The St Nicholas Orthodox Cathedral, Nice (French: Cathédrale Orthodoxe Saint-Nicolas de Nice, Russian: Николаевский собор, Ницца) is an Eastern Orthodox cathedral located in the French city of Nice. It is recognized as a national monument of France, and it currently belongs to the jurisdiction of the Moscow Patriarchate. It is the largest Eastern Orthodox cathedral in Western Europe.

The cathedral was opened in 1912, thanks to the generosity of Russia's Tsar Nicholas II.

Beginning in the mid-19th century, Russian nobility visited Nice and the French Riviera, following the fashion established decades earlier by the English upper class and nobility. In 1864, immediately after the railway reached Nice, Tsar Alexander II visited by train and was attracted by the pleasant climate. Thus began an association between Russians and the French Riviera that continues to this day.

The cathedral, consecrated in December 1912 in memory of Nicholas Alexandrovich, Tsarevich of Russia, who died in Nice, was meant to serve the large Russian community that had settled in Nice by the end of the 19th century, as well as devout visitors from the Imperial Court. Tsar Nicholas II funded the construction work.

After 1917, Communist persecution of religion in Russia led some Russian Orthodox dioceses abroad to form jurisdictions not affiliated with Moscow. One of these, the Paris-based exarchate, later assumed control of the Nice cathedral.

On 20 January 2010, a French Court (the Tribunal of First Instance at Nice) ruled that the title to the Cathedral should be held by the Russian state. [Wikipédia]

A bright spring morning in Helsinki.

The sun hits the cathedral, and below it — a word that says it all.

I love shooting mundane subjects.

So even for architecture details, I choose a plain wall of a building. :o)

The Cathedral of San Vigilio – the Duomo di Trento - was erected on an area which housed an ancient temple dedicated to the city's Patron Saint. A church built in the Padania style was probably found here before the death of the Saint. In the 11th century, the Prince-Bishop Uldarico II began works on the cathedral. In 1212 this first building was almost completely demolished by Federico Vanga - one of the Bishops who contributed the most to the city's urban-artistic development - to make room for a cathedral in the Romanesque-Lombard style. The Bishop entrusted the project to a team of Campione-based skilled workers, headed by Adamo d'Arogno. At the end of the 13th century, the cathedral's Northern transept was decorated with an allegorical rose window known as the Wheel of Fortune. In the 14th century, the church got expanded, and Gothic features were added to it. In 1628, the Crucifix Chapel was planned by Giuseppe Alberti. Built in the Baroque style, it houses a group of wooden sculptures at whose feet the decrees of the Council of Trent (1545-1563) were issued.

The Synagogue of Santa María la Blanca (literally Synagogue of Saint Mary the White, originally known as the Ibn Shushan Synagogue, or commonly the Congregational Synagogue of Toledo) is a museum and former synagogue in Toledo, Spain. Erected in 1180, according to an inscription on a beam, it is disputably considered the oldest synagogue building in Europe still standing. It is now owned and preserved by the Catholic Church.

Its stylistic and cultural classification is unique among surviving buildings as it was constructed under the Christian Kingdom of Castile by Islamic architects for Jewish use. It is considered a symbol of the cooperation that existed among the three cultures that populated the Iberian Peninsula during the Middle Ages.

Looking down into my hotel atrium (Hyatt Regency, Atlanta) from the 36th floor. The yellow and orange are carpets on every floor, blue is walls (probably not really blue, but lighting makes them appear so), and black lines are an iron railing that sticks out perpendicularly from every floor. Even knowing all that, I still have trouble figuring out the optical illusion. "Even Higher Ground" - Monthly Scavenger Hunt.
