Add a spacer on one side of the hub...add a presta nut on the other...reinstall QR skewer without the springs, and clamp it down tight. Then adjust the bearing preload on the Presta-nut side.
I can't believe I've been wrenching on bikes for 25 years and never heard of this trick before -- works great!

The Carnival Cruises' Halloween "mascot" that shows up during cruises taken in October. This was a 9-foot tall statue. I saw a couple of them scattered throughout the ship.

Glacial/post-glacial deposits at Reiss Beach with a peat layer on top, recently uncovered by storm waves. The peat layer sits between the base of the sand dunes and above the glacial/post-glacial grey silt-like deposits recently uncovered by storm waves. From the thickness of the peat, using the general rule that 1 mm of peat is deposited per year there is approximately 200 years growth, before it was covered by the dunes. The weight of the dunes may have compressed the peat layer, making it greater than 200 years growth. Peat is formed when the rate of growth exceeds the rate of decomposition of plant matter. The layers below the peat were under the surface of the sea until the uplift of land began after the last Ice Age finished( approximately 18,000 years ago) called isostatic adjustment, as the land was relieved of the weight of the massive ice sheets. This uplift is also evident by raised beaches around the coast of Caithness, well above the current sea level.
I brought the Holgaroid back out and on the day I drove around the Salton Sea realized that I'd left the lens attachment back at the hotel somewhere. Then I discovered why you need to use the lens attachment with the back, which I could have figured out if I'd thought about it at all, when I took this. Still, I kind of like the ghostliness of it.

I think the 2 slots either side of the crutch are for the pendulum suspension spring. The crutch does not appear to have ever been fitted with a pin to engage with the pendulum.
It's been awhile since I posted anything on machines. So I thought I would post two pictures I have never posted anywhere.
They were taken at the Gravenstein Fair at Ragle Ranch Park, Sebastopol, California.
I was intrigued by the motor a farmer was idle adjusting at the fair. Early American antique motors interest me. The motor is what made us a very mobile society and powerful nation. But this isn't a history lesson. I just wanted to share a few pictures of antique motors I took.

Photo adjusted with PSE "Auto Levels", which removed the pinks and the warmth of the sunset. It's still a nice image, though, so I am including it.
I made a pigeon chest adjustment. The FBA creates too much move across the bust area. This adjustment works best.
Pigeon chest adjustment for my DD. The Vogue Sewing Book illustration makes the horizontal slash at the armhole instead of a few inches below it. My adjustment also gives DD a little more across the bust area. Notice my change increases the length of the side seam in this area. The difference is eased in above the notch.
