Spring 2009 Bee Instalation at Purest Honey Apiary. Photos by Pizzuti Studios Photography | Ashley Smuts

The western honeybee (Apis mellifera) is divided into numerous subspecies. When I first started beekeeping all the queens in my apiary were Cordovans which are the Italian honeybees ( Apis mellifera ligustica ). Recently I'm seeing a different subspecies that I believe are Carniolan (Apis mellifera carnica ). It will be interesting to learn which is the superior bee in terms of honey production and survivability. And as a side note, good luck trying to find her in a box of 30,000 bees, she blends right in.

The extractor sat here while the honey settled, then we put cheese-cloth lined seive over the sink and let it pour out into a container. This worked pretty well, and using the extractor was a lot less time-consuming than last year; just periodically came to the sink and let more honey out.

This “Pollinators’ Paradise” at Stanley Park was built by students in the woodworking club at Britannia Secondary, one of about 150 such bee homes around the city. This particular ‘pollinator’ houses a native species of bee, the Blue Orchard Mason bee, and assists in the essential pollination of flowering plants.

At apiary industry symposium an observation hive reflects participants and tent.

Our home apiary this afternoon. After a very frosty early morning the sun warmed up enough to entice the bees out for a much needed flight.

The new apiary will serve research purposes and as a source of revenue for the Bumpers College Entomology Club, which will harvest honey for sale. Our apiary with two WBC hives in the background. First snow of the winter

Just 2 days after we had to postpone our charity concert due to the terrible weather the bees were desperate to get out. I could hear them before I went up the steps to the apiary. The hive on the left which does not have lifts is wrapped in strong black plastic to stop woodpeckers from making holes in the wood to get at the grubs. I have heard woodpeckers in the nearby woods

Pretty good, but I wouldn't go here again. The location is kinda awful (NYU); decor the opposite of cozy.
