Now that the Tugs have gone, the Bruner Mond diagrams from Tunstead to Tata in Northwich have been taken over by DB’s Class 66’s. 66651 has a brief stint on this circuit a couple of weeks ago, but the standard geared 66044 was working the 6H02 0929 Arpley Sidings to Tunstead Sdgs empty JEA hoppers on Monday 13th May 2024, the driving notching up as he sees the clear aspect of the Plumley Semaphore on the Mid-Cheshire Line.

One of the first New Generation Scania 8x4 concrete mixers. Along with being in the new `Breedon` colours – it is certainly the first one with the German `Schwing Stetter` mixer unit in the UK.

The empty train heads north back to Mountsorrel behind 66046. In the distance it's just possible to see Banbury Junction, the up and down goods loops, and the Lafarge Aggregates sidings.
Some location notes: the gap between the tracks and the trees used to have the connection for the Oxfordshire Ironstone Company (OIC), storage sidings and the GWR-built signal box "Ironstone Sidings". All removed around the time that steam ended. This bridge used to be readily accessible from the neighbouring farm, but has been cut off and is now a long walk across country from the other side. And the trees only allow a few hours of usable light in the morning and later, in the afternoon.
Techy stuff: The train was scheduled to leave at 10.47am but was held five minutes (ignore my exif data, bloomin' camera is always gaining time!) to let a Turbo pass.

ADDITIONAL NOTES.
The big boys of sand and gravel fleet were the PHA high set discharge bogie hoppers used to move sea dredged aggregates from two terminals on the Thames Estuary. Two companies had small fleets of these wagons serving depots and concrete batching plants in London and the South East. The oldest were the 1969 built Murphy Aggregates fleet operating originally out of Angerstein Wharf, Charlton but a close second was the 1970-71 Marinex fleet owned by Brett Marine and used from their loading terminal at Cliffe on the Isle of Grain, by the mid 1980's both terminals were shared.
The first batch of hoppers built in 1969 were lettered "Murphy Aggregates" but the second and third batches they had built in 1983 and 1989 respectfully were lettered 'Marcon Aggregates' as seen in this image. Marcon stood for "Murphy Aggregate Ready-mix Concrete" as most product was destined for concrete batching plants around London. At rail privatisation in 1996 there were 35 Marcon wagons and two years later the 3 batches built covering numbers MAR 17701 to MAR 17735 were sold to EWS. They renumbered the fleet 300701 to 300735 and reclassified them HLA but in reality many ran around with their original private owner numbers for many years as they remained in use with the same customer.

DB Schenker Rail (UK) Ltd's class 66 (JT42CWR) number 66101 in Deutsche Bahn cherry red with DB Schenker branding is photographed working 6Z20 hauling 9 empty bogie box wagons from Wembley European Freight Operations Centre to Lydd Town on 10 February 2015. It was also photographed by Edward Clarkson later on route passing Paddock Wood and by Christopher Livings near Lydd. This service was a trail run on behalf of Brett Aggregates Limited and if successful would mitigate the traffic/transport implications such as lorry movements on unsuitable residential roads, so overcoming some of the local residents objections to the expansion of sand and gravel extraction at Lydd Quarry. Kent County Council suggest that the additional 1.6 million tonnes of land-won aggregate material to be extracted over the next 7 years will be used as construction material in south and east Kent.
Other concerns and objections to the expansion of Lydd Quarry have been raised by Kent Wildlife Trust, Natural England, the Environment Agency, RSPB, Southern Water, members of Lydd Town Council, Shepway District Council and local residents. Despite these expansion of Lydd Quarry remains one of Kent County Councils preferred options for mineral extraction within the county.
According to Matthew Brown numbers of the bogie box wagons were KEA VTG 3207, KEA VTG 3237, KEA VTG 3236, KEA VTG 3166, KEA VTG 3195, KEA VTG 3214, KEA VTG 3194, KEA VTG 3216 and KEA VTG 3199.
66101 (works number 968702-101) was built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division, London, Ontario, Canada in 1998 and unloaded from the Heavy Lift Ship MV "Stellanova" at Newport Docks on 24 April 1999.

Summer means limestone and aggregate traffic increase on the Lake State Railway. LSRC has done a good job growing their on-line traffic, leading to a need for more rail cars. On this cool September morning, there was a big cut of these rock hoppers on the Y126 turn bringing these cars south from Bay City to Saginaw.
LSRC 8005 is an open-top aggregate hopper that used to run in rock service in Texas for the Western Rail Road Co (a shortline connecting to the UP in Dittlinger, TX).
