Lawson’s Pond, located in Northern Berkeley County, near Eutawville, is a beautifully preserved 19th century plantation home. Historically a cotton plantation, the house was thought to have been built in preparation for the marriage between Charles Cordes Porcher and Rebecca C. Marion, in 1823.
The style of the house is typical of other houses found in the Upper St. John’s Berkeley Parish. These homes were typically four rooms downstairs, with two front doors, each of which opens onto a principal room. often a living room and dining room. The rear two rooms were divided by a stairwell. Upstairs, four bedrooms were divided by a central hallway.
The house at Lawson’s Pond remains unique as the exterior, constructed of Black Cypress, has never seen a coat of paint since it was built. The only exception is the rear of the home has one coat of paint applied today, but nowhere else. The carvings of the home are exceptionally detailed and intricate. The proportions of the rooms are elegant and conducive for entertaining. The front rooms have wood painted like marble on the fireplace, wainscoting, doors and baseboards.
The house sits atop a seven foot foundation, with thirteen steps leading to an L-shaped front porch which covers the front and side of the home. Ceiling heights on the first floor are 14 feet and 12 feet on the second.
Thomas Waterman, who compiled a list of important structures during the Santee Cooper Hydroelectroc Project, was quoted as saying that “the only house in the area which approaches The Rocks (another local plantation, now lost) in architectural importance is Lawson’s Pond.”
It is important to note that all of the woodwork you see, every intricate piece and detail, was done completely by hand, most likely using slave labor. Skilled craftsmen, possibly one person, created each and every piece with such precision and detail, it would be almost impossible to replicate. Other homes in the area had similar woodwork, Springfield being the most elaborate. Two upstairs rooms were never completed. On the exterior of the home, there is a window and side door that have a different portion of wood at the cornice, which shows they were never completed as well.
The house remains a private residence and is not open to the public without prior permission.

George Barnsley and Sons Ltd was founded in 1836 and specialised in forge filing and cutting tools for leather workers and shoe makers. One George Barnsley was Master Cutler in 1883.
George Barnsley and Son is listed in the 1837 Sheffield directory as a file manufacture situated on Wheeldon Street, The 1849 listing records a move to Cornhill and then in 1852 to Cornish works Cornish street. They had by this time also increased their product range to include steel files and shoe & butchers knives. They are again listed in 1944 as manufactures of files and blades, shoe knives and leather workers tools.
In the 1948 listing the business had become George Barnsley and Son Ltd.
