Cobbles in the rain seem to be as slick as the back of a giant lizard coming out of the river.
Or maybe I just have an over-active imagination.
As I tottered back from hospital last night I was struck by the brightness of the moon and the clarity of the sky. There are an awful lot of bright lights on the side of the building (out of shot) so I was amazed this came out at all.
Arnside coastguard siren warns of the approaching incoming tide and tidal bore.
it's seriously loud!
Not far from this spot was Morecambe's West End Pier. Opened in 1896 it was partially destroyed by storms in 1977 and demolished in 1978.
It has been delightfully warm lately, but my fridge is full and my veggies are wilting ... so rather than let them spoil, I pickled them. A strange mixture of Korean radish (mu), carrots and red onions. The liquor is a mixture of water, vinegar, salt, sugar, and spices (a random assortment).
I bought the mu from the market - I was amused by its name, as it is also the response to a famous Zen koan. I wrestle with it from time to time, having been introduced to it by a Catholic nun, Sister Elaine MacInnes, who was also a Zen roshi (master).
I haven't uploaded my 2021 fireworks yet, so here are some manipulations from an old 2015 shot from my Olympus EM-10. These are from a mix of Android apps including Mirror Lab and Chroma Lab. I love the bright colors and neat abstracts I get from using these apps.
Today, 9 Nov 2024, Germany marks the 35th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. That day in 1989 was one of huge celebration and relief for many. It also marked the beginning of the end for the DDR, and led to the reunification treaty of 3 October 1990.
Not everyone was happy about this, and some even felt that they had been annexed.
It marked a turning point in the way that Europe works, and a step towards the current position in which Europe now finds itself.
With that said, Berlin was definitely party central back then.
Some tea stains. So treated them and laundered. Stains all gone. But now there are different ones. Re treat and re wash. I wonder if there will be an improvement!
From the castle hill you look out across Morecambe Bay to the distant Lakeland Fells.
My climbing teacher told me that a day without a mountain is wasted. I agree completely.
I cannot abide wasting food; it is so lacking in imagination, will, and sense of responsibility.
The supermarket was dumping these avocados because they have gone too soft to sell (too soft for whom?). So I grabbed one to use for my salad.
This avo has come all the way from Peru. 20% of the emissions from growing it are made of the transportation, so putting it in the bin will be more than a waste: i find it offensive.
Sure, it wasn't the greenest fruit, but smashing it and mixing in a chiffonade of scallions, garlic, cayenne pepper, and some lemon juice has made this into a delicious accompaniment for crisp lettuce, or whatever.
And the farmer in Peru has my gratitude for growing such a wonderful fruit.
It's that time of year again when the bees are out, foraging and gorging. Here's one of several bees that were busy on this clump of mint.
If you look carefully, you can make out the bee's white tail.

A kissing gate is designed so that the gate can swing freely, and not be latched; the gate just 'kisses' the posts when it swings. This way, only people and not cattle can get through.

Rising in the Lake District National Park as a series of streams, it flows rapidly downhill to the north of Kentmere where the River Kent flows into the Kentmere reservoir. The reservoir was built to regulate the river flow, which benefited the mills located further downstream.
