Another take on Thomas Schütte’s 'Model for a Hotel 2007' that occupies the fourth plinth at Trafalgar Square. This one has had the exposure tweaked a touch to create the appearance of the white stripes but otherwise this is what it looked light in the sporadic sun of yesterday.
The structure is an architectural model of a twenty-one storey building, constructed in specially engineered red, yellow and blue glass. It is over 8 tonnes in weight and about 5 metres tall.

Inspiration for this piece came from the storybook cottages and shops of Carmel Ca. In particular, the concept for this unit came from a structure known as Hansel Cottage. Hundreds of handcrafted stones, bricks, and leaves were used to complete the structure. The stones, and wood grained front door have been meticulously faux painted. The roofline. exterior wall skirt, chimney pot, door, roof and bay roof all contain smooth arching lines which are central to the theme of this unit. Dimensions are 21" x 16" x 21". Modell Kirche Kavelstorf
Dorfkirche Kavelstorf
Bemerkenswert ist die Dorfkirche aus dem 13. Jahrhundert.

1/2" Scale miniature, shot up on a hill against natural sky & distant landscape. White bounceboard for shadow fill, no flash. Almost 2' tall, wood construction, cast resin details, and polyester resin for stucco like textures. This was a piece for a private collector.
These scale models are also ideal for G-scale garden railroads, part of a European Village.

..architecture studies ;)
This might become a case of tl;dr, but if so, don't ask me what it is ;)
Normally when we do photography, we "find" our subjects. Or they are "given", or presented to us. Not so often do we create them. Photographing architects are among those who have that rare pleasure.. But even then the subjects are usually made for an entirely different purpose and the photos are just representations of them. In the previous semester in my architecture studies, I had the rare pleasure of exploring photography as a tool in itself. to -not take- but actually create photographs that was just that -images. This was done in combination with physical models in cardboard, plastic and similar. Sometimes the model served the photo, other times the opposite.
The course I participated in was called Studio B3, a highly abstract, experimental, pedagogic and philosophic course. The main aim is for the students to explore their own creative process -to discover where the ideas come from and how to develop them. To kickstart this they usually have a main theme; in later years a series called "The New Collective"; a search for a new relationship between architecture, nature and culture, through one specific subject -this time; Garden, previously; network, market, scene, dwelling, workplace etc..
So what are these images? They are photos from some of the 15 physical models I made only for the sake of translating the vague images in my head into a format I could communicate. Some of the photos are just representations of the models, but which I enjoy as photos nonetheless. Most of them however, are as close as I could come to the images that intuitively emerged from my imagination when discussing "garden" in a wider sense.

For some reason the precision Swiss Tessina 35 camera inspires my most feverish work. Please see my other two Tessina design nos. 52 and 102.
This summer design theme of curry is open-ended, a format that allows me to jump back and forth solving different problems of scale.
The original Tessina 35 kit came with a wrist band and accessories such as an ultra-rare 17-jewel watch.
For the special challenge of incorporating baseball seductively into a camera design, I recalled a scene in the film, "The Eel", by Shohei Imamura.
There is no slower, less dramatic team sport. In fact, baseball can easily be a part of life, a game occurs almost daily, and on some days there's even a double-header.
The particular setting I envisioned from the film was an idyllic afternoon in a Japanese barber shop. No business, a fishing pole is stuck out in the backyard, lunch is on the burner, a day for catching up with the papers while listening to the game. Many of Imamura's films contain the device of such an idyllic interval, sandwiched between the outer dramatic moments.
The design camera is the architectural model for the house design inspired from the Tessina Watch.
Interior notes are as follows:
within the TV set is a b&w filter which covers over an iphone screen with online streaming baseball games. Alternately a tiny radio case fits over the iphone, with a monophonic speaker and antenna. The rest of the second-story living room has a comfy sofa, coffee table and a fish tank.
A lazy summer afternoon of baseball is thus delineated in the fantasy interior scene.
A staircase leads out of the apartment down to a trellised garden which is provided with air conditioning and heat from the ceiling (house-only detail) like some of Neutra's houses. A private sun roof accessible by ladder recalls the folding hood of the Tessina.
In the other half of the camera's interior space are serving utensils and packets for a complete British curry. All that is needed is access to a microwave.
In winter, the house has closing Shoji screens on the lower level. This makes camera model into a night lantern.

The Bond film, "The Spy Who Loved Me" provides a theme for this design vehicle, that of an intimate rendezvous.
A horseshoe-shaped rear aquarium feature surrounds the lovers. It houses a single (and slightly dangerous) nocturnal cephalopod behind turquoise-tinted glass which gives the ink of the octopus a deep sinister color. The toxic blue ringed octopus is a gentle reminder of the security system installed by Q-branch on the Esprit.
The extending hydroplanes have handles for up to eight persons.
An espresso maker, very modern for the 1970's, a portable air filtration system, a humidor inside the front center console, and three missile silos containing a reef-chilled hotel service to complete the tryst.
Other minor notes:
- the gear shift stick contains a cigar lighter similar to the Aston Martin DB5 from Goldfinger.
- the reef aquarium filtration system is cleaned by dumping "mine" filters.
- ample storage inside chassis areas contain a full change of clothing for both occupants
- the periscope is a small loudspeaker to communicate orders to the staff outside. It also houses a Leica Digilux 2 camera set to 40mm with a simple unattached shutter release.
- the louvered windows are open shutters allowing privacy and air circulation
- the air filtration system is a small air purifier for cigar smoke
- the small curved cowling of the aquarium attracts the large octopus to grab onto, leaving it's hiding place in the reef substrate.
- the missile silos contain a bottle of champagne, caviar, creme fraiche, biscuits, chocolates, all serving ware and a rose.
- six controls behind the bed headrest: to turn on the espresso maker (Nespresso), a snooze alarm, stereo, an overhead laptop with Skype, the periscope and the missile launcher food/wine service (see above description).

I have a particular interest in the life of the Duke of Windsor.
In 1941 a custom, one-off Cadillac was built entirely by hand for the couple, which was way ahead of its time as much of its design was introduced in later model Cadillacs. I fitted my design as an accessory to this limousine, called "The Duchess".
The automobile's styling and details are replicated and echoed throughout the camera.
The camera is made of clear and red lucite with a walnut finish throughout. It has three rotating segments that allow it to be studied as an architectural model for a housing design I will have in my book. The pinhole compartment of walnut finish is located in the middle segment. The film holder is fashioned as a dark slide controlled by a brass radio knob adapted from the automobile as well as the bottom segments which look like a pair of game hunting cartridges which holds the Duke's pipe tobacco (just as the auto whose interior carries his pipes, tobacco and the Duchess's jewelry) and a film magazine of 9 slides. Extra "cartridges" are carried in the suit pocket in the hunting style.
Please see the study model for this camera in the photo below.

Schloss Schlemmin
18320 Schlemmin
