This shop took me back to my childhood in an instant. Dolly pegs, wooden backed bristle scrubbing brushes, and proper soap, among other delights. And almost no plastic to be seen.
Eton Mess came about after someone at Eton College dropped a pavlova and gathered it all up again. Allegedly.
I didn't drop this (honestly) but my scrambled egg was a disaster.
I didn't go to Eton, btw 😅
Merry Christmas, everyone.
Friends made me a card and I wanted to share the joy.
Peace on Earth and goodwill to all 🙏
The joke used to be that the Lada Niva, or VAZ-2121 was invented to save the Soviet government money from upgrading the roads. Now, where did I leave my ushanka?!
It's that time of year again when the bees are out, foraging and gorging. Here's one of several bees that were busy on this clump of mint.
If you look carefully, you can make out the bee's white tail.

Looking towards Barrow across Morecambe Bay, you can make out the massive sheds where they build submarines.
Not long ago, the council would have removed this log from the park. Today fallen trees and logs are usually left in place, if they are not fangerous, to provide homes for beetles and other insects. All part of preserving the diversity of the environment.
Meet the latest member of the household, Number Five. He's from Cambridge, so 'Five' seemed obvious, if a bit unkind. So Number Five it shall be.
Russ Berrie & Co (the makers) was registered in New Jersey, and this bear was nearly called Tony (Soprano) but Five is a reformed character now.
Tonight is Walpurgis Night. It commemorates the 8th-century Saint Walpurga, but blends Christian, pagan, and folklore traditions, featuring bonfires, dancing, and the symbolic driving away of evil spirits and winter.
The usual thing to do is to light a massive bonfire to drive off the evil spirits and witches. I don't have the space for that. so I lit a candle instead.
I last celebrated this festival many years ago close to the peak of Brocken with my then hiking partner. It was a very special night. It's important to make memories while you're able.
Saint Paul's, Scotforth. Designed by Paley and Austin, incorporating grit stone and terracotta tiles, hence its nickname.
Flaking render will allow the ingress of water which will dissolve the original lime mortar. It might look charming in a shabby chic way, but it's irresponsible property management.
Today, 9 Nov 2024, Germany marks the 35th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. That day in 1989 was one of huge celebration and relief for many. It also marked the beginning of the end for the DDR, and led to the reunification treaty of 3 October 1990.
Not everyone was happy about this, and some even felt that they had been annexed.
It marked a turning point in the way that Europe works, and a step towards the current position in which Europe now finds itself.
With that said, Berlin was definitely party central back then.
After several months of disuse this shop window looks distinctly unloved.
The origin of this Banksy copy (?) is unknown but it remains in place.

The weather improved by midday so it was nice to walk to Williamson Park and have a bacon bun for lunch. Here's the Williamson Memorial.
The light has changed while I was out. I sent this to my friend who is in hospital. I hope it makes him smile.
Cobbles in the rain seem to be as slick as the back of a giant lizard coming out of the river.
Or maybe I just have an over-active imagination.
