Taken in August 2014. There are three churches of different Christian faiths around the gate and this shrine above it which is a site for religious pilgrimage (the sacred miraculous painting of the Virgin Mary which adorns the gate can be seen and it is customary to make the sign of the cross when passing through). A difficult subject because of its position and I have done my best with it.

Best if you press L to view in Flickr's Lightbox and F11 to remove the toolbars.

The Old Summer Palace, known in China as Yuan Ming Yuan (the Gardens of Perfect Brightness), and originally called the Imperial Gardens, was a complex of palaces and gardens in Beijing. It is located 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) northwest of the walls of the Imperial City, built in the 18th and early 19th century, where the emperors of the Qing Dynasty resided and handled government affairs (the Forbidden City was used for formal ceremonies).

Known for its extensive collection of garden and building architectures and other works of art (a popular name in China was the "Garden of Gardens", simplified Chinese: 万园之园; traditional Chinese: 萬園之園; pinyin: wàn yuán zhī yuán), the Imperial Gardens were destroyed by British and French troops in 1860 during the Second Opium War. Today, the destruction of the Gardens of Perfect Brightness is still regarded as a symbol of foreign aggression and humiliation in China.

The Old Summer Palace is located just outside the west gate of Tsinghua University, north of Peking University, and east of the Summer Palace.

Initial construction began in 1707, during the reign of the Kangxi emperor and was on a much smaller scale. It was intended as a gift for the emperor's fourth son, later Emperor Yongzheng. In 1725, under the Yongzheng emperor, the Imperial Gardens were greatly expanded. Yongzheng introduced the waterworks of the gardens which created some of the lakes, streams and ponds which greatly complemented the rolling hills and grounds. Yongzheng also named 28 scenic spots within the garden.

By the Qianlong emperor's reign, the second expansion was well underway. Qianlong personally took interest and directed the expansion works. Qianlong also increased the number of scenic spots in the gardens to 50. By the middle of the 19th century, the Imperial Gardens had undergone expansion in one form or another for over 150 years.

Overview of the site:

The Imperial Gardens were made up of three gardens: the Garden of Perfect Brightness proper, the Garden of Eternal Spring (simplified Chinese: 长春园; traditional Chinese: 長春園; pinyin: Chángchūn Yuán), and the Elegant Spring Garden (simplified Chinese: 绮春园; traditional Chinese: 綺春園; pinyin: Qǐchūn Yuán); together they covered an area of 3.5 square kilometres (860 acres). They were almost 5 times the size of the Forbidden City, and 8 times the size of the Vatican City.

On the grounds stood hundreds of structures such as halls, pavilions, temples, galleries, gardens, lakes, etc. Several famous landscapes of southern China had been reproduced in the Imperial Gardens, hundreds of masterpieces of Chinese art and antiquities were stored in the halls, making the Imperial Gardens one of the largest collections in the world. Some unique copies of literary work and compilations were also stored inside the Imperial Gardens.

The Old Summer Palace is often associated with the European-style palaces (Xi Yang Lou) built of stone. The designers of these structures, the Jesuits Giuseppe Castiglione and Michel Benoist, were employed by the Qianlong emperor to satisfy his taste for exotic buildings and objects. Sometimes, visitors unfamiliar with the former layout of the Old Summer Palace are misled to believe that it consisted primarily of European-style palaces.

In fact, the area of the Imperial Gardens at the back of the Eternal Spring garden where the European-style buildings were located was small compared to the overall area of the gardens. More than 95% of the Imperial Gardens were made up of essentially Chinese-style buildings. There were also a few buildings in Tibetan and Mongol styles, reflecting the diversity of the Qing Empire.

Occupied on April 24th 1916. Patrick Pearse read the Proclamation of the Republic outside the GPO.

While walking around the city of St. Augustine, FL., I found this Baptist Church a few blocks from the historic area. I loved the architecture and style of the building. It reminded me of an old school house. Finished in LRCC and On1...

I went to school here in the 1980's when it was called the Christian Athenaeum/ van Lingen College. It's architect, Evert Jan Rothuizen (1888-1979) apparently changed his name in 1929 from Rothuizen (which translates literally to Rotten Houses) to Rotshuizen (Rock-Houses).

Makes sense, doesn't it?

wikipedia: Tokyo Tower (東京タワー, Tōkyō-tawā) is a communications tower located in Shiba Park, Minato, Tokyo, Japan. The 332.6-meter-tall (1,091 ft) orange and white lattice tower is the tallest self-supporting steel structure in the world, the tallest artificial structure in Japan and the 11th tallest tower in the world.

Built in 1958, this Eiffel Tower-like structure supports an antenna that broadcasts television and radio signals for important Japanese media outlets such as NHK, TBS and Fuji TV. In recent years, the tower has also been instrumental in Japan's push to switch from an analog signal to digital signal.

The tower is constructed of steel, a third of which was from recycled World War II scrap steel. Despite being 8.6 meters taller than the Eiffel Tower (32.6 if the tower's TV antenna is included), Tokyo Tower only weighs about 4,000 tons, 3,300 tons less than the Eiffel Tower.

Tablet made in the studio of sculptors Pierre van den Bossche and Willem Crevels, which was around the corner, at Lutmastraat 271.

This house dates from 1890 and was designed by Eduard Cuypers (1859-1927). It is part of an architectural unit of four houses, as a whole symmetrical and with another tablet at nr. 75, to be seen here.

To the left is Amsteldijk 79, also designed by Eduard Cuypers.

Update, 17 June 2012: the four houses at Amsteldijk 75-78 were designated municipal heritage on 22 May 2012.

Tricky HDR due to movement of 5 x 30s exposures. So had to repair quite a lot of branch movement in post. I was trying for a more natural look than recent HDRs from me, and I think this looks plausible.
