EXPLORE: Sept. 15 #291

The Forum from the Palatine Hill:

Ancient Rome was the largest city in the then known world. It is thought that Rome’s population was over 1 million people when the city was at the height of its power. From Rome, the heart of government beat; military decisions were taken and the vast wealth Rome earned was invested in a series of magnificent buildings. To start with, many buildings in Rome were built around the forum. Traditionally, this had been a market place and an area where people met. Therefore, it would have been a natural place to put government buildings, temples and palaces. As Rome grew, however, the forum became more and more crowded. Therefore, a second city centre was planned and built some distance from the forum but still in Rome itself...

Vestibolo circolare

Cupola in vetro "Luce e tempo"

So many angles but didn't have my right lens for my Nikon camera. I decided to GoPro this photo which had a wide enough angle. I really am willing to spend the night in Rome next time to capture twilight shots of this amazing structure.

Roman era Amphitheater built in the Augustinian empire, Merida ES. Merida ES off the beaten path but is a trove of antiquity and incredible sights, with amazing people and outstanding cuisine.

Septimius Severus and his son Caracalla share some physiological and political traits.

Severus managed to bring some order to the period of anarchy that followed —or more likely predated – the demise of Commodus, of ‘Gladiator’ fame. He showed some talent at keeping at least some of the Roman aristocracy on side, while really establishing what was more or less a military dictatorship.

His son Lucius Septimius Bassianus, better known as Caracalla, didn’t hesitate in having his brother murdered upon co-inheriting power from his dad, and dispensed with the niceties of keeping part of the aristocracy on side. He had a most profound influence on the Roman world by extending citizenship to all of its freeborn denizens, but the lack of support for his autocracy outside the military led to his eventual assassination on a Syrian road, as well as an atrocious reputation that survives to this day.

Fesses

fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fesse
