place taking the Victory was (Brian Trott) in his Mazda MX5 MK1 with a Best Lap Time of 58.179 and an Average Speed of 73.82mph. Super Work there Brain Racing Against another 34 Competitors in Identical Cars and Winning takes Incredible Driver Skill and Talent and you Really Showed that During the Race. Congratulations.
In Second Place was (Oliver Allwood) in his Mazda MX5 MK1 with a Best Lap Time of 57.532 and an Average Speed of 73.81mph. Well Done Oliver Fantastic Driving and a Really Great Defence of Second Place thought the entire Race.

The Mazda MX5 Super Cup Championship was next Up and after A Whole Day of Qualifying and Qualifying Second Fastest on Saturday it was time to see what Each of the Drivers could do and How they would use their Style and Race Craft to Gain a Victory. With Another Large Grid of 30 Cars Anything Can Happen and Racing always has its Moments of Unpredictability.
In First Place taking the Victory was (Declan Lee) in his Mazda MX5 MK3 with a Best Lap Time of 1:07.272 and an Average Speed of 45.71mph. In First Place Taking the Grand Final Championship Crown is (Jamie Sharp) in his Medina Sport JL17 with a Best Lap Time of 50.918 and an Average Speed of 66.77mph. Congratulations Jamie a Truly Champion Like Drive to Secure The Title of 2021 Formula Ford Grand Final Champion and Some Brilliant Drives all Season for a Well Deserved Victory in Formula Ford.
In Second Place was (Maxwell Esterson) in his Ray GR18 with a Best Lap Time of 51.116 and an Average Speed of 66.76mph. A Truly Competitive Drive there Maxwell Second in The Championship Standings and Something to be Very Proud of Phenomenal Driving.
In Third Place was (Andre Castro) in his Ray GR15 with a Best Lap Time of 51.137 and an Average Speed of 66.73mph. Superb Driving there Andre with P3 in the Standings and a Well Deserved Place in Formula Ford History.
Jamie Sharp is The New 2021 Formula Ford Grand Final Champion After a Heroic Battle Thought the Season He has Emerged Victorious.
