“People see stories everywhere... We take random events and we put them together in a pattern so we can comfort ourselves with a story, no matter how much it obviously isn't true... We have to lie to ourselves to live. Otherwise, we'd go crazy.” ―Patrick Ness, More Than This

“The Book of Disquiet” ―Fernando Pessoa, 1982

“Life is an experimental journey undertaken involuntarily. It is a journey of the spirit through the material world and, since it is the spirit that travels, it is the spirit that is experienced. That is why there exist contemplative souls who have lived more intensely, more widely, more tumultuously than others who have lived their lives purely externally.”

Warhol’s blue-hued 1986 Self-Portrait, a fixture in the Hirshhorn’s collection, appears in “Brand New” both in real life and in an investment bank magazine ad of the same era. The original, though, is placed on a brazenly ripped-off expanse of Warhol cow wallpaper from 1984, which artist Mike Bidlo attributed to “Not Warhol,” as if to avoid copyright lawyers.

Opposite the portrait and appropriated wallpaper are a series of slides depicting costumed figures clearly modeled after Warhol’s Factory characters. This scene of artistic apery was staged by Bidlo and his friends in 1984.

Warhol, according to Gianni Jetzer, the Hirshhorn curator-at-large who spent two years organizing the show, was “a master of self-branding.” In a way, it’s only fitting that Warhol’s commercially influenced work was stolen and spun by followers like Bidlo looking to create personal brands of their own.

“I know that pain is the most important thing in the universes. Greater than survival, greater than love, greater even than the beauty it brings about. For without pain, there can be no pleasure. Without sadness, there can be no happiness. Without misery there can be no beauty. And without these, life is endless, hopeless, doomed and damned. / Adult. You have become adult.” ―Harlan Ellison, Paingod and Other Delusions

The Superfine! Art Fair / DC 2018 🎨

On day three in Chicago, it was fine, so I went to The Bean and took some photos without too many people about. However, on my way to Navy Pier, the fog came down for a couple of hours but did eventually clear.

“I must say a word about fear. It is life's only true opponent. Only fear can defeat life. It is a clever, treacherous adversary, how well I know. It has no decency, respects no law or convention, shows no mercy. It goes for your weakest spot, which it finds with unnerving ease. It begins in your mind, always ... so you must fight hard to express it. You must fight hard to shine the light of words upon it. Because if you don't, if your fear becomes a wordless darkness that you avoid, perhaps even manage to forget, you open yourself to further attacks of fear because you never truly fought the opponent who defeated you.” ―Yann Martel, Life of Pi

The terracotta archers exhibit some of the most animated poses among thousands of earthenware figures excavated.

This example kneels, presumably to load bolts into his crossbow. He is prepared for battle, with his hair tied in a tight topknot and a determined expression on his face.

He wears a short robe with tasseled armor on his chest and shoulders. One arm rests at his hip, while the other reaches across his mid-section, both hands once holding a crossbow aimed up and away from the ranks.

“I wonder if the snow *loves* the trees and fields, that it kisses them so gently? And then it covers them up snug, you know, with a white quilt; and perhaps it says, ‘Go to sleep, darlings, till the summer comes again’.”

“If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours. He will put some things behind, will pass an invisible boundary; new, universal, and more liberal laws will begin to establish themselves around and within him; or the old laws be expanded, and interpreted in his favor in a more liberal sense, and he will live with the license of a higher order of beings.” ―Henry David Thoreau, Walden

“Don't just say you have read books. Show that through them you have learned to think better, to be a more discriminating and reflective person. Books are the training weights of the mind. They are very helpful, but it would be a bad mistake to suppose that one has made progress simply by having internalized their contents.”

A mile west of the terracotta army pits, near the First Emperor's tomb mound, archaeologists discovered a small pit containing figures thought to represent court officials.

Wearing a curving bonnet, and a draping robe that conceals his clasped hands, this devoted earthenware official stands waiting patiently.

A paring knife and a pouch containing a stone sharpener, early court tools for writing, hang from his side. A small hole carved beneath his arm was perhaps used for storing important documents.

From a day wandering around Chicago, looking at its interesting architecture and other sights.

This is a mustard I whipped up Friday night to be added to some bourbon, black pepper bratwurst I purchased. It's absolutely delicious and I would highly recommend

Here is the recipe that I'm glad to share with you folks on Flickr

1/2 cup Dijon mustard

1 Tablespoon Creamy style horseradish

1 Tablespoon honey

6 slices thick cut hickory smoked bacon, fried crispy and crumbled

Mix all ingredients together and let sit for 24 hours for the flavors to mellow. I love my mustards very sharp so I used it right away.
