She started mewing the moment she saw me. I stopped and gave her a good scratch under the chin and patted he and she smooched the fence. Don't be fooled by her expression, she is very affectionate. She wanted to get closer to me and climbed down from her perch on the fence. Once she was on the pavement it was very hard to get a shot because she kept coming in towards me and smooching my legs.

No. 40. The shaft in which this accident happened is an upcast, and ordinarily for other purposes out of use. The fittings are kept in order, and engine, ropes, cages, it had also been run up and down more than once previously to get the engine (a condenser) into proper order. On the two men descending on the top of the cage and being stopped opposite their work, the rope suddenly snapped, causing the cage and one of the men to fall to the bottom; the other man fell across a bunton at some distance from the bottom. At the fracture the rope was found to be very much corroded and totally unfit to be used for any purpose whatever where life was depending upon it. Whether this condition could be discovered by such an examination as was made it is difficult to say, but I am of opinion the engineer was somewhat to blame for not examining the fittings himself. The rope had done very little work, but had been on this engine for two years, frequently hanging in the shaft where smoke and steam were ascending, and consequently in greater need of very careful examination.
I was afterwards informed that liberal compensation was paid to the relatives of both deceased men, but I was not informed to what amount.

The inspiration for Thorncrown Chapel was Sainte Chappelle, Paris’ light filled gothic chapel. Fay affectionately labeled Thorncrown’s style as “Ozark Gothic.” The chapel rises 48 feet into the sky with over 6,000 square feet of glass and 425 windows. Its dimensions are 24 feet by 60 feet. The chapel is made with all organic materials to fit its natural setting. The only steel in the structure forms a diamond shaped pattern in its wooden trusses. The building has a native flagstone floor surrounded with a rock wall which gives the feeling that the chapel is part of its Ozark hillside.
In order to preserve Thorncrown’s natural setting, Fay decided that no structural element could be larger than what two men could carry through the woods. The building materials are primarily pressure treated pine 2x4s, 2x6s, and 2x12s. The larger elements of the building such as the trusses were assembled on the floor and raised into place.
