From my archive - a chance conversation today reminded me of this place, which was established in 1974.
I would go here as a teenager with my friend after a night on the town. Fresh beigels at 5 am - no problem. Just get there.
These days we would have smartphones, and order online in advance:

Some people whom one meets are just delightful. To be in their company is like seeing these flowers in the afternoon sunshine.
Alexander Calder, c1945
From the archive.
Went out today but somewhat overwhelmed by the noise and people. So, might stay home for a day or so. Hence, old pictures but ones that I like, and hope you do, too.
I like Calder's work very much.
I made this yesterday for 40 and had some left over. Soup is always better on the second day! It is easy to make, and fairly cheap, too. This all took about 40 minutes to produce, including veg prep. I am blessed to have a food processor to do all the heavy chopping.
Ingredients
Sweet potato
Carrots
A can or two of good tomatoes
Onion
Ginger
Olive (or canola) oil
Chili flakes
Garlic
Stock )veg or chicken)
Garnish with anything - I used rocket because I had some in the kitchen; pepper and a dollop of yoghurt
How
In a big pan
Heat up a little oil
Add chopped onions and garlic and sweat for a while
Add ginger and chili
Stir and heat till fragrant
Add the rest of everything and cover with the best stock you have
Raise to a boil and then allow to simmer for 20 minutes or so
Use an immersion blender to render everything into a creamy pan of love
Add salt if you think it needs it.
Garnish and Serve.
Inside the Atkinson shop. An almost bewildering array of excellent tea and coffee, as well as some essential gear for the home barista.
Roasting is done on the premises.
Also, it's a B Corp company with high ethical standards.
A knackered Ferguson tractor in Whangamomona. The tyres look good enough to be revived with new tubes, and some TLC for the motor and running gear should produce a workable tractor, ideal for a small holding.
Not sure what the big bolt on the ground is for, but I can see why one might keep it handy - you just never know when it might be useful!
My favorite mannequin has gone on vacation, and the windows have been dressed with these lovely clothes. Northern Dye House now operates from this store on Brock Street.
They make 'proper good clothing'. From their website:
"The Northern Dye House is a no-nonsense hand dyed clothing company based in the heart of North West England. We design and create beautiful hand dyed, unisex streetware for everyone."
