Louvre - Sleeping Hermaphroditus - former Borghese Collection. An ancient marble sculpture depicting Hermaphroditus life size. In 1620 Gian Lorenzo Bernini sculpted the mattress upon which the statue now lies. The form is partly derived from ancient portrayals of Venus and other female nudes, and partly from contemporaneous feminised Hellenistic portrayals of Dionysus/Bacchus. Discovered at Santa Maria della Vittoria, Rome, bought by Cardinal Scipione Borghese and then sold to the Louvre - Paris/FR

The Arch on the Bridge over the Brook- a painting by Hubert Robert, 1798

The foyer is situated in the gallery constructed on the arches over the Winter Canal to the design of Yuri Velten in 1783 as a covered passage way linking the Great Hermitage and the Hermitage Theatre. The foyer decor was completed in 1902 to the design of Leonty Benois who managed to make it look unusual and refined at the same time. The gallery is decorated in the Rococo style known also as the style of the French king Louis XV. The splendid garlands of plants, scrolls and rocailles frame the inserts of paintings, cover the cove, decorate the wall panels, edge up the windows and doors. Through the large French windows supplying the gallery with bright light visitors may enjoy splendid views of the Neva River and the Winter Canal.

Serpents pectoral

René Lalique (1860-1945)

France, c. 1898-1899

Signed: LALIQUE

Gold and enamel

21 x 14.3 cm

Inv. no. 1216

This pectoral is one of the paradigms of René Lalique’s jewellery production, not only for the mastery of its execution, as for the theme chosen. Reptiles were a source of inspiration to which Lalique returned throughout his life not only for jewellery, but also for his glass, bronzes, etc.

The pectoral is made up of nine serpents entwined to form a knot from which the bodies of the other eight fall in a cascade, the ninth rising in the centre, at the top of the jewel. The reptiles, in the attack position, have their mouths open from which strings of pearls were hung as was apparently the case with a similar pectoral (the whereabouts of which are unknown), which was highlighted at the Paris Universal Exhibition in 1900 and reproduced in a publication of the period.

The present piece is thus probably the only one in existence. Calouste Gulbenkian acquired it directly from the artist in 1908.

After the 1968 National Democratic Convention, anti-war protesters and others started calling the police "PIGS." Taking inspiration from the Chicago Police and other police departments who redefined the word to mean "Prestige," "Integrity." and "Guts," I came up with this design.

The word "LIBERAL" means "Lovable," "Intelligent," "Brave," "Enlightened," "Responsible," "Authentic," and "Logical."

The design is on various items at LIBERAL.
