Aah, Phones.
I loved to answer the phone as a child! I'd race to be the first to answer when I could.
We just had the one phone line with a phone in the study and the kitchen.
In around 1999/2000 we got a second phone line to that we could have the internet/ECU modem pool connected that way, before ADSL was around.
In 2003 I got my first mobile phone, a Nokia 3315 in silver. I barely used it for calls unless I needed to, SMS was the cheaper way to go.
In 2006 my old Dell X30 PDA died, and though I did turn back to some trusty Nokias Dad had stashed away, we replaced it with a new O2 Atom Exec phone. I had my phone and PDA in one! This phone was awesome and I enjoyed using it until in 2010 the batteries, WiFi antennae and finally the whole thing gave way.
Then I went back to using a 'dumb' phone for a while until Phill came home on his birthday in 2011 with a new white iPhone 4S for me.
I got a brand new Nokia Lumia 925 for my birthday in 2013, but when I dropped Phill's phone and smashed the screen and the digitizer, I gave that to phone back to Phill and returned to my iPhone.
I'm still conflicted about Windows vs iPhone and I still long for the days of a stylus and handwriting recognition, but for now I'll continue babying my iPhone along until I can work out which way to go.
As for the landline, we have had VOIP since 2007 and I am just not a big fan of talking on the phone. Perhaps I did my dash speaking with Phill for hours every night while we were engaged!
This PCB is part of the announcement tape deck. To the right are the record/playback head and erase head for this unit. The pink wire ending in a solder tag connects to an insulated part of one of the tape guides, it is thus grounded by a switching foil on the tape at the appropriate time. The PCB contains the switches used to record new announcements on this tape, a DIN socket for the microphone. "...whitewash-brush to put it on with. The victim was then asked a question and if he answered it he got a good mouthfull of the mixture. He was then lathered and shaved with a razor made of an old saw blade after which they was thrown back into the tank and the hose played on him. This was finer amusement for the officers, who looked on, laughed at & enjoyed the whole performance. But we (the marines) made up our minds that they would not make laughing stocks of us. After shaving the sailors they waited on the orderly Sergt and asked if we would pay the fine or be shaved when he told them that we had made up our minds that we would do neither. They encouraged by some of the officers said they would shave us. We then rallied between two guns and told them that they should not take one of us, as several of them had clubs one or two of our boys drew their bayonets when but for the interference of the officers there would probably have been some blood spilt. They seeing that they could not take us on deck (although they mustered 200 or over to our 25) thought they would play the hose on us where we were. They then brought it down and when the water was let on they turned it on us thinking no doubt that we would stand and take it but in this they were mistaken for we pitched in and after a little "pushing out from the shoulders" we succeeding in taking the hose away from them..."

June 7, 2020. Boston, MA.
Thousands of protesters gathered on City Hall Plaza to denounce police brutality and call for defunding the force. Protesters at the “Unite against racist police terror!” event organized by Answer Coalition Boston called for shifting police funds toward other services to help black people dealing with systemic racism from housing, to health care, to education. They also called for the National Guard, which again blocked streets leading to Downtown Crossing Sunday afternoon, to leave the city. Demonstrators took a knee outside the Ruggles MBTA station before organizers recounted gains that have been made over the nearly two weeks of national protests, including the charging of the officers involved in Floyd’s death and Minneapolis Police banning chokeholds. Endorsing organizations are Massachusetts Public Defenders, Pride @ Work, Eastern MA, Boston Youth Organizing Project, Party for Socialism & Liberation, Boston Coalition, Workers World Party and the Dorchester Art Project.

Jordan is this week's Postbac in the Spotlight. Jordan answers questions from fellow postbac student Shelby here about his path to an MD and his postbac year at Bennington:
What made you want to become a doctor?
“When I was about sixteen I went to a boarding school called “High Mountain Institute” that had students spend half-months outdoors in Utah’s Dark Canyon, the Mosquito Mountains in Colorado and the deserts of Arizona. In order to prepare students for the unexpected while backpacking we were offered the opportunity to receive Wilderness First Aid and, later, Wilderness First Response training. I must have been a little bit of a jinx, because out of the three excursions I went on my group had emergencies twice! It was during these hairy situations that I got to apply what I had learned, and I found that I reacted well under pressure. After returning home, I became an EMT and I really enjoyed it. This experience and my passion for learning made me consider medicine as the next step in my academic career.”
What are you most excited about for when you become a doctor?
“Using a specialized education to achieve a specific, tangible, social good. I have a very open mind concerning where in medicine I will land, so it’s hard for me to be more specific than that. But in general, I like that medicine is a mix of immediately practical, and academic pursuits.”
What do you do in your spare time?
“When I do have spare time I play lots of music. I’ve had a passion for blues and jazz since I was about fifteen, and during the last year of completing my undergraduate degree I supported myself by teaching guitar and playing small gigs.
“I also have a dog. When the weather permits I like to take him on campus to run around or take walks. Other than that I read a fair amount; I am finishing Neil Gaiman’s “American Gods” right now and looking for a good book on chess tactics.”
What is your favorite science word?
“I’m going to cheat and use a phrase: ‘hydrogen bonding’.
It’s the answer to everything in chemistry and biology.”
Why did you choose Bennington?
“I completed my undergraduate education at St. John's College in Annapolis, a school that exclusively follows a ‘Great Books’ curriculum. For this reason I had never taken a ‘proper’ exam, or worked out of a textbook, or even really attended a lecture. The unique program at Bennington seemed to me a way to bridge the gap between my undergraduate training and the skills I will need in medical school. The professors are very involved in the curriculum, they encourage meeting for office hours, and they give ample amounts of feedback. This is the type of direction I needed while I developed study habits earlier this year. The first two terms for me were like being a freshman in college all over again.”
What has been your favorite moment at Bennington so far?
“So there was a lab in Chemistry 2—anyone who took the class will remember it because I absolutely made the whole laboratory smell like compost. Our professor, Janet Foley, had allowed us to design our own elimination/substitution reaction, and I had worked very hard to design what I thought was a very original and plausible procedure. When I showed it to Janet she wasn’t sure it would work, but encouraged me to try anyway. The procedure relied on introducing heat to a solution and then collecting one of many possible products because that product would evaporate as the solution boiled. Luckily, I ended up with something that was definitely different than what I started with, but that product didn’t have the structure I expected. I kept the NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectrometer) results in my apartment because I’ve never solved what the compound was.”
Post a pic of yourself & answer the questions :)

