The island is the caldera of an active volcano

(DSC_0011fin1)

The spectacular volcanic complex of Tengger in East Java contains five volcanoes within the ancient caldera of Tengger. In the rear is Semeru Volcano, which at 3,676m is the highest mountain on the island of Java.

Other volcanoes in shot: "Mount Batok", lower centre; "Mount Bromo", left.

This photo is taken just seconds after sunrise from the viewing point near Mount Bromo (East Java, Indonesia).

Mount Bromo (Indonesian: Gunung Bromo), is an active volcano and part of the Tengger massif. At 2,329 metres (7,641 ft) it is not the highest peak of the massif, but is the most well known. The volcano belongs to the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park.

Just when I thought I had enough shots of Mt. Mayon... I saw this. Took a similar shot at twilight and a morning shot -- just a few moments ago, but without that belltower in a wide angled shot. So, here it is. I believe, this is what most postcard shots look like, the colors, the time of day.

Cagsawa ruins, taken shortly after sunrise. I'm thinking this is the best shot so far of the volcano and the ruins. But as for the volcano, I always save the best for last. I think this is one of the better shots I have, but certainly the most spectacular is yet to come.

Again, just for reference, that summit has an altitude of about two and a half kilometers. And the summit is about 9 kilometers from where I'm standing. If you think it is a small volcano(due to the framing with that old belltower), think again.

Mt ASO sits in the center of Japan's southern island of Kyushu. Aso's old crater rim stretches 128 km in circumference and is claimed by the Japanese to be the largest active volcano on earth. It's a natural paradise. Enjoy my Slideshow on Japan

Striking bold orange rock of one of Japan's many active volcanoes, as it steams from its snowy, barren side, against a blue sky.

After the sunset and the rain, the clouds parted a little bit allowing some stars to shine through but still reflecting the light from the volcano on the clouds and smoke. This is the same glow that Captain Cook saw and attracted him to the island in 1774.

Here is another old shot from our Oregon road trip. This one is a Panorama shot of the mighty Mt Shasta with a road lading up to the mountain while it is illuminated by the last rays of the sun. I love the this road where we took this shot as every turn and curve has awesome views of the mountain. I had almost forgot about this shot until couple of days ago when I was backing up my data files and saw this one.

This one is a pano stitch image of about 15 shots and was taken just seconds before the last light of the day was gone. I had seen a barn on this road the last time we were there and was driving around to find it but couldn't and my wife was yelling at me not to waste the sunset. so finally I gave in and pulled to the side to take this shot.

Hope you all like it, and Happy new Year!!

Masaya is a large basaltic volcanic caldera located 20 km south of Managua, Nicaragua.

Masaya continually emits large amounts of sulfur dioxide gas from the active Santiago crater.

a guide took us for a 1 1/2 hour hike across a lava flow to a cliff edge to watch an awe inspiring lava flow....with binoculars we watched the molten rock for about 40 minutes....then it was another 1 1/2 hour walk back--in the dark this time! I went as fast as I could possibly go...our guide was not slow! other people took twice as long! I was so glad I didn't trip and fall!!! It was quite the family adventure! The lava isn't always flowing so we felt lucky.....

more lava photos behind this one.... :0)

Mt. Naka (aka Naka-Dake) is one of the five peaks of the central cone group of Mt. Aso, an active volcano that continuously emits smoke and occasionally erupts, last time in October 2016, just two months before my visit. Although on a good day the spectacular crater is accessible to tourists by a toll road or the ropeway, due to the eruption there was unfortunately a no-entry zone of five kilometers from the crater. The road was open only as far as the Aso Volcano Museum.

Two images, both of the same stars taken at Hawaii Volcano National Park on the Big Island of Hawaii next to the Volcano (the reddish color). The left image is a 30 second exposure and the right image is the same shot, except one full hour of 30 second exposures combined to produce these star trails. About 4500 ft elevation if I recall. Kept warm with coats, hats, blankets and hot chocolate. Wonderful evening looking at the clear sky and watching the fiery show of the active volcano. Aloha

Mount Agung or Gunung Agung is a volcano in Bali, Indonesia, southeast of Mt Batur volcano, also in Bali. Gunung Agung stratovolcano is the highest point of Bali. It dominates the surrounding area, influencing the climate, especially rainfall patterns. The clouds come from the west and Agung takes their water so that the west is lush and green and the east dry and barren. From a distance, the mountain appears to be perfectly conical. From the peak of the mountain, it is possible to see the peak of Mt Rinjani on the nearby island of Lombok, to the east, although both mountains are frequently covered in clouds.

