Early in the morning at Mattamuskeet, there were ducks, geese, and swans aplenty, casually dipping, paddling, preening...doing what ducks do.
As the only photographer on the Preserve that cool morning, it was like shooting ducks in a barrel.
Little did I realize that, just out of view, something sinister was amiss.
Within the reeds, a large predator suddenly made repeated, vociferous dives into the flocks...spooking them into flight.
The dense growth of vegetation obscured all but a brief glance of tawny brown.
...A Red Wolf, perhaps?!!
We can never know for sure, since long after the birds had all been flushed (or its appetite sated) there was no sign of anything to be seen or heard.
