A macro view of a lens-distorted light switch and decorative plate.

Strobist info:

The switch and plate were illuminated by a single Nikon SB900 speedlight positioned at 5-o'clock and slightly above and behind the camera. It was fired in Manual mode @ 1⁄64 power through a 24" x 24" Neewer soft box.

The SB900 was triggered by two PockerWizard Plus X flash triggers.

The Ludwig Canal (German: Ludwig-Donau-Main-Kanal or Ludwigskanal), is an abandoned canal in southern Germany. It linked the Danube River at Kelheim with the Main River at Bamberg, connecting the Danube basin with the Rhine basin. The canal is named after King Ludwig I of Bavaria, and was built between 1836 and 1846.

The canal had a narrow channel, with many locks, and a shortage of water in the peak section, so the operation of the waterway soon became uneconomic — especially given the rapidly advancing construction of the railway network in the southern German countryside. The canal was finally abandoned in 1950, rather than repair the damage suffered during World War II.

Construction of the roughly parallel, but much larger, Rhine–Main–Danube Canal was started in 1921, but not completed until 1992.

Today

About 60 km of canal, between Nuremberg and Berching, still exists and is in good condition. Some of the locks still function. Part of the tow path has been converted to a bike path.

Although painted to represent a USAAC OA-10 Catalina based in Halesworth, Suffolk in WW2, this is actually an ex Canadian example which served the RCAF as '11005'.

The original 433915 aircraft operated out of Halesworth airfield in the role of air sea rescue during 1945 and on 30th March that year after landing to provide help to of all things another stricken flying boat the aircraft lost use of one engine. With high seas that meant she was stuck just a few miles off the Dutch coast. Whilst bobbing around on the surf on the first night a pair of ME210's strafed the Catalina to such an extent that she was listing and no longer airworthy. Four days later after enduring constant seasickness and regular immersion in freezing sea water the crew were rescued by a launch sent out from Great Yarmouth. A second launch then destroyed and sank the Catalina rather than have her fall into enemy hands.

For the above reasons the preservation society chose to adopt the identity of the sunken sister aircraft. The preserved aircraft is now based at Duxford with Catalina Aircraft Ltd.

The Cliffs at Étretat:

The work is one of many undertaken by Claude Monet of this stretch of the Normandy coastline and depicts the well-known white chalkstone cliffs, one of three natural arches and the tall rock pillar known as L’aiguille or the needle.

The rock formations carved by the power of the sea through the ages meant the area was famed for its spectacular natural beauty and as such was very popular with tourists, writers and artists.

As with many of his subjects, Monet painted a series of works depicting the same scene, sometimes from the same viewing point, sometimes from a different angle or perspective. His aim was to capture the essence of the subject in differing atmospheric conditions, times of day and throughout the changing seasons.

He would often work on several canvases at once, changing between paintings according to the conditions at the time, usually painting quickly to capture the scene before the conditions altered. Some works capture the passage of time so well that it is possible to determine the time of day by the quality and position of the sunlight.

The version of The Cliffs at Etretat painted here appears to show the landscape as the sun is beginning to set, the golden light falling on the upper half of the rock tower and just picking out the outer edge of the top of the cliff.

The evening sunlight is also picked out in the sea and his use of quickly applied brushstrokes and swabs of paint creates dynamic movement in the waves. Monet’s use of colour highlights the glittering sparkle of the sun on the water and gives a sense of depth to the undulating sea.

The composition of this piece incorporates the strong vertical lines of the rock formations which emphasises the dramatic strength and solidity of the landscape. These rock formations were huge and overpowering and their presence dominated the coastline. The Cliffs at Etretat is an excellent example of Monet’s exceptional skill in capturing the essence of the landscape in all its natural glory.

my friend and i went to an art gallery and we found this painting so haunting.

ENG: An old attic in the middle of Berlin's Tempelhof district. History was written here during the Second World War. During such a small guided tour through the neighbourhood you will learn a lot. Whether it's a flag gun location or capitulation at the living room table.

The downfall of the "Third Reich" was first sealed in Berlin: The capital capitulated on 2 May 1945, six days before the surrender of all Germany. The document was signed by Germans and Soviets in the house at Schulenburgring No. 2, where Berlin's Governing Mayor Michael Müller later grew up.
