I spent the morning making a miniature embroidery of the BBC test card girl. I'm having a great time experimenting in the craft room since I decided to take a (probably permanent) break from making EastEnders stuff. I think the creative juices are starting to flow again, people...

My recent go at testing our medical emergency services has resulted in the need for some lifestyle adjustments - but at least I'm here, and many have not been that fortunate .. one of those moments that cause you to reflect on many matters ..

W. Butcher & Sons Carbine nº 3a Quarter Plate folding camera with Aldis Uno Anastigmat f/7.7 (to f/45) set in a Lukos II shutter (25, 50, 100, B, T).

The camera has a dual back that accepts either 122 format film or a plate back. Both camera body and back have matching serial numbers (B42082). A wooden take-up 122 film spool (Kodak) is included.

The unit seems to date to roughly around World War I. A unit shown in a 1914 catalogue, which list this shutter and lens combination for the quarter plate format has minor differences, in particular the finger holds for pulling out the front standard.

A neat touch is a small padded section on the front door that protects the lens when the camera is closed

The camera carries the model name (Carbine Nº 3a) embossed into the leather handle, but is badged with a metal tag reading "Carbine J.W.Small Australia" on one side and on the other carries the metal tag "T.A. Dickson Photographic Stores Geelong".

J.W. Small was a 'camera supply store' in business from about 1871 to the 1920s, with successors operating until after World War II. At the time this camera was distributed, J.W. Small had stores in Sydney and Melbourne.

T.A. Dickson was a chemist in Geelong who sold photographic supplies in quantities, but it would appear as a side-line to his pharmaceutical interests.

For reference, in case you've found this independently from my blog post on the subject, the steps I took are...

1. Expose the lens adjustment part. The ring at the front which says "Olympus D. Zuiko..." has three tiny screws around the outside. Undo these, but not all the way out or they'll be hard to put back in. You can just loosen them and then pull the ring out.

2. Find an area dim enough that the aperture opens wide when you check the light - this will make it easier to find the right focus. Or just set it to f2.8, if you're sure it won't completely overexpose.

3. Set up the tripod 1m away from the newspaper using the tape measure. Set the camera to the first zone (which should be 1m).

4. Load the camera with the film, and take a few shots to advance it to frame 1. Put the camera on the tripod. Turn the lens that you see underneath the ring fully clockwise, then, under the top cell on the light meter, make a pencil mark on the rim that you just turned, as a marker.

5. Take a picture. Turn the lens one cell anticlockwise, so that your pencil mark is below the next cell around. Take another picture. Repeat this as long as desired - I found my ideal spot after 12 turns, but 36 frames will take you all the way around. 24 should easily be fine. (You might be able to just ignore all of this and use my figure of 12, actually, given that this was a mass-produced camera, but I can't guarantee that.)

6. Rewind the film and get it developed.

7. Look at the frames you shot and see which one is the sharpest. For me, frames 11-13 were the best, so I settled on 12.

8. Turn the lens around so that the pencil mark is this many cells anticlockwise from the top, and put the ring back on. Note that there is a sticky-down bit on the ring which needs to be put into a notch, at about 1 o'clock around - you can see the notch if you look closely. Tighten the screws back up on the ring.

Gotta get the princess look just right.

Public insurance adjusters are insurance claim negotiators who can negotiate maximum possible claim amount honestly with the insurance companies. They are the first person to offer help whenever a loss occurs to any residential, businesses or commercial properties. Their work is fully based on policyholders in mind and not the insurance companies. For more details about insurance adjusters, visit apublicadjuster.com/

The lower inner triangle column has been shortened to give the shortest column length required: it is held in place by one or both of the outer triangle sections and the nylon sliding bush (the white section ).

The outer will be welded whilst held in a lathe to ensure its rotation is centred and true. Once welded this end is complete.

Note the Corsa EPAS column has not been modified, so a direct replacement can always be fitted in the future.

Tonal scale is important in BW photography. It is difficult to get this across to computer monitors. But at the very least your monitor settings should allow for properly differentiating the extreme values, particularly the shadows.

The leftmost stripe should be a clear white. The two rightmost stripes should be distinguishable. The last stripe represents pitch black, as does the frame.
