Pilot cutters relied on speed and seaworthiness to secure business and Alpha is a prime example of the type. Long admired by yachtsmen, Alpha was one of many pilot cutters that were converted into yachts and her yachting career started 100 years ago.
As a yacht, Alpha was famously owned by Royal Cruising Club flag officer Sir Sidney Rowlatt, who enjoyed nothing more than sailing her in the gusty conditions she excels in. Alpha underwent various modifications over the years, but thanks to substantial restoration work, she is now again sailing as designed.

The Dassault/Dornier Alpha Jet is a light attack jet and advanced jet trainer co-manufactured by Dassault Aviation of France and Dornier Flugzeugwerke of Germany. It was developed specifically to perform the trainer and light attack missions, as well as to perform these duties more ideally than the first generation of jet trainers that preceded it. Following a competition, a design submitted by a team comprising Breguet Aviation, Dassault Aviation, and Dornier Flugzeugwerke, initially designated as the TA501, was selected and subsequently produced as the Alpha Jet. The first car I ever rented in Europe was an Alpha Romeo. I drove it from Frankfurt to Cologne for the weekend. It was equipped with an early GPS (ca 1998) which was programmed to return to the rentacar shop. So for three days, I had to put up with a German lady telling me to do a u-turn in German at every possible opportunity.
This is a shot I've actually wanted to get the past few trips and for one reason or another it just never worked out. On the trip previous to this one, on the day I planned to get it and unbeknownst to me, the Seas closed early for a private party. This time I just arrived about 10 minutes before park close and the pavilion was already pretty empty. Still with everyone moving around it took til about 10 minutes after the official park close for me to get this shot.
It was a pretty basic setup for this shot. I shot with the tripod fully collapsed to get a really low view looking upwards. I believe this helps add to the grandeur of the space. It was shot with the Nikon 14-24 2.8 (of course) and bracketed 5 shots. I blended 3 of these using luminosity masks to get my base image before post processing. Enjoy.

It's his nickname. He is secretly called that because you never see you eat. But no matter where he shows up, after a few minutes he has a cup of wonderfully scented Earl Gray in his hand. That fact is scary XD

Last night I pointed the DWARF Mini toward Alpha Trianguli (HD 11443) for the first time. It's the brightest star in the small constellation of Triangulum, and until tonight it was really just another name on the list for me. I wanted to spend some time with it and see what I could capture. The conditions in Ottawa were Bortle 7, with 2/5 seeing and 3/7 transparency. The transparency wasn't great, but it was good enough to give it a try.
I used the DWARF Mini with the Astro Filter, shooting 15-second exposures at a gain of 60. I planned for 191 frames and managed to collect 175, giving me 43 minutes and 45 seconds of total integration time. I was pretty happy with that, especially considering the conditions.
Alpha Trianguli is a binary star system and sits at one of the corners of the triangle that gives the constellation its name. It's not the kind of target that produces a spectacular nebula or galaxy image, but that wasn't really what I was after tonight. I was more interested in simply getting acquainted with another star and adding it to my growing list of observations.
