… Reliable sources report the Twins were seen watering their horse close to where these 3 columns still stand, circa 496 BCE :-)

When in Rome

... according to Edward Gibbon, things turned sour under the reign of his predecessor, Commodus. A highly debatable - and highly debated for over 2 centuries - assertion.

Statuesque ...

… Septimius Severus took over from his assassinated friend Pertinax, after defeating no less than 3 distinct – and distinguished – rivals.

He left a reputation as an effective ruler, although he turned Rome into even more of a military dictatorship, to the greater dismay of the surviving members of the Roman Senate.

After campaigning in Britain against the Caledonian tribes for unclear reasons, he died in York, reportedly leaving this telling last piece of advice to his sons: “Be harmonious, enrich the soldiers, scorn all others”.

Statuesque ...

… several different portraits – both in pictural and sculptural form – have been reported as being likenesses of Pertinax, so it’s difficult to know whether he was the dignified looking fellow exhibited in the entrance of the British Museum.

Publius Helvius Pertinax is certainly described in ancient sources as a distinguished soldier and newly minted senator – his father was a freedman – who was instrumental in bringing down Commodus’s freedman and supremely corrupt councillor Cleander.

After Commodus’s assassination, he was hailed as emperor, but his efforts at reforming the state were cut short within 3 months when he was murdered by members of his Pretorian Guard, whose power within the state he was trying to bring in check.

His assassination inaugurated a period of civil war which saw no less than 3 candidates fail in their efforts to gather power before Pertinax’s friend and sometimes colleague Septimus Severus managed to gather the remains of Roman power and found a new dynasty.

Wide angle view of Fourth Century floor mosaic in the Basilica of Aquileia, Italy

impression from our walk around an archaeologic excavation site near the Capitol in Rome.

… this bronze likeness dates back to the early Twentieth Century and was erected in 1980. Old Trajan himself is not known to have ever visited his province of Britannia, much less the prosperous city of Londinium.

But he might as well, since we know next to nothing about his life. Although it has been reported he wrote an autobiography, much like Augustus and Claudius, his work if it ever existed has been lost since the Middle Ages.

Vexillationes from the legions based in Britannia as well as British based Batavian auxiliary cohorts took part in his campaigns in Dacia and Parthia, so he may have come to raise them himself, who knows…

As for the London Wall in the background, only the base stone and brick work dates back to Roman times. It was erected in the late Second Century CE, long after Trajan was gone. In his times, city walls were not deemed necessary.

Pantheon.

… used to have quite a reputation as a party boy. But it may have been a literary and maybe political ploy used by reporters to emphasise his adopted brother and co-emperor Marcus Aurelius’s gravitas and auctoritas.

In any case, he seemed to have waged a very successful war in the East against the Parthians, by shrewdly delegating his command and limiting the objectives to the reasonable and politicaly expedient.

Unfortunately his legions brought back a lethal infectious disease from their campaign – later known as the Antonine plague – which he apparently contracted himself and died from at the early age – for a patrician – of 38, leaving Marcus Aurelius on his own to repel the encroachments launched by the Marcomani and Quadi kingdoms in what is now Hungary (Gladiator anyone :-)

Statuesque ...

… should definitely be played by Ciàran Hinds if there’s ever a biopic or tv series :-)

Which will necessarily be short on historical facts, given we know surprisingly little from someone who was considered the most successful Roman emperor ever by his own contemporaries, and their descendants.

What’s left of his correspondence with Pliny the Younger gives an interesting insight into his thought process, especially regarding delegation of power. But the actual words and language are probably those of his Correspondence Secretary/ies.

… his dad was one of the Flavians’ most reliable generals. No slouch in the military department himself, he pushed the Empire to its widest extent by presiding over the conquest of Dacia and Mesopotamia once he had become Imperator Caesar Nerva Traianus Divi Nervae filius Augustus.

The final sprint on the via dei Fori Imperiali brought an exciting end to 21 stages of the Giro d'Italia just in front of the Altare della Patria.

When I finish watching this summer's grand tours, you can find me on Twitter

El Foro Boario era una zona de la antigua Roma situada en la ribera izquierda del río Tíber, entre el Campidoglio y el Aventino. También se conocía como tal una plaza inserta en la misma zona, en la cual se producía el mercado de animales.

Ostia Amphitheater built at the end of the 1st century BC by Agrippa son-in-law of Augustus. able to accommodate 4000-5000. What grand spectacles that must have occurred.

… Marcus Aurelius was a lucky man :-) Of course she was Commodus’s mum, but apart from the fact she and Marcus had 11 children – most of whom died at an early age – we know next to nothing about her life.

February 3rd, 2022 - #425

Have a lovely day, everyone...

… he’s not going to take any nonsense - be brief and to the point :-)

Statuesque ...

… good looking fellow Tiberius :-) Since he didn’t succeed his adoptive father until the age of 55, this portrait was probably carved at an earlier time, possibly before his temporary and more or less self imposed exile to Rhodes.

At the time Rome’s most successful and celebrated general, Tiberius seemed to have had a very complex personality, a love/hate relationship with Augustus and a much troubled love life.

Statuesque ...

… such a shame we know so very little about Antoninus, a leader so skilful and successful that emperors would still try to associate themselves to his ‘dynasty’ – he had no surviving children of his own – over a century after his death, while his contemporaries gave him the honorary name of Pius, a much more powerful term in Latin than its English translation, and promptly deified him and his wife Faustina both.

… or more accurately Gaius of the Julii. His chin and forehead betray him :-) Doesn’t look much like Ciaran Hinds, sorry HBO.

This very damaged marble portrait – this is not his best profile, this is his *only* profile – was excavated in the nineteenth century from the sanctuary of Athena Polias in Priene, now in Turkey. It was found with an – also damaged – bust of Claudius and was probably sculpted around 50 CE.

Statuesque ...

… Salonia Matidia, niece of Trajan, mother-in-law of Hadrian. Of course, as she is a woman, we know next to nothing about her deeds and acts.

El Templo Romano de Évora es uno de los más grandiosos y mejor preservados de toda la Península Ibérica

Hadrian's Villa was constructed at Tibur (modern-day Tivoli) as a retreat from Rome for Roman Emperor Hadrian during the second and third decades of the 2nd century AD

Town of neolithic origin, high on a hill plateau @ 911m seen many civilizations come and go. But if you look, there still fleeting beautiful of it's past. Frigento Italia. My father's family home town, and town of many memorable summer vacations when young, and town of my heart.

… that was quite a wife he had… Not a bad looking fellow himself, although he never looked any close to Richard Harris. So much for Gladiator :-)

Have a wonderful day, everyone...

… the role model for every successor till at least Severus Alexander. And Fautina's dad. Such a shame we know so little about his actual deeds. Rome and its empire never again reached such prosperity.

… which may be a cause for concern, given his somewhat checkered reputation :-)

Marcus Aurelius Severus Antoninus Augustus, or Antoninus on official business, lived in difficult times, and managed to grant full Roman citizenship to all free denizens of his empire, a momentous decision reaching at least a cool 30 millions, possibly more.

Granted, his motives were more likely fiscal than anything else, but still…
