"The Archives." Huntsville-Madison County Public Library, Heritage Room Archives. Huntsville, Alabama. 17 Sep 2008.
It was a profound joy for me when the archivist at the library took me back into the archives for the first time ever. These wonderful paintings lined the walls; stacks of records, photographs, and books stood behind me. I could have gotten lost in there for hours.

Dr. Richard E. Yates (professor of history) and "The Apparition from Appomattox" during a lesson on the Civil War, circa 1964.
This photo was used on page 39 of the 1964 Troubadour with the caption, "Nothing can beat a genuine Confederate soldier for giving a Civil War course a realistic touch. 'The Apparation from Appomattox' points ruefully at Richmond while Dr. Yates consoles him with Fort Sumter."

"The Recorder of the Archives" ca. 1935 (detail)
Design by James Earl Fraser
Modeled by Laura G. Fraser
Carved by the John Donnelly Company
Fraser’s "Recorder of the Archives" is an allegorical treatment of the archival process. In it, a male figure sits upon a throne holding the keys to the Archives. He accepts and catalogs the nation's most precious documents in a large book that rests on his lap. The throne rests upon recumbent rams, which symbolize parchment. Figures nearby accept important documents for cataloging, while other groups gather less significant ones. Winged horses symbolizing inspiration stand in the background, and groups of dogs, symbols of guardianship, are at either end of the pediment.

(Now that I'm pretty much constantly armed with better and even more unsual cameras -- the Lomo toys that I'm beginning to play with! -- I look forward to the next discarded/abandoned find! =)
Murumbi had a vast art collection from all over Africa. He died before his wife, and his wife died without a will, so apparently there are whole shipping crates of priceless art in holding at the Nairobi airport. The British family of his wife claims them and wants to export them, and the Kenyan govt and people are trying to keep them in Kenya.
