The small row of windows on the top floor brings light to the 68 cells on San Quentin's original death row . Today, there are so many condemned inmates, nearly 700, that they are housed in various units throughout the prison. This original setting is inhabited by those who have earned the privilege...the pipes sticking up on the left side next to the tower is the exhaust pipe for the gas chamber located directly below the pipes...as prisoner E-Z Williams wrote, "low flying gulls beware"...the screened in area on the roof is the exercise yard for the dead men walking

London Bridge Underground Station, London, England

One from last year that I found whilst sorting out my images. When I took this image this was the look that I was going for but I am not sure why its taken me so long to do it? You just find that sometimes your images just got lost within all your other images once you start building up a substantial collection of images.

I really like the high key feel that some stations allow you to do. Its odd that some stations do work with a high key feel and others don't even though you think that they should.

I have not been out with the camera lately to get new material due to other commitments but hopefully in the next week or so I will hopefully get some new material and try out few new things, also the fact that its been too hot down on the tube lately has put me off.

I have also updated my website so feel free to have a look around at

Information

The Underground station is between Borough and Bank on the Northern Line, and between Southwark and Bermondsey on the Jubilee Line. The station is the sixth busiest on the Underground network and is the only station on the London Underground network with 'London' in its name (while the NR termini are named, for instance 'London Waterloo' the Underground station is simply named 'Waterloo').

Originally Northern Line trains ran to a terminus at King William Street bypassing London Bridge, but the construction of a new station at Bank to provide greater capacity and allow northward extension required a new tunnel alignment, and provided the opportunity for a station at London Bridge. The station entrance was originally at Three Castles House on the corner of London Bridge Street and Railway Approach, but has since been moved to Borough High Street and Tooley Street. The original entrance remained standing until March 2013 when it was demolished.

The Northern Line platforms were rebuilt during the late 1990s to increase the platform and circulation areas in preparation for the opening of the Jubilee Line.

The Northern Line station opened on 25 February 1900 as part of the City & South London Railway's (C&SLR's) revised route from Borough to Bank and Moorgate. The Jubilee Line station opened on 7 October 1999[33] as part of the Jubilee Line Extension, although trains had been running through non-stop from the previous month. To enable the Jubilee Line to be constructed, months of major engineering works to relocate buried services in the surrounding streets had to be undertaken. A new ticket hall was created in the arches under the main-line station, providing improved interchange. During excavations a variety of Roman remains were found, including pottery and fragments of mosaics; some of these are now on display in the station. The Jubilee Line platforms have been fitted with platform edge doors in common with all other stations on the extension.

There are two platforms on each line and two main sets of escalators to and from the Tooley Street ticket hall. All four platforms are directly accessible from the Borough High Street entrance/exit.

La Merenda

Built in a former woodworking shop (need to find out more about that), La Merenda is primarily a restaurant, but is known for it's happy hour. While I was shooting here, someone walked by and said that they often start here to warm up for a night of bar hopping.

"Stately Arches." These beautiful arches were photographed in the National Palace in Mexico City. This building is conisidered an architectural 'must see' for visitors to the City. (this image will also be found in my Album: "Favorite B&W Photographs Series.")

Harbor Room

Built as it is now in 1907 by the Miller Brewing Co., then sold to the Joseph Schlitz Brewing Co. in 1915, it has been through multiple iterations of bar/tavern and restaurant. The last permit work on the building, an "Electrical Permit Application" in 2002 actually listed the property use as a "gay bar".

Now lit up at night, and with a reasonable patio, it is a hangout and meeting place for the most "manly" of men.