Gunung Agung is an active volcano, with a large and deep crater that occasionally emits smoke and ash. (Wiki)

Mutnovsky (Russian: Мутновский) is a complex volcano located in the southern part of Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia. It is one of the most active volcanoes of southern Kamchatka; the latest eruption was recorded in 2000.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Hawaii (the big island), Hawaii

I spent an evening alone in the shadow of this beautiful giant. My dad had passed away about 10 days earlier, and I was feeling vulnerably sad and alone. At his funeral my brother played a Vince Gill song called "Go Rest High"~ I took that message to heart and found some peace in my smallness next to this mountain.

Due to the current event which Lokon Volcano being actively spew ashes and lava Volcano Discovery , the above picture taken from other highest point looking to Mt. Lokon and Tondano city.

And this is the streaming from last month eruption Lokon Eruption

Thanks for the views, comments, faves...cheers ^__^

View on black please!

This is definitely one of the most alien landscapes I've ever visited; A giant crater containing a desert tundra and four volcanoes.

To get to the viewpoint for sunrise, you need to get up at around 03:00. We decided to get up a bit earlier to see what the sky was like.

Sadly, due to it being rainy season, it was very cloudy. Every now and again, we (myself and Fran) got a break in the clouds and it was nice to see the stars peeking through.

Although there was no Milky Way, I quite enjoy the layers created in this photo.

The Java Jaunt, part #2: Kawah Ijen.

Bali is the ideal island for stress relief. Seriously. Its beautiful beaches, jaw dropping reefs, spectacular surf breaks, Lychee Martinis, temples & shrines, banana pancakes, black rice pudding, … So much beauty, in stark contrast with freezing & cold Kazachstan. Vishnu had joined our path, no doubt about it.

After one week it was time to hit the road. Heading West, to Java. The bumpy ride that’s called Adventure immediately started at the port. There are less tourists in Java, so drivers and scammers eagerly jump on any occasion they can take. Taxi, sir? How can we get your money, sir? It’s advisable to have a strict plan if you’re travelling Java. Any confusion/doubt will lead into an opportunity to take you elsewhere. Bargaining is a much intense process than in Bali, and most of the drivers have little knowledge of English. Anyway. Back to the plan.

I had seen pictures of an amazing active volcano in East Java. Research informed me the volcano was kinda hard to reach, and you need to be in good shape to go all the way. The death of a French photographer who slipped during the hike a couple of years ago made it even more harder. Nevertheless, I was determined to see it.

A young boy in his early twenties agreed on taking us to the mount Ijen in his 4x4. What followed was a 3 hour back-breaking ride into the mountains. Halfway the ride we got stuck in a landslide. Locals pulled us out. When we reached the last control post we eagerly stashed some Coca Cola, banana’s and food, and started the steep 2 hour hike to the crater rim. On foot, because there’s no other way to reach the summit.

Meet the Kawah Ijen. An active stratovolcano of the Ijen Plateau. The crater houses the world’s most largest acidic lake, with a shocking pH acidity of 0,5 at its center point. Fall in and you dissolve. Instantly. Active vents at the edge of the lake contain elemental sulfur. The escaping volcanic gasses are channeled through a network of ceramic pipes, resulting in condensation of molten sulfur. It’s this sulfur that gets broken into large pieces and carried out in baskets by miners. Some of these miners carry loads up to 100 kilograms on their back, working amidst the pungent and irritating sulfur smell. Unreal scenery.

Next up: The Java Jaunt, part #3: Gunung Bromo. Being at the wrong place at the wrong time.

Amed, Bali. Late in the day Balinese families come to the beach and the children get to go fishing and swimming for fun. Gunung Agung is an active volcano that last erupted in 1963.
