Saw some ants today marching up the side of the bee hive. When I investigated by taking off the roof this is what I found. They obviously did not like the wet ground so moved their brood to a nice dry place with underfloor heating. They were immediately evicted.
Ant-lion in a resting place carefully chosen for maximum camouflage value.
I haven't tried to identify my ant-lions - www.flickr.com/search/?w=49117104@N05&q=ant-lion - to species level but I think this is another new-to-me one.

The Scottish Wood Ant is the biggest ant in the British Isles. These three mounds were found in a forest in Aberdeenshire.
The ants have taken over one of my compost bins. It's full of larvae. Now I don't like to disturb them.
Black ants and larvae. Spotted these in my compost bin. As soon as I took the cover off, the ants started taking the larvae to a safer place
I do apologies for uploading this again albeit in slightly larger format simply because I was amazed when I look at the sheer strength of this ant as it dragged and chomped its way though this orb spider which a predatory wasp had momentarily abandoned.
The spiders eyes can clearly be seen something that again amazed me.

i was attacked by fire ants. After kicking my shoes across the dirt road, the buggers were still hanging on and biting like there would be no tomorrow.
