This pic was taken in the dead of night -- the strange color in the sky comes from the reflection of the lights off of the falling rain. (Yes,it was raining. I had my umbrella to cover my camera and tripod.)

As well he should: in a few short weeks, he nearly succeeded in bringing the Empire back from the depths Commodus had plunged it.

 

He was unlucky though, and maybe a little too intransigent when negotiating with some of his Pretorian guards. Upon hearing they would have to wait a bit for their promised and traditional donative, they unceremoniously stabbed him to death and put the Purple for auction.

Farnese Sarcophagus, considered the most important ancient Roman sarcophagus in America.

 

One of the passageways that ran under the floor of the Colesseum. Various cells and rooms branch off from this passage which stretches the length of the ruin. Imagine what it must have been like to be held here prior to fighting or being attacked by a wild animal.

News print of antiquity, the arch depicts the triumph of Constantine l at the Battle of the Milvian bridge. Battle was between Emperors Constantine I and treacherous Maxentius on October 312. Bridge was an important route over the Tiber one of the main Via's to Rome.

It was prior to the battle that Christianity in Rome was to be accepted. Constantine and his soldiers seen a vision sent God. It was interpreted as a promise of victory if the sign of the Chi Rho, the first two letters of Christ's name in Greek, this was painted on the soldiers' shields and a decisive victory was won changing Rome and the world forever.
