I suppose I don't have much to say today. I begin my new job soon, and I'm nervous. I am probably the most anxious person on the planet, so it is no wonder I'm nervous. And my AF broke...and this makes me sad. It is decidedly easier to auto focus when doing a selfie than to use manual focus, for me at least.
Gannets pair for life and appear to be very affectionate towards their life partner, and chicks. However, when you live in a vast colony of thousands of birds there is bound to be an occassion when one ventures too far into another one's personal space. When that happens they can be really aggresive towards the intruding bird. This tussle went on for about 10 minutes with neither backing down. Those locked bills stayed that way for quite a while. Bempton Cliffs, East Yorkshire.
This is the third consecutive occasion I have been taking photos on this patch on Callum Brae, and each time this young male has accompanied me. He just hops around about 15 metres away, sometimes feeding, but most of the time watching me. He shows neither signs of agression or fear, so I think he is just curious. If he turns up again, I shall have to give him a name.

On the occasion of the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the Great War, Willem Vermandere produced the work Reconciliation. The work is located at the geographical starting point of the Western Front, on the Nieuport-Bad palisade. Inaugurated on October 8, 2014. Reconciliation represents a dialogue of stone between two characters who met at the front and became friends instead of enemies a hundred years later. Between them, there is a no man's land. The hands on the figures are a symbol of aggression, reconciliation, shelter and hospitality. War and peace, past and present, are themes close to the artist's heart. The history of the war in our region still marks him deeply, as this book Reconciliation illustrates.
While trying to get a shot of a Ruddy making bubbles, I noticed two males facing each other. I was not really ready for the action which was over in a flash. I was able to get focus for the first couple of frames but lost it while trying to zoom out, so I was hesitant to post this as it was the sequence of the action that I was trying toshow, but with the missing frames it is not as effective as it could have been.
The Ruddy on the left is the one I consider the challenger as it took a very low stance in the water, but it was the one on the right who made the decisive lunge through the water at the other. The one on the left remained under water briefly, resurfaced and retreated, while the the victor confidently turned away and went back to making bubbles.
I don’t know what happens under the water, but I suppose they collide, at least that is what appears to happen in my blurred frames...for certain lots of water splashes when they meet.
Magnified view is pretty much needed to see any kind of detail in the smaller images.
My proclaimed victor is shown at the bottom, and tomorrow I will post one of the ladies they were trying to impress.

With little room left to expand their empire, the Penguin Monarchy enters the age of seafaring to explore new lands among the sea. "Kevin's Bane" is the first such ship developed. Its manifest can hold a Penguin Speeder, two Penguin exo-suits, four blaster caches, and other assorted cargo. The Penguin Monarchy's flag is proudly displayed on the Starboard side and a banana palm tree is included in every boat to fight of scurvy and flavor fish! One of Vitae's saplings is always on deck, to remind Kevin whose this ship is. And in case Kevin doesn't get the hint, there is rotating quad gun positioned to strike at the slightest sign of agression.

AK 2017: Katmai N.P. and Preserve. We flew to Mirror Lake from Lake Clark then trekked along Funnel Creek where we spent the day watching and photographing the brown bears. This confrontation was interesting (it happened twice while we were there). The light colored bear caught the sockeye salmon. The more aggressive darker bear came over to check it out and managed to steal it away after a scrimmage. The lighter colored bear looked like s/he was well fed, so this behaviour probably didn't happen too often. (Tight crop)

Photographing the wild mustangs in the Eastern Sierra, California, was an amazing experience. I continually felt that I was in their sacred place, and I felt privileged and honored to be there. I would have watched and photographed them all day.... but after a while the herd moved on, and so did I.

human bites leave the scars forever
When I started to work on the serie "dogs also dream", www.flickr.com/photos/kasia_derwinska/albums/721577028623..., the objective was to help to the concrete refuge in adoption of dogs that remained there for the longest period. Luckily since that time all dogs from this shelter were adopted but I decided to continue the project.
The main reason is that I wanted to help on the general sensibilization on the problem of abandonment due to lack of understanding that dog is not thing. None of animal it is, but as since child I love dogs, I decided to focus on them.
There are many causes of abandonment and manners of doing it - leaving on the road and driving away, tying to the tree or physical mistreatment causing the agony of the animal.
Still quite often people treat dogs as the part of possesion. They take or give puppies as gifts and when they grow up, the owners realize that it became too big, too active or do not interact as people wish, forgetting the most important thing...
Althought in less developed and less complexed form than people, dogs experience the wide range of feeling and emotions and have the same brain structures that produce emotions in humans. They have the same hormones and undergo the same chemical changes that humans do during emotional states including the hormone oxytocin, which in humans is involved with love and affection.
Not every dog as well as not every human feel the same way or have the same capacity to understand but all we share five core basic feelings.
One of them is fear - one of the most ancient feeling in all living beings and main reason of agressive behaviors.
Even the most pacific person can act violently in the situation of threat as well as even the most intelligent or reasonable person may need time to heal the wounds of traumatic experiences with other people.
Animals might have the same mechanical systems, but they do not have a divine spark, and they do not have the ability to experience complexed feelings, to analize or to understand the intentions.
The average dog can understand up to 200 words, but no matter how hard you try, dog will never learn to speak, to read or to understand the discurse about who is friend or not.
You need to gain dog´s trust and in order to really communicate, it’s up to you to learn their language, body language and to understand that they also need their space and time to heal the wounds inflicted by people in past or due to lack of the safe contact with human before.
It might seem that I had only good experiences with dogs, but it is not true. I know that dogs can bite. When I was born, my Granparents had the german sheperd. He was taken out from police academy and had a lot of fears that were provoking his agression. When someone was visiting my Granparents, they were obliged to close him in the bathroom, when someone wanted to enter into the bathroom, they were moving him to another room. Rex bited even my Mum once she wanted to take me out of trolley.
Then when I was a child, my uncles´s dog broke the chain and jumped on me. I had bites from my neck to legs but somehow none of these situations created in me the fear in front of the dogs. My family was able to explain and let me understand their conduct and the reason of it. But it requires to feel the empathy, dogs never act with premeditation in contrary to people.
I remember growing up in the midst of previous Russian agressions such as the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Czechoslovakia Invasion. My exposure to news and political conversations were few and far between then, but I remember a clear thought that there must be young girls like me and their families living in Russia who were suffering because of these armed offenses.
As I stand with the people of the Ukraine in their efforts to push back against Russia, I also hope for the people of Russia as they suffer from and stand against this current conflict. It may never happen in my lifetime, but I'm cheering on that Russian girl who finds a way to stand up and prevail against war and find ways to work through differences through diplomacy and conversation.

