A cooking class; Dr. Lopez, the Director of the School, is at right. The vocations are pretty much sex-segregated; no boys in cooking class, no girls in shop.
A student in a computer class. The students at this school thrilled us with their devotion to learning and their sheer elan. It is depressing to know how difficult it is to reproduce this learning environment in the aldeas with which we work.

A small student work group. At this school, learning is collaborative--a common practice in the US, but rare in Guatemala, where rote learning and copying remains commonplace--mainly because of untrained teachers and a lack of materials.

On the campus. As with schools generally in Guatemala, this escuela is open to Nature, and this well-equipped urban school affords a truly pleasant teaching environment.
A mural painted on the wall of the art class. I need some help in interpreting the iconography, but this work is clearly politically charged, and I suspect would have gotten some people into trouble not too long ago.
