Ants discussing whether hobbits are indeed, NOT Orcs

From outside the Kheora mine, there is this small factory ( a run down one ) and in the exact middle I found these big ants.

...this Black Garden Ant (Lasius niger) appeared and attacked the loiterer with her jaws and formic acid sprayed from her rump. I apologise for the quality of the photo: it all happened quite suddenly and both were moving pretty fast.

rocks a centre stand. (yeah, i spell it with a "re", just like i spell it "tyre").

Ants can be such a PITA. I wondered why this harvestman was running around at high speed until I saw it had a red ant attached to it's rear end

Working ants in Gral. Roca, Argentina 2009

Green Tree Ants, also known as weaver ants build balloon shaped nests among the foliage of trees and shrubs with larval silk.

This little army of green are very territorial and workers aggressively defend their territories against intruders, inflicting painful bites and sometimes spraying formic acid at the bite wound.

You can see the fork in the ant roads there. As i got a closer look I could see a small team of ants clearing leaves from the path.

Some more photos of the ants and Aphids.

The highlight moment of a particular ant gentleman whose life ended two minutes after this.

A mean-looking ant enjoying a meal of aphids. Ok, I'll say it....Yuck!

Saw some ants today marching up the side of the bee hive. When I investigated by taking off the roof this is what I found. They obviously did not like the wet ground so moved their brood to a nice dry place with underfloor heating. They were immediately evicted.

Aahhh, Leg d'Ant was indeed tasty, but it sure doesn't compare with the Head!

I'm thinking this would go well as a framed picture in either the kitchen or dining room. What do you think???

The ants were busy tending the blackfly backwards and forwards and more than one ant.

Ant vs Aphid IMG_5834. Untouched photo (except for some minor trimming) taken with a Canon SX10 IS using a Raynox DCR-150.

The Scottish Wood Ant is the biggest ant in the British Isles. These three mounds were found in a forest in Aberdeenshire.

The ants have taken over one of my compost bins. It's full of larvae. Now I don't like to disturb them.

Ant milking an aphid nymph by stroking the aphid back with its antennae

Ants love milkweed nectar too.

I do apologies for uploading this again albeit in slightly larger format simply because I was amazed when I look at the sheer strength of this ant as it dragged and chomped its way though this orb spider which a predatory wasp had momentarily abandoned.

The spiders eyes can clearly be seen something that again amazed me.

Hope you enjoy looking at this as much as I did. You can tell I am a novice but keen.
