Portage Lake is a glacial lake in the Chugach National Forest of Alaska. It sits in a long, heavily glaciated valley, and abuts the calving face of Portage Glacier at its southern end. The lake has only become visible since approximately 1914, with the rapid retreat of Portage Glacier.

Picking Up Mommy

I cleaned the car today (finally). I did not complete the interior because the dogs would jump in the car if any door was open. So, I did the exterior, the windows (mostly), and inside the doors. I know it is going to rain for the next few days but I had to get the bird poop off and it had been way too long since I last washed it.

Although the girls got a good walk in this morning they were still fairly wound up before we picked up Julie.

Belt ornaments are the most distinctive artifacts associated with nomadic peoples from areas bordering the Qin region.

At Beikang Village near Xi'an, archaeologists discovered clay molds from the 3rd century BCE for manufacturing such plaques. Their findings confirmed that the Qin adopted such art forms from neighboring regions.

Movie

Julie and I are about to watch "Knives Out" at AMC Lennox. I got roped into joining the Stub Club for $15.

Earlier we dropped off Harper at doggy daycare and Julie had a mammogram appointment.

The movie was great and afterwards we did some shopping and had a late lunch at Atlas Tavern.

At night I had rehearsal with 4 Finger Shot for the first time in 2020 and the first time of this decade. We are coming along!

“To me, at least in retrospect, the really interesting question is why dullness proves to be such a powerful impediment to attention. Why we recoil from the dull.

Maybe it’s because dullness is intrinsically painful; maybe that’s where phrases like ‘deadly dull’ or ‘excruciatingly dull’ come from. But there might be more to it.

Maybe dullness is associated with psychic pain because something that’s dull or opaque fails to provide enough stimulation to distract people from some other, deeper type of pain that is always there, if only in an ambient, low-level way, and which most of us spend nearly all our time and energy trying to distract ourselves from feeling, or at least from feeling directly or with our full attention.

Admittedly, the whole thing’s pretty confusing, and hard to talk about abstractly… but surely something must lie behind not just Muzak in dull or tedious places any more but now also actual TV in waiting rooms, supermarkets’ checkouts, airport gates, SUVs’ backseats. Walkman, iPods, BlackBerries, cell phones that attach to your head.

This terror of silence with nothing diverting to do. I can’t think anyone really believes that today’s so-called ‘information society’ is just about information. Everyone knows it’s about something else, way down.” ―David Foster Wallace

“Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,

Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore―

While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,

As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.

"'Tis some visiter," I muttered, "tapping at my chamber door―

Only this and nothing more.”

Rehearsal

Another Shakin' and Stirred rehearsal. We worked on "Ain't My Fault", "Hey Ya", and "Feel It Still"

“I think it's much more interesting to live not knowing than to have answers which might be wrong. I have approximate answers and possible beliefs and different degrees of uncertainty about different things, but I am not absolutely sure of anything and there are many things I don't know anything about, such as whether it means anything to ask why we're here. I don't have to know an answer. I don't feel frightened not knowing things, by being lost in a mysterious universe without any purpose, which is the way it really is as far as I can tell.” ―Richard Feynman

This relatively empty airport hallway leading to the departure gates had provided me with an opportunity to take a somewhat surrealist interior picture.

A picture of a relatively empty hallway in Singapore's Changi Airport, leading to the numerous departure gates.

As the hallway already had an environment and atmosphere that I had found pleasing, I made use of a green filter to emphasize it and had gone for lighter edits with the picture.

Edited with VSCO Film preset from RAW file in Adobe Lightroom. Further editing and watermark placement to JPG file done in Adobe Photoshop CC.

Constructive feedback is welcome and appreciated.

Friends In Low Places

Alec and Kristina joined Julie in the basement this time and they seemed to have a great time. The dogs were playing and knocked into the tripod holding my phone a few times. It was good to have so many people there to correct the camera shot when that happened!

Earlier today I spaced out my guitar picture in the basement a little bit. It looks more artistic now. I also put a guitar hanger in my upstairs "changing" room. I liked the hook up with the top of the window so the guitar seems kind of high on the wall. I think it is best so I can put furniture under it without hitting the guitar if needed.

Ready

We have sound checked and we are ready! Tonight Jon Anthony & Wishful Drinking played "Barge Bash 2020" on Buckeye Lake. It was a "private" party but we were allowed to invite friends and family. I rode out with Joel Britt and Duane showed up with his girlfriend (Ginger?). Snakebite Sound ran sound and the barge was docked behind this rich guy's house. There were fireworks around 9:30pm or 10pm and we played until 11:40pm. Dave Gallagher sat in as second guitar since Steve Paxton was not available for the gig. It was awesome

Earlier I picked my Mom up and we went to lunch at Old Dog Alehouse in Delaware.

Julie was not feeling well so she stayed home for both "events"

Known as the 'Cathedral of Llŷn', the church of St Hywyn is in a striking location at the edge of the beach in the pretty village of Aberdaron, the tip of the Llŷn Peninsula, North Wales.

In the Middle Ages there were two main pilgrim routes, along the north and south coasts of the peninsula. They met at Aberdaron. It was here that pilgrims waited and prepared themselves for the short, but dangerous, crossing to Bardsey Island.

An intriguing feature inside the church is a pair of carved stones displayed against the north east wall. The stones are thought to be the gravestones of two early priests, Veracius and Senacus. It is possible that the priests were members of a small religious community here.