My first build (save two small vignettes) in nearly 5 months.
The focus of the build is the AT-MP, which I found very easily translatable to bricks, and a fun change since I've hardly ever experimented with building vehicles.
Consequently the environment is a bit of an afterthought. I didn't want to make it too detailed for fear it distracting from the walker.

Photography is my passion, not the favorites or the comments! You who come begging your lot of daily favorites, I ask you to calm down because I feel this as an aggression!
This young fellow took a break from his grazing, just a few seconds after this pic was taken, to bluff charge me, momentarily rearing up, hissing loudly and racing in my direction, precipitating at least a few seconds of sheer terror on my part, during which I beat a hasty retreat to my van .... He apparently stopped about 20 meters from me.
Funny, All the time I've spent around Bears, I've never heard one growl ...In these parts, they just HISS, very loudly ... It's an impressive sound.
First time this season on the receiving of such a display .... It's always these spirited youngsters who do that. I am appreciative and respectful ... I do need to be chastened once in awhile.
Near Cottonwood Creek, on Kluane Lake, Yukon.
( Yeimaya correctly comments below that this look cannot indicate agression ... True, this guy did not seem hostile at all, and I believe that's usually the case ... Bluff-charging by these young Bears seems to be in "play" mode as much as anything else ..He did it merely because he could, and no doubt enjoyed it. Had he been truly upset, and openly displaying agression, then this probably would NOT have been a bluff ... He would have kept coming, and would almost certainly have gotten a bite in ..
As it went, As soon as he had given me a scare, he immediately forgot about us and returned to happily harvesting flowers. )

The giraffes are such elegant animals and often during the courting season they use their necks as signs of affection. This image though is of two males who are showing signs of aggression. If it gets really serious it can even mean death for the loser. Often this occurs when they are rivaling for the attention of the female. It is truly amazing to see and if you look closely you can see how the horn is pushed into the leg of the other . They whack their necks together with great force and this can cause fatal injury. Fortunately we did not witness anything like that

Psychologists have studied and concluded that pink is a calming color, and tends to get rid of resentment, agression and anger! It's regarded as a sign of hope. Violent and aggressive prisoners have successfully calmed down when being placed in a pink room for a limited amount of time. Oddly enough however, longtime exposure in a pink room can result in the opposite effect, but the fact that it triggers calmness initially is intriguing.

Ankaramena (Madagascar) - This photo seems interesting to me because the protagonists are not smiling. Which is rare in this country.
I had wandered away alone from the place where the cattle were sold to get lost in the vegetable market. On my way back to my vehicle, on the only motorable road in the village, I came across these young people with unprepossessing looks. It should be noted that the vazas (white foreigners) never stop in this corner of the bush. As these young people did not seem happy to see me here, I triggered my camera while it was at the height of my chest.
Without aiming, taking the precaution of putting the zoom on the wide-angle position while choosing an aperture small enough to compensate for any possible focus fault. Luckily, the autofocus focused on the shoulder of the central character (in yellow with his hat) and my frame was correct.
To trigger while walking and without aiming, I'm starting to master the technique, even if it's not an exact science. We are in the register of Russian roulette, with less fatal consequences. If I "stole" this photo, it's not because I feared reprisals, but so that they wouldn't ask me for money. This perpetual solicitation was beginning to tire me at this point in my travel.
This photo gives me the opportunity to correct a widely held idea. Madagascar is said to be a very dangerous country. Personally, in five long stays, I have never felt the slightest feeling of insecurity. However, there is no question of falling into angelism. If this country has this reputation, it is because there must be some reality. However, all the stories of assaults that have been reported to me demonstrate how reckless the tourists who were victims were.
In a country known for its poverty, people do not display their money and other wealth in public. We avoid going out alone at night in the many places where there is no public lighting, particularly in the capital where, in fact, you have a one in two chance of meeting bad people. When I go out at night, I never go alone and I always take a taxi, as recommended by the French embassy. Except in Fort-Dauphin, renowned for being the quietest city in the country with a crime rate close to zero. To be honest, you are statistically less likely to be attacked in Madagascar than in Paris.

At Eagle Point Park this morning in Harrison Mills the Bald Eagles were more aggressive than I have ever seen them. Several times I saw Eagles knock each other over and a couple times they latched onto claws and dumped the opponent in the water. Some chases went on longer than I have ever seen them do. The water level is very low and perhaps not enough fish are able to get upriver to feed the Bald Eagles. When looking out over the distant sand bars there were many fewer Bald Eagles than a week ago. Some had moved up to Chehalis Flats and were feeding there. I wish I had done video because there was so much going on and it was hard to keep an eye on it.