So many romantic places for friends, lovers and couples on the Second Life grid... we intend on finding them all!
We started out at Abraminations looking for a couples' animator so we could hug at every greeting. We went to MMAC after to hit some Jazz Links and stayed for a bit.
Maximillion Kleene had a show over at a place called Bubbly Nightclub. This is now our favorite place. An elegant romantic nightclub with a grand ballroom. Upstairs is the dinner club where you and your favorite avi can enjoy a beautiful 3 course meal with wine and desserts.
After Max's show, we walked around the promenade, window shopping and found a lovely gondola ride. The pose ball proposal wasn't real... or was it?
Bernie Madoff method was perfect and he had a very simple answer or solution ...say nothing or just lie.
He conned all those that were blinded by greed for the money they were getting at the expense of others. They all were hyped to get something ("split-strike-conversion plan") that was just to good to be legit however, their greed done them in.

-------------------------- HOW I MADE ANALOGUE PHOTOGRAPHY REDSCALE ------------------------------
I putted this film backwards by loading it into other film magazine or canister in a dark room ( every time I develop at the lab, I ask them to keep it and give it back to me), and sticking it to the tip of the already empty canister, so when shooting, the light had to get through the colored part of the emusion and then get captured by the film, I really liked the effect, just not the expusure to all of them, since I must have metered +2 stops, not as if I had a "normal" film.
Here's a link of how to do it: fmphotocourses.blogspot.com/2007/07/how-to-make-redscale-...
I got really inspired with the concepts and tittles in this roll =)
Quiz #16 06/23/08 – 07/06/08
This week’s quiz is a rather poor shot in low light. Despite this we can see some very bold field marks, mainly yellow underparts and a dark black throat. With such bright colors in this combination certainly the New World warblers and perhaps a few orioles come to mind, but little else. In terms of the orioles only really Hooded and young male Orchard Orioles could fit this bird due to the extent of the black bib and the fact that we can see some yellow feathers on the side of the face telling us that this bird does not have a totally black head as in Baltimore, for example. We can eliminate both probably by tail length and shape alone but, more definitively by foot color, being grayish blue in the orioles and pink in the quiz bird.
In terms of black bibbed, yellow warblers we have a few somewhat unexpected group of birds. In terms of full species Hooded, Bachman’s and Townsend’s are really the only three. But we must also consider Hermit x Townsend hybrids as well as Blue-winged x Golden-winged Warbler hybrids, specifically Lawrence’s Warbler. MacGillivray’s Warbler was guessed but can be eliminated, along with Mourning, by the yellow on the sides of the face and the jet black throat instead of a mottled looking throat. Not a bad guess though, as many other plumage characteristics fit nicely. (See tail pattern discussion below as well.) Townsend’s can be eliminated by the lack of black streaks down the flanks and upper breast. However, one could argue that a combination of Hermit (who’s bib matches quite well) and Townsend’s (which has yellow underparts) could fit well. To eliminate others we have to look at the undertail coverts (which are in slight shadow) and tail pattern (which is somewhat out of focus.) Even though both Lawrence’s and Bachman’s are nearly spot-on in terms of other plumage considerations both have/had white or whitish undertail coverts and bold subterminal black bars on the rectrices (tail feathers) neither of which are present. Plus, like last quiz’s inclusion of Ivory-billed Woodpecker, I likely would not be writing this if I had taking a picture of a Bachman’s Warbler because I would have suffered a massive heart-attack from the shock. The same eliminating features are true for both Hermit and Townsend’s Warblers and subsequent hybrids. So we are left with Hooded Warbler and, indeed when we look at the tail pattern of this species with the broad nearly completely white outer rectrices, it’s a match.
I took this shot of a singing male HOODED WARBLER in Olmsted Township, Ohio (west of Cleveland) on a recent trip. I have included another, much better
shot of this guy. Low numbers of answers this time. Not a complaint just an observation. I always find this part of the quiz very interesting. Maybe this was a difficult one? Or maybe people are spending more time outside!
Answer Breakdown:
MacGillivray’s Warbler – 1
Hooded Warbler – 1
ANSWER:
HOODED WARBLER
