A few bees finally came around, lingering in a dandelion for a few seconds before moving on to another and another and another... Not the best composition but a sign of things to come...
uncropped
This lethargic bee was having a hard time getting to the next flower so I gave her a boost. There was no sun, a lot of wind and was quite cool. Usually bumble bees are vibrating at a whole other level than the other bees making them annoying to photograph but today they were struggling. I gave her a boost and she decided to stick around for a bit. I cupped her in my hands and breathed warm air into the cup as she cleaned herself off.
Mmmm. This sign at our apiary at Clumber Park needs re-doing. It should say PLEASE BE AWARE. BEEHIVES IN THIS AREA OF THE GARDEN
Another one from the photoshoot I did yesterday.
Valentine in the pink baseball cap (a good tip for keeping veil off your face!) working with a beekeeping student in a practical session.
Valentine is the new Chair of the Ulster Beekeepers Association.
I did a photoshoot with her at one of her apiaries yesterday where she was delivering some practical training with some new beekeepers doing the UBKA "Introduction to Beekeeping" course.
The pictures are for consideration for using in an upcoming article about her.

Finally finished! (And it only took 2+ years.) New bed quilt for my seven-year-old, who requested "dandelions, bees, and a beehive." Blogged here: studioloblog.wordpress.com/2012/11/28/the-bee-quilt/

Song of the Bees
by Hannah Flagg Gould
We watch for the light of the morn to break
And color the eastern sky
With its blended hues of saffron and lake,
Then say to each other, "Awake! awake!
For our winter's honey is all to make,
And our bread for a long supply!"
Then, off we hie to the hill and the dell,
To the field, the meadow and bower.
In the columbine's horn we love to dwell,
To dip in the lily with snow-white bell,
To search the balm in its odorous cell,
The mint and the rosemary-flower.
We seek the bloom of the eglantine,
Of the painted thistle and brier;
And follow the steps of the wandering vine,
Whether it trail on the earth, supine,
Or round the aspiring tree-top twine,
And reach for a state still higher.
As each, on the good of her sisters bent,
Is busy and cares for all;
We hope for an evening with hearts content,
For the winter of life without lament
That summer is gone with its hours misspent,
And the harvest is past recall!

This place is not only colorful, but produces queen bees and excellent honey.
Bauernhof Südpark - Düsseldorf
The 'petting zoo' area of a city park, although bees don't seem too enthused by being petted.
Apiary Road, Rainier Oregon........A good quality Polarizer is key to getting the reflection off the water to give it that dark saturated apperance that contrasts with the white riffles. this was taken in the rain as well with nice dark overcast sky. also, I prefer to treat my raw image with "daylight" white balance. Letting the camera decide for you results in an overall warmer balance, I like these shots to be on the blue side. That is as technical as I ever get with color. I know my limitations....
Every one of these 4 is off to a great start, first super on already.
Shonen Knife - Wind Your Spring
A lively honeybee colony at the entrance of a traditional wooden hive with a perforated metal flight board. Several bees are returning with pollen loads, while others take off for their next foraging flight. Captured on a sunny spring day in Switzerland, this image reflects both the industrious energy and calm rhythm of hive life.
Resembling a scene in the film, “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”, a bee grabs a hydrangea pistil with its front legs and harvests the materials for the hive. The fertile hydrangea benefits in the transfer of the pollen grains to the plant carpel by the bee's messy movement, resulting in fertilization, an important step in the plant's reproduction.
Honey bees travel from flower to flower, collecting nectar and pollen grains. The nectar is later converted to honey. The pollen from the anthers collects on the hind legs, in dense hairs referred to as a pollen basket. As the bee flies from flower to flower, some of the pollen grains are transferred onto the stigma of other flowers.
In the Californian almond orchards, the largest managed pollination event in the world, where almost half (about one million hives) of the US honey bees are trucked to the almond orchards each spring. The apple crop in New York requires about 30,000 hives; the blueberry crop of Maine uses about 50,000 hives each year.
In a recent New York Time article, more than one quarter of the country's bee colonies have been lost by the Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) according to the Apiary Inspectors of America. A few possible proposed reasons include a pathogen, toxins, insecticides, or navigation interference by cell phone frequencies.

a garden full of bees
i would plant you a tree
one that grows quickly
