Porta all'Arco (IV e III secolo a.C)

Porta all'Arco (4th - 3rd century BC)

The Porta dell'Arco (or all'Arco) of Volterra, dating from about the period between the fourth and third century BC, is part of the city walls, originally built by the Etruscans and then modified in the Middle Ages when the city was a free municipality.

It is the main access to the city from the south side, then opposite the other Etruscan gate of Volterra, Porta Diana, to the north.

The door has suffered in a lesser way, compared to similar buildings in other cities, the Roman alterations after the submission of the city to Rome and in fact it still presents the grandiose majesty typical of the Etruscan city gates.

As in every great city, there is it's port. Ostia was the main port for Roma and it's empire (Imperium Romanum). Also as in any city of antiquity, as now theaters are a must. As for the shows, spectacles and crowds, it must have been amazing. Vareus culture's that mingling in this city are clearly visible in the impressive mosaics. Sort of like a modern day Manhattan. Numbers of people that have passed through the ages at this port. SPQR aeternum

Some of the finest mosaics in Rome can be seen in the San Clemente church near the Colosseum. The mosaics in the apse date from the first half of the 12th century and illustrate the Triumph of the Cross. 14th-century frescoes below depict Christ and the Apostles.

San Clemente is one of Rome's most remarkable architectural and archeological ensembles. The medieval upper church is built on an older 4th-century basilica, which in its turn is covering ancient Roman buildings with among others a mithraeum, a sanctuary of the cult of Mithras.

Since January 5 is National Bird Day, I was going through my archives for photos of birds for an appropriate image. This is the 20th anniversary of #NationalBirdDay and I thought this proud gull overlooking Trajens Market and the Victor Emmanuel II National Monument, was a perfect candidate to draw attention to this day.

When I'm finished looking at birds, you will find me on Twitter

… he probably got his ‘Faithful’ cognomen on account he kind of forced the deification of his predecessor and adopted father. Hadrian had had a few too many senators executed in his latter years to make that prospect very palatable to the Senate.

… the Maison Carrée, erected in Nemausus at the very end of the 1st Century BCE, remains the best preserved temple façade in the whole Roman Empire. It was dedicated to Lucius and Gaius Julius Caesar, grandsons of Augustus, and presumptive successors to the Princeps before their much lamented early demise and deification.
