I don't get so many photos of Bella as she's so feisty and barely sits still. She does most of her sleeping at night, she probably thinks she's human.
A levelling plate, also known as a flush bracket, is a specific type of brass fitting found on trig points (triangulation pillars) and other structures used for surveying and mapping. It is designed to provide a precise and stable surface for attaching a levelling staff during height measurement, enabling accurate determination of elevations above sea level.
If you type in 'trig point S5406' or whichever trig point you are looking at, into your browser, you will get a page telling you all about the trig point itself:
I have included this in my Benchmarks album because the abbreviation on the plate, OSBM, stands for Ordnance Survey Benchmark.
And I just realised I should have 'trued' this picture to put the plate completely vertical, as it is in life. I'll do that sometime =]
Today, 9 Nov 2024, Germany marks the 35th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. That day in 1989 was one of huge celebration and relief for many. It also marked the beginning of the end for the DDR, and led to the reunification treaty of 3 October 1990.
Not everyone was happy about this, and some even felt that they had been annexed.
It marked a turning point in the way that Europe works, and a step towards the current position in which Europe now finds itself.
With that said, Berlin was definitely party central back then.
First day back at work ...
I got a new recipe to try:
Round about the cauldron go;
In the poison'd entrails throw.
Toad, that under cold stone
Days and nights has thirty-one
Swelter'd venom sleeping got,
Boil thou first i' the charmed pot.
Who knows - they might enjoy it =]
Not far from this spot was Morecambe's West End Pier. Opened in 1896 it was partially destroyed by storms in 1977 and demolished in 1978.
Autumn brings grey skies and colorful trees. This cherry has brought so much joy over the last year.
Every day yields a moment of joy if you are prepared to look.
A small tortoiseshell browses on the last season's buddleia.
With today's equinox, autumn starts in the northern hemisphere.
Is the lamp a tree?
The cross bar below the lamp was to allow the lamplighter to rest his ladder, should he need to change the mantle, or otherwise service the lamp.
It's a quiet day at home; housework and such like.
If you want a laugh, it's just taken me the best part of an hour to make the bed with my new linen. I was baffled not to be able to find the opening for the quilt cover. I was about to get my sewing kit out and open a seam ... and then I found some buttons.
The stripes run horizontally, not vertically, as I had expected. So confused. More signs of cognitive decline? Or just an example of aesthetic dissonance?
If you are also challenged by longitude and latitude, have a read of this. It's excellent:
My first picture shot in Raw format and developed with Snapseed.
You can see how the season is changing from the storm glass and buoyant floats in the thermometer.
But there's still one more flower bud waiting to bloom.
A kissing gate is designed so that the gate can swing freely, and not be latched; the gate just 'kisses' the posts when it swings. This way, only people and not cattle can get through.
Due to budgetary constraints the traditional Town Crier has become a thing of the past in most places. However, there is still a legal requirement to tell people what is going on in certain instances.
I spotted this notice this morning and was amused by the archaic legalese in which it had been written.
"Whereas by virtue of the provisions of the above enactment ... the Council is empowered on days appointed for Carnivals or similar occasions to direct the passage and stoppage of vehicles or persons ...
Now therefore the City Council do hereby order that the roads listed in the Schedule hereto shall be closed ..."
In English, that means this road will be closed for a bit, so don't even think about parking or driving down it. Or else!
