🙌 The Forum of Trajan was, by far and away, the largest and most opulent of the Imperial Fora. Designed by Apollodorus of Damascus, its architecture fused precedent with groundbreaking novelties, including the Basilica Ulpia and Trajan's Column.
In fact, I first stumbled upon the design for Trajan's Column all the way back in 2020, and have finally applied it here. Once again, that which is done well enough, is done quickly enough!

📜 Subura Minor picks up where we left off in the fairly dense neighborhood of the ancient city, with a comparatively smaller slice of land area. While smaller geographically, this locale was considerably outsized in its role as a growing administrative center during the later years of the Roman Empire. As the imperial sphere of influence shifted east toward Constantinople, the office of the Urban Prefect grew beyond its managerial purview over the city and its territories, to that of de facto governor during the emperors' increasingly prolonged absences. As a result, the new administrative state expanded to encompass most surrounding buildings across an area of roughly 46,000 square meters; a far larger chunk of the nondescript domūs and insulae of Subura than are represented in this section alone.

️ SUBURA MEDIA - Design Insights
📜 You'd be forgiven for thinking - given the title of Subura Media - this portion of the densely populated ancient neighborhood of Rome would fall between the previously covered minor and maior. While you'd be correct in the topographical ordering of the three, Subura Media comes out on top as the one with the largest area, which is especially fitting given it is the final subsection of my Phase II design efforts focused entirely on Subura.

📜 Imagine the hustle and bustle of daily life for the vast majority of the Eternal City's ancient inhabitants. Most went about their business tending to their homes, venturing to the city markets or taking part in public gatherings at a local temple or basilica. Those more prone to vice might have spent their time and hard-earned sestertii gambling or in a local lupanar (pleasure house). Odds are, most would not have needed to venture beyond the Ancient Roman neighborhood of Subura to take part in any such activities. In fact, it was the extreme density and array of amenities packed within this largely disreputable quarter of the city where large percentages of the city's one million residents were once packed.

The Rome of antique yesteryear was a dense, sprawling and often haphazard cityscape spread over more than just the fabled Seven Hills. "Dense" and "sprawling" are ways in which most of the urban core of Imperial Rome could be described, including even the grand imperial edifices such as the Imperial Fora, most recently covered in the past five DESIGN Insights posts.
"Haphazard," on the other hand, was once the daily reality for the living conditions of the majority of the city's residents. Discover why as we explore the Via Lata in today's DESIGN Insights post!

📜 Atop the western slopes of the Quirinal Hill, there once stood an imposing complex of sacred precincts. From its terraced vineyards, connected over considerable elevation via winding corridors of switchback ramps, this impressive structure was built under the emperors of the Severan dynasty during the late second century CE, and it is the subject of today's DESIGN Insights.

Today, we examine the preeminent imperial thermae built before all other such complexes in the Eternal City. The Baths of Titus set the standard for what would become ever larger thermae complexes built during several succeeding imperial dynasties. When it came to the art of imperial propaganda, the Roman emperors could always be counted on to outdo their predecessors. As such, the eponymous emperor Titus sought to break the mould of what had previously been more disparate Roman baths scattered throughout the city, and establish a consolidated precinct within which all expected amenities were contained and laid out symmetrically, including frigidaria, tepidaria and caldaria (cold, tepid and hot bathing rooms).

📜 The addition of the gladiatorial training grounds in this week's Design Insights marks the culmination of the digital design for Phase II of SPQR! Since July, there have been seventeen Design Insights posts highlighting new areas of the Eternal City each week. All told, this work represents roughly 7.7 million square feet over dozens of meters in elevation and consists of more than 107,000 individual bricks; all of which will inevitably result in a landscape diorama of over 211,000 bricks once built and integrated with Phase I.
