Portable "beehives" are rather common in Bavaria. This one is located near the villae of Weltenburg at the Danube. The picture was taken in the afternoon.
There's a nice apiary at the northeastern end of the Gaasperplas that I like to visit on my rounds. Though it was still quite chilly - about 7C - Bees were abuzz. But my attention was drawn by this Dronefly, Eristalis tenax, gathering pollen on a Daffodil flower.
I had my wildlife setup going and was practicing birds in flight shots, when out of frustration I looked down and saw this bee busy working away.
At the northeastern end of the Gaasperplas there's an apiary I like to visit when the temperature is right. For Bees to be flying out that's about 10 C. Today on New Year's Day the temperature soared amazingly to about 13 C. A record was broken for this area. Anyway...
So I went to have a look. Indeed, Bees were taking a little outing out of the warmth and closeness of their nest to shallow Sun out of doors. Nothing here in the way of nectar; all is still barren. But search for sweetness was not their goal. They stayed quite near their hive. Our Bees were taking care of their 'first business'; that is to say, they were cleaning out their guts - to phrase it delicately. As soon as they were done within a few metres of the hive, they quickly returned to its warmth.
At the end of the path you can see the Hortus's apiary of four hives. There are still a few Bees out, but not in these Autumn-colored trees. On the left a Red Cypress and on the right the yellow of Persian Ironwood in the Fall. Soon they'll have lost their leaves.
Dedicated to some friends who were determined to make reality happen even when things looked bleak. When humanity has disappointed you to the max, out of nowhere some guardian angels come to save the day. I am very humbled and grateful by your actions Aaron, Stacy and Will. I hope you and your families find much happiness in your lives.

Ice in many places on the banks of the Gaasperplas (www.flickr.com/photos/87453322@N00/54327362190/in/photost...) as I ambled past the Apiary on its far north-east side. It was just 0°C. Honeybees usually begin foraging at about 10 or 12°; when the thermometer is lower they huddle together in their hives or nests. If you put your hand on the sides, you'll be able to feel slight warmth and an inkling of movement of the beemassing inside. Still, those Bees have clean nests so even in bitter cold they do shortly leave their compatriots for a pitstop to evacuate their guts. In the photo at the top the Apiary, at bottom the doorway of a hive with some congregating Bees.
There are canola fields all over PEI, and many of them have apiaries attached to them to assist with pollination. It's truly a beautiful sight to see.

A beehive is an enclosed structure in which some honey bee species of the subgenus Apis live and raise their young. Though the word beehive is commonly used to describe the nest of any bee colony, scientific and professional literature distinguishes nest from hive. Nest is used to discuss colonies which house themselves in natural or artificial cavities or are hanging and exposed. Hive is used to describe an artificial structure to house a honey bee nest. Several species of Apis live in colonies, but for honey production the western honey bee (Apis mellifera) and the eastern honey bee (Apis cerana) are the main species kept in hives

Apiary is evidence of the once rich and various economic life in Dol. It dates back to the 16 th century whilst honey was produced until the end of 20th century. It is located on the property of Gospodnetić Martinović family. Such method of beehive construction is considered unique and is a remnant of an old Mediterranean cultural tradition. Beehives are made of stone plates and joined with a mixture of lime and soil. They are covered with a small roof removable to enable the extraction od wooden slats close to which bees were making honeycombs rich with honey. At the locality were found about 100 stone beehives.

Still hard to find bees, especially ones that aren't frantic and skittish. This one was no exception but I managed to get one good photo.
No cropping.
